  1. Ah, “Midnight Special”….. I also remember that from my early 20s. I was living in Calgary when I first saw it but it came on rather late for me. We got our American cable TV signals from Spokane and there was a 1-hour difference between time zones.
Because of CRTC regulations at the time, the signal could only be received on the Canadian side of the border, as it was illegal to downlink satellite TV signals back then. The result was that we often had terrible reception because of weather conditions.
(Your mention of Minot reminds me of when I lived in Saskatchewan a few years later. The stations for the American cable TV channels were in several locations in North Dakota. We had the same situation with the signals as we did when I lived in Alberta.)
The song also brings back memories for me. I was in either my freshman or sophomore undergrad year when I heard it for the first time. It was either on the radio (630 CHED in Edmonton) or someone in the student residence had it on their stereo’s turntable.
BTW, the URL took me to a piece by REM.

  2. I am certain that I saw this Midnight Special on LIVE TV after playing a Friday night HS football game (my Junior year), and a date with my girlfriend. I was hooked forever. SD is my FAVORITE band of all time. The perfect rock band for iconoclasts like me. And … my brain just resonates with Jazz notes and tempo. I am also a uuuugee HARD BOP Jazz fan. Yeah, I know they are pretty hard to look at. David Palmer must be featured in “The Big Book of British Smiles” (thank you Simpsons), same for my music hero Donald Fagen. In fact, it was because SD received so much negative press and negative reviews from music critics that they stopped touring or doing any live performances until 1996. They were mercilessly attacked for being rather, uh, un-telegenic for a Rock band. But their Jazz-Rock Fusion is THE BEST EVER, wholly unique in the Rock landscape. David Palmer didn’t last long, as his vocal style just didn’t “fit” … although I still LOVE his sweet-sounding voice on Dirty Work But SD’s musical style is much more suited for Fagen’s, snarling, sarcastic, New York, tone. Nor did Denny Dias (lead guitar) last long with the band. SD sampled many different guitarists over the years, including Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter who played in the early version of SD. Interesting side note; Skunk Baxter is a Pentagon Intelligence analyst who designs defense systems for asymmetrical warfare. A really SMART dude, who plays War Games with the Pentagon. He would SHOCK you with his knowledge of our missile defense systems (yep, a top security clearance). YouTube is full of lead guitar tutorials of SD lead guitar solos, which in my opinion are just pure genius. If you are really talented … you might be able to keep up with Rock Bands version of Bodhisattva … unbelievably complex, intricate guitar work. Pure genius.
I would also say that in retrospect, this is NOT my favorite version of Do it Again … far to Latined-up with the percussion … and without the Sitar pedal giving the guitar solo its unforgettable signature 🙁 But it is cool seeing Denny Dias rip through the solo with his eyes closed. I have seen SD LIVE multiple times … and possibly again this summer at the Hollywood Bowl ? The BEST two SD concerts were at Shoreline Amphitheatre with a friend who got FRONT Center (12 rows up – eye level with the band) tickets from an employee at Bill Graham Presents (as a gift because he did a wedding for him). That was SD’s FIRST Tour since the 1970’s and was FANTASTIC. The other was my 25th wedding anniv. in Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre (5th row, center). A really kewl pic of Fagen from that concert has been my screen-saver for a long time …

  4. I have stopped reading several US Conservative web sites due to their anti-Trump hysteria, and Glenn Beck has completely lost it!
Yes, Trump is not a pure conservative, but the GOP has talked Conservative, and run successfully on it, for a decade … and done NOTHING

  5. I have stopped reading several US Conservative sites because of their anti-Trump hysteria. And Glenn Beck has totally lost it!
Yes, Trump isn’t true conservative, but the GOP has talked and successfully run on Conservatism and done … NOTHING! Now, a guy comes along with mass appeal and bring millions into the fold and the GOP have convulsions.

  6. Our “conservative” Congressmen caved-in and passed Obama’s budget at the end of Oct. 2015. … Since then, the National Debt has increased by $ 1 Trillion dollars. Yeah … and they tell me that Trump isn’t “conservative” … well based on the GOPe track record … GOOD ! Because they have NO CLUE what conservative is.

  7. The little boy PM’s advisors said that people LOVE a leader like Putin who lifts heavy things, and rides horses without a shirt. That’s all … he is just copying Putin. What ? You aren’t impressed.

  8. A few days ago I walked through the local community college (SAIT in Calgary), a short cut to go pick up my car, and passed an instructor speaking to his class outside, I guess he took his class outside to enjoy the nice weather. He seemed to be lecturing about the buildings, as I passed by he preached, “this is First Nations land, this is ALL First Nations land.” As I continued on my way I was thinking, “no it isn’t, this “First Nations” entity has no title to the land and no rational or reasonable claim to the title, what’s going on here, those students shouldn’t be receiving that kind of information…”
    We are screwed…

  9. I’ll be impressed when he levitates, then I’ll believe he has some special powers like the person with whom he shares a birthday. He has proven already he is more than a one trick pony, his repertoire is well covered by his adoring media here and around the globe. A boxing bout with Putin would be pure gold.

  11. Bingo, both times. I don’t really like him either, but Conservatives run as conservatives and then govern like Liberals in the US and in Canada. Boehner has more Democrat friends than Republican friends…he told us so.

  12. One of my favourites from Midnight Special is Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good”. Fantastic musicians.

“Stalin’s Last Crime — The Plot Against the Jewish Doctors, 1948-1953 by Jonathan Brent and Vladimir P. Naumov is an in-depth study in psychological survival in a nightmarish police state — Stalin’s Russia, circa 1948-1953. The untangling of this Gordian knot of conspiracies and plots is the convincing achievement of the authors of this suspenseful historical drama.

  14. I don’t think he needs any more boxing events. It was that boxing mis-match with the senator that made selfie boy.
What more does he require world media-wise; election to ‘Pope of the World’s Progressives’?

  15. Here is one of the great Midnight Special shows in its entirety. Imagine singers like Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt with Little Feat as the backing band. Doesn’t get any better than this.

Hosted by Little Feat and Emmylou Harris
With guests Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Winchester, Weather Report, and Neil Young (thankfully only one song).

  16. All the LIEberals have to go with, for PM Poof, is to play the Cult of Personality card, to the extreme. So far, its working for the Low Info voters, but, typically, CoP leaders crash and burn badly. We’ve seen that in BC over the years with Willy Wooden Shoes and Glennocchio. It always ends badly.
I refuse to play their game, observe, partake, or recognize the stupidity and false pretenses of the Ponce. I’ve seen this movie before, as most of you have as well.
On that note, In Living Colour!

my most vivid memory of the midnight special… (remember how they fritzed the picture… zooming in & out, going negative screen)… was being so high i had to go take a time out in the bathroom (blotter, smoke AND alcohol… hey it was the seventies) to cool off my fevered brain.
i’m still amazed at the way we just popped whatever pill/ smoked whatever sh@t someone was flogging.

  18. During the same time that “Midnight Special” was on the air, PBS had two live music shows as well: “Austin City Limits” and “Soundstage”.
ACL is still running, but it’s long abandoned its original country and folk music theme. SS went off the air some time during the 1980s, was revived in some form about 15 or 20 years later, but I don’t think it’s on any more.
I remember watching Ralph Stanley perform his brand of bluegrass on ACL. (Terrific!) SS had quite a variety as well, including the BeeGees and Jackson Browne before he went all lefty-progressive.
The nice thing about those shows was that the music was live–no lip-synching or fancy technical enhancements.

  21. I had NO idea!Yeah,it WAS the 70’s.
My best memory of MS, was early 70’s just got home from pubbing in Vancouver, turned on the TV and there was MS featuring the return of one of my favorite artists, Johnny Winter doing his first concert since rehab.
Don’t know if it was the weed, but that version of the slide classic “Rock N Roll” was the best I’ve ever heard.

  22. Message to Trudeau and other misguided do-gooders:
“According to the Archbishop of Aleppo, when Westerners open their doors to Syrian refugees, it hurts, rather than helps, their cause. The solution lies not in welcoming more refugees, but in helping resolve the situation back home so they will not need to leave.
Archbishop Jean-Clement Jeanbart said he is ‘not happy’ with the news that Canada has welcomed about 25,000 Syrian refugees in the past few months, despite its good intentions.
‘We’re not happy when we see the Canadian government moving refugees and facilitating their integration. It hurts us. A lot,’ he said.”

  23. But the Liberals intentions were not good. The intention was to simply get more votes by appearing to be more generous than Conservatives. The process was totally self serving and manipulative. Liberals never change their stripes.

  24. Regardless of what they might con the media into labeling them, the aboriginals are nothing more than the first immigrants to the unpopulated land that eventually became Canada.
The real First Nations were building megalithic civilizations in places like the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Indus valley, and Japan during the last ice age when sea level was 250ft lower than now. At that time the aboriginals in North America were roving bands of nomadic hunter gatherers who never developed into nations with technological attributes like writing, smelting, alloying, masonry, architecture, engineering, or the wheel.
To call themselves “First Nations” is an incredulous display of hubris. I refuse to acknowledge this con and will only refer to them as aboriginals or first immigrants.
The con is a lot like the GQBLT poofters trying to label anyone who finds their sexual proclivities disgusting as ‘homophobic’. There’s no fear or phobia involved. I consider stepping in dogshĂŽt as disgusting and something to avoid, but that doesn’t make me scataphobic.
    Refuse to parrot-back their propaganda.

  26. Ouch ! Right ON Jean ! I suspect there are a vast MAJORITY of people who believe EXACTLY what you expressed (as I do) … but simply remain silent. The infamous SILENT MAJORITY. Although it appears their silence is finding a voice in Donald Trump.
