Math is hard.(Actually, the linked headline drives me just as nuts because it confuses “average” with “median”.)

So this is the end of public schools. I like it. First, she’ll get rid of the bottom half. Then when a new average is established, we lose another half – leaving only one quarter of where we started. Then half of that, half of that, etc.
What is better than average? More Democrat voters? More union members? More alarm clocks at the science fair? More students/staff with conflicting gender/sex? More boys on Ritalin?
Exactly what I thought, someone has been singing kumbaya when they were teaching Introduction to Statistics for Idiots.
George Carlin said, “Think about how stupid the average person is. And then realize that half the population is dumber than that.”
And those are the ones, boys and girls, who spend a lifetime running for office …..
Somebody please tell Hillary that Lake Wobegon where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average, is a fictional town.
I seem to recall that during Bill’s first term, when she was the health care genius, she was making her tour of talk shows and on the Dr. Dean Edell show, she noted that a huge proportion of health care costs were incurred in the last six months of life. She claimed that under her new plan, because of the availability of preventive health care, those costs could be avoided…
Reminds me of the old comment “…do you realize that 50% of doctors who graduate are below average?”. Ms Clinton’s remarks are totally meaningless: you can have 50% “below average” in a high-performing school district and still have the lowest-ranking school turning out well-educated graduates. Conversely, the “top-performing” schools in a really bad school district will be turning out a lot of marginally-literate to illiterate graduates, but they’re producing fewer of these than the lower-performing schools. Still really dismal, particularly for the students.
I speak as the product of a school district which was – in its time – fiercely determined to ensure all its graduates – university program or general program (essentially headed towards secretarial work or apprenticeships – this was back in the day) the tools needed to become productive adults. And I remain grateful for this focus. My spouse was not so fortunate and ended up being allowed to take the “easy” route, which meant for a harder path down the line.
And so the president is now in charge of public schooling?
How the heck would you ever identify a school where the children are underperforming? Talk of testing or evaluating student performance sends teachers unions(oops not unions but federations or associations) into fits of offended outrage.
And you nailed Hillery perfectly with that. What is even more revealing is the intelligence of those who would vote for someone as stupid as her.
John M gives us evidence of the magnitude of her stupidity.
Sadly we have the same level of stupidity in our PMO at the moment.
OK, people.
There are 10 schools in your district, rated on a scale of 1-10: one school is rated a 3, six schools are rated 7, two schools an 8, and one school a 9.
What is the average rating of the ten schools?
And how many are rated below average?
70 / 10 =7.
The average and median in this case are both 7, and only 1 school is below average or median
Average AND median are 7 in is example.
Average is 7 and one school is closed. However, this is, presumably an iterative process. That’s when it begins to collapse. We need to know the periodicity and therefore half-life of the system.
Oops, missed last part of the question:
Only one school below average (3).
However, it is not a federal responsibility.
Trump should shut down the federal education department.
Can he do this?
Out of schools but one in 14 years
In large samples such as this 98000 schools in the USA,the mean and the medium are essentially the same, probably even the mode is less than one SD away. These bell curve almost exactly

Isn’t Mrs. Clinton just so eloquent! By the way, I have read Article II of the Constitution and cannot find where the president has the power to shut down a local school. Maybe someone can help me.
Let me try to predict Trump’s response:
“remember when the Barbie doll said “Math is hard?”. Hillary too.”

I was surprised to learn there are folks taking a stab at ranking schools in Sask, traditionally the home of ideology-fueled public sector unions.
