I like your school. What kind of rifle did you make?
0.45 cal black powder rifle, a Big Bear Blvd stopper.
Machined the lock, stock, trigger mechanism, to very tight tolerances.
We used either cast lead ball or slugs depending on what you’re taking down…with fffG black powder as the accelerant to provide the exothermic motive gases.
You could actually take down a 6-8 inch diameter cedar with ease, as the soft lead
spread quite a bit on the way through.
I think there were about a dozen ‘musketeers’ in my class.
At the range we were able to hit the odd golf ball at 100 yds, once we were sighted in. We had great fun filling up old oil tins and watched with some glee at the hydrodynamic splash ripping up the tins as the bullet passed through.

Your shop teacher knew how to get boys interested in learning the intricacies of machining, didn’t he? God bless him.
Boys typically are not as interested in school as girls are, because the course material they learn from at best ignores their interests ( in truth, it frequently disparages their interests ). For instance, ” creative writing ” bores most boys, while girls like it.
Re- write the textbooks to address their interests, and – who knows? – they might find learning fascinating, and easier.
For instance, boys love (and live) fishing. So teach linear equations in two variables by studying the relationship between the length of a lake trout, and it’s weight, accompanied by pictures, and comparing the real life relationship ( non-linear ) to what a hypothetical laker exhibiting linear growth would look like.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for any bureaucrat in charge of book adoption caring about, or even recognizing this, anytime soon.

I really don’t care how many deranged psychopaths modern progressives breed, I just retain the natural civil right to shoot them in the center mass if they attempt to murder me in the absence of any meaningful police security. I really don’t care if you failed as a parent, if your “failure” attacks society they must be put down like a rabid dog – either by an armed victim or a jury carrying out a death sentence.
ALL the victims of criminal shooters in “gun free zones” are people who died an were sacrificed to the fraudulent prog idea that stripping you of your right to effective self defence makes you safer – someone forgot to tell the psychopaths – and as Bill says, there are more psychos being manufactured every day by proggy parents.
Remove the right to effective self defense from citizens and you create a population of helpless sheep who the shepherds and sheep dogs allow to be eaten by wolves at will because they are morally detached from the flock. The Judge asks the tradesman if he has anything to say to the court before his sentencing.

H.R. – Wonderful tale, but did you build the barrel? Most of my research shows that building and rifling of the barrel is probably past the capabilities of most high school shop labs. I am currently working on a linear accelerator with lithium polymer batteries and a magazine accepting standard finishing nails through an easily replaceable barrel based on half-inch copper pipe. Accuracy does not matter so much when you can deliver twenty nails per second.
