  2. “Misleading analyses” my foot. Out here in Alberta, I’ve clients who are struggling to find work. The oil patch is really shucking off anything non-essential. We hear the first layoffs at Fort Mac were of the “commuters”, those men who flew in and out from Atlantic Canada on a regular schedule (and, by the way, apparently paid provincial tax to the province where the family lived, not Alberta; that may be a bit of a benefit for Alberta, given the province had to fund all the structural costs for these men), but there will be further layoffs. Others are cutting back on their “non-essential” expenditures, which is rough for the employees of the businesses they previously patronized. My clients are very much into “survival” mode; I really hope (and I’m not just being selfish) they make it.

  6. So if there is any BANKERS or Traders or FOREX guru’s. I have a question.
    Why is our exchange rate at $1.00USD = $1.37CAD But the RBC Bank and others will steal 0.08 cents from me on my exchange giving me only $1.29 ? I understand they skim abit for taking risk but this is theft. 3-4 cents i get that but 0.08 thats insane. and isnot right.
    If anyone can shed some light why the bank takes such a big chunk, i understand again afew cents but 0.08 is outrageous

  11. Frances – too many of my neighbours here in Calgary voted for Change. They don’t realize that when you’re healthy, getting cancer is Change.
    The combination of the cyclic market turning down, plus a government that doesn’t even try to get how an economy works, means that Alberta is not a good place to invest at the moment. Places that are not good to invest lose jobs. Expect companies that are lean and mean to become skinny and pissed, or to perish.

  15. This has been a pet peeve of mine for years.
    I assume the answer to the question why is there such a huge spread between buying and selling foreign currency by the big banks is – because few people seek out alternatives. And there are lots of alternatives. Here in BC, I use the Vancouver Bullion and Currency Exchange. Their buy/sell spread is much smaller (depending on the amount of the transaction) and you can do it all online through your existing bank accounts.
    Never a problem with them after many transactions.
    Canadian consumers also get nailed by credit card companies when it comes to foreign transactions. Until recently, they all charged a 2.5% foreign transaction fee. Recently however, Chase Bank Canada introduced the Amazon.ca Visa card without the 2.5% fee, along with 1% cashback and no yearly fee.

  17. Paul – they get away with the ‘bank’ robbery because very very few people do the calculation that you did. The cost is embedded.
    Maddening when you think that in the Internet era today crypto currencies can transfer money anywhere in the world virtually instantaneously for a fraction of one cent. Wonder why there is a concerted effort by The Ruling Class to thwart them?
