  9. I’m a Canadian who’s lived in Atlanta the last 16 years. Not that that matters but I have no opinion about the Stone Mountain relief but it raises some interesting questions about censorship. As a piece of art or a time capsule it’s quite effective and awe-inspiring despite some of the despicable aspects that it embodies; in the same way almost every great ancient monument (and many not-ancient ones) glorifies an exploitative power. If we destroy the Stone Mountain relief is it right to say that all works of art (propagandistic though they may be, although one could say that all art is propaganda to some degree) which glorify anything from an oppressive culture should be destroyed? Ancient Egypt was a slave-owning society with the Pharaoh at the top and the pyramids are an awe-inspiring glorification of all that. Should they be torn down? As with the Stone Mountain relief I don’t think I care either way but I find the question interesting nevertheless. Maybe it’s the distance of time between when the work is erected and when people start questioning the sentimental basis of the work what’s important? I have no idea.

  10. I visited Stone Mountain last year. Beautiful place, very picturesque, and that stone carving is incredible.
    I must have missed the white hoods and burning crosses, but then, it was cloudy that day.

  17. From a Canadian perspective. The French in Quebec had their asses handed to them in 1759-60. Shouldn’t that mean that Anglo-Canadians should not tolerate the intolerant Fleur-de-lis. The have institutionalized racism unlike the South. But I forgot one thing. Canada had slavery back then.   20. I note you identified the flag as the battle flag. Right on. I believe it was the battle flag of The Army of Virginia. The actual flag of the Confederacy is somewhat different. I note urbane and iconic broadcaster Lisa, blandly called it “The Confederate Flag” last night.

    Instead of a rational and reasoned discourse, I noticed certain Black persons inveighing against not only that battle flag, but even against the statue of Jefferson Davis (President of the Confederate States). I detect literally sheer hate in their voices. I will concede this last point is debatable.

(This refers to how far you are up a river, which is why Ontario was Upper Canada). Anyway, in 1776, an American army crossed the St. Lawrence at Trois Rivieres, with the intention of taking Montréal. A French farmer lead them into a swamp, and sent word to British troops close by, who turned up and captured some, put the rest of them to flight. The Obama administration have done all that is humanly possible to fan the flames of insurrection in America. The amnesty program, the ‘gay’ policy, Obamacare, racial tensions, foreign policy, the IRS scandal are all a concentrated attempt to create a national condition that would allow the Democrats to suspend the Constitution. We have seen all of this before and evidently we have not learned, so we may be doomed to repeat it. The National Socialist Party of Germany in the 1930’s formed the blueprint and the Democrats have enhanced the procedure. With only a 16 month window available now, we can expect things to ramp up proportionally and wonder who will be caught up in the coming conflagration.

  37. So if revisionist history is all the rage today because of things that happened in the past that are embarrassing they simply must remove all references to slavery from the books. I mean, really, I would say that most Libs and many Cons and everything in between would consider slavery THE most embarrassing thing that ever occurred – possibly tied with the displacement of the natives.
    So, from now on, I hereby declare that slavery never happened in North America. In fact, I think the word itself should be removed from all dictionary references as well. If it never happened, it wasn’t a ‘thing’. Does that make me a slavery denier?

    First of all, information on this is sketchy at best. Historians conclude that the number of Blacks who would have fought for the Confederates would be a number that was less than one hundred to at the most a few hundred. Roughly 250,000 Black men fought for the union.
    As for those who fought for the Confederates… Jews worked with the Nazis. By your argument that justifies Nazi actions.

    No the information isn’t sketchy at best, it’s DOCUMENTED.
    Further, you carefully glossed over the FACT that there were ‘some 500,000 free blacks scattered throughout the South’ ( @ 16:45 – 17:24 of video) in the Confederate States of America; 60,000 alone in the state of Virginia.
    The perspective given, is to reflect on how it WAS, not how you WISH history to be.
    Try to deal with the FACTS, not the views as trotted out propaganda for simpletons.
    By your metrics, the current Ukrainians, like the former Ukrainians in WWII, fighting the Russians are all fascists; and thus we should accept willy nilly the views of ex-KGB operative Putin.

    The cause of the war of Northern Aggression is simple. The industrialized North sought a monopoly on the processing of Southern Cotton for it’s mills….not British mills.

    Fort Sumpter in Charleston Harbour bottled up exported cotton by military force….that’s the causus beli……..
    Nothing to do with slavery.

  49. Slavery was an excuse of convenience for the Union. To say anything else would be to admit they beat down the South for economic reasons, to protect Northern industry. That sounds pretty petty compared to ending slavery.
    Southerners discount the slavery part because 90% of Southern soldiers owned no slaves. They were much more worried about getting a fair price for their goods. The South was treated like an American colony and it rebelled.
