“That’s what Albertans asked for.”
Alberta’s current policy, which puts a $15-per-tonne levy on heavy carbon emitters, was to have expired last December, but the deadline was extended six months by the former PC government. At one point the Alison Redford regime considered doubling the carbon levy, but successor Jim Prentice appeared to back away from the idea.
Environmentalists said doubling the levy would be a start, but it needs to be increased dramatically to change behaviour, and more stringent emission reduction targets are also required.
Phillips wouldn’t say if her government will increase the carbon levy.
“We’re looking at our options right now,” she said.

The Pembina Institute and Greeenpeace are licking their chops as they will have a big hand in writing any new legislation. But Rachel won’t make a move until after October as she will need to run cover for Tommie Mulcair during the federal election campaign.
To all environmentalists: stop driving any vehicles that are not 100% electric; no wait, electricity has to be produced somewhere too, right? Okay, bicycles only; no wait, bikes are made from steel, aluminum, plastics and other materials that require a huge amount of energy to produce. Okay, let’s make this simple:
Nothing consumed that has to be transported using fossil fuels. Produce all your own food and light – but no kerosene lamps! No modern medical treatments or medicines. No shelter built using energy not produced by the sun or wind. Transport by foot only.
You with me so far? Good – now move out to the bush, no assistance from any modern technology since it is all tainted by the production of CO2. Now lie down. Roll onto your side – choose either one, doesn’t matter. Draw your knees up to your chest. Very good. Stay there until you die, because it’ll be way less painful than trying to survive the way you keep telling the rest of us to.
I won’t speculate on motives, but facts are facts. If you navigate to the home page of the Canadian Council of Chief Executive Officers and click on the staff tab you get this: http://www.ceocouncil.ca/about-ccce/ccce-staff
Read the bios. Almost without exception the staffers are former high-level, pco or Min. of Industry staff (or worse).
Anyone who has been around the block knows “Secretariat staff” have a huge influence on organizational policy and that decision makers have a tendency to take the advice of those they pay handsomely.
When the highest dollar value leaders of Canadian industry are taking their policy points from (former?) apparatchiks of the pco and other federal sink holes of global dumb down policy, where do you think their policy direction is headed?
Sort of explains the Suncor’s’ guys comments about seeking a carbon tax recently IMO.
I remember boob rae saying the same thing about Ontarians in 1990. The next 4.5 years of hell did offer some opportunities. I see those same opportunities arising in Alberta, and I am poised to take advantage. Go ahead, destroy your energy market, destroy your real estate markets, Ontario carpetbaggers have kept their powder dry, time to use it. Sad for someone who just paid top dollar for a house, I will offer you 50 cents on the dollar when you cant make the mortgage payment or it goes into foreclosure.
Apparently Alberta oil production has taken a dive in the last month. The news broadcast says it had to do with shutdowns from forest fires. I suspect some unspoken oil company negotiating may already be taking place.
sums it up nicely – thanks 🙂
Albertans should be careful what they wished for. I don’t think the AB NDP are going to wait to give the federal NDP cover. Besides their opinions (triple carbon taxes, raise minimum wage to $15) are front and centre and will be useful for the Tories to exploit when challenging Mulcair, as Ontario does when mentioning Mr Trudeau.
After all it’s a “three way race” eh?
Will Albertans hit the barricades as many have mentioned when the NDP, soon IMHO, starts their socialist machinery? This is a good lab for what Canadians can expect from an NDP federal government, now that Trudeau has made himself irrelevant.
Alberta issimply reaping what it sewed. i am an albertan i voted wild rose, Enjoy the decline alberta this is going to hurt.
For 10 years, the province of Ontario has relied on money transfers from Alberta. But fast action by the Alberta NDP appear to be putting an end to that, as Alberta GDP output tanks rapidly thanks to their actions.
http://www.rigzone.com/news/oil_gas/a/138870/Europes_Top_Oil_Firms_Jointly_Call_for_Carbon_Pricing?utm_source=DailyNewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=2015-06-01&utm_content=&utm_campaign=industry_headlines_1
Just read that!! we know its a global thing,it was aplan all along to put alberta in line. This islegalized theft. these lazy slobs are scum UN Agenda 21 jerksare not able to produce anything of value themselves so they use the pento extract it. and the big wigs in the oil n gas industry dont care they are safe.
There is basically zero recognition in Alberta that a storm is coming. People think this down turn is a blip. They think it’ll be temporary like 2009. There’s too many dots to connect for ordinary people to realize that things are going to get painful…and then more painful.
Albertans have experienced easy prosperity for a generation…with only slight bumps in the road that were quickly turned around. They’ve never experienced an NDP government at the reigns during an oil bust no less.
I am trying to let people know, without sounding like John Connor in Terminator: Salvation…but it just doesn’t get through to people. They have no idea what’s coming.
When I moved to Edmonton in 1994, I was able to buy a 10th flr, one bedroom condo in the Strathcona House Bldg in front of the 109th St bridge with a view of the Legislature for $71K (legal costs included). I’ll be retiring in the next 5 yrs or so. I wonder if I’ll be able to do that again? Come on NDP!! I’ve missed AB.

Thank goodness that Alberta was in a bit of a down turn when these socialists were elected. Can you imagine the power drunk destruction if these were boom times ? They will still destroy what they touch, but at a much slower pace. Perhaps it will still be salvageable after 4 years. Hope springs eternal.
The Alberta NDP probably will lie low until Mulcair or a Lib/Dip coalition is in Federal government, then together they can create the U.N.-compliant Country they’ve always wanted.
The Environment and Women’s Minister has just sent a clear message, and it isn’t good news.
I don’t think people really understand or appreciate how bad things are at the moment. Remember the financial crisis that bloodied every financial market in 2007-08? Alberta basically skated through that but this is our reckoning.
Downtown Calgary is being decimated. Thousands upon thousands of people have lost their jobs, a lot of small service companies have gone under, and there are some big players who have about another year and then they will be in immediate danger. Add to all of this the royalty review process and the NDP tax hikes – we could be looking at two more capital budget periods before any hiring starts again. Things are really, really bad and they aren’t going to get better soon.
Three things:
First: It will bo great to see Ontario and particularly Quebec, get very low funding from transfer payments. They HATE the Oil Sands, and now they will get their wish of less oil production.
Second: I know how the Non Democratic Party will win the next federal election. They will do like they did in Alberta; they got all the union voters in Edmonton first, and their friends, then got all the unions in Alberta to support them. If you look at election map, it is in centers where there are many union workers that had the most votes. Most of the Wildrose Party votes are rural.
Third: As for the carbon tax; they will increase it for two reasons:
First, they have to fund all their expensive social projects and union increases in salary and pensions.
Second: they have to appease their enviroMENTALists supporters – who push for the closure of the Oil Sands – they will get their wish and perhaps be the first to leave Alberta looking for work in other provinces.
The only thing that saves Alberta right now is ISIS conquering Saudi Arabia. Elections have consequences.
Good grief…ISIS IS a Saudi (Sunni) proxy being used against Syria (Shia) Iran (Shia) and Hezbollah (Shia). Very credible sources support the theory ISIS and affiliates are also funded by USA and Israel…the gun running from Libya was part of this strategy (Chris Stevens).
Alberta: old Cree word meaning “land of sensitive cowboys and green rig pigs”.
Elections have consequences. I don’t feel sorry for Alberta at all. All conservatives that just sat around and whined about the pcs instead of doing something resulted in this. Democracy isn’t about only showing up to vote. You need to get involved if you actually want to affect change.
Why do Dippers want to make Canada COLDER???
@pete: those “credible sources” of yours, are they by any chance Youtube videos by and of Arabs with English subtitles? Because that’s all an Arab a$$hole on Facebook could provide when I asked him for sources.
If you can do better, let’s see them, kay? Otherwise you’re just another drooling brain-dead sock puppet with the usual anti-US/Israel issues.
Oh hey, it’s amazing what a little research can accomplish; pics of “pete” and “Blame Crash”. A little sprucing up wouldn’t hurt, B.C. Srsly.
I don’t think we Albertans are looking for sympathy, after all we brought this on ourselves. We will take our medicine. Straight.
Those of us who have been around for awhile and remember the fallout from the 70’s boom would not wish those results on anyone. Loosing your job, house, vehicle etc is a pretty grim prospect.
I anticipate the carbon levy will be tempered by a sales tax. We will received the full measure of socialist largess.
I don’t look forward to any of it, but it is coming.
https://www.google.ca/?gws_rd=ssl#q=saudi+israel+funding+isis&start=10
There are thousands of references in multiple news sources. Nato ally Turkey is threatening to jail a newspaper editor who just ran a story about the Turks also funding/arming ISIS.
Moreover this is the explicit strategy delineated in Israel’s 1998 “Clean Break” strategy….a document that was crafted by most of the same authors of the PNAC policy document that called for a taking out Iraq…way before 911…but clearly reading and understanding what is actually happening would get in the way of your silly posturing and “nah nah I can’t hear you” appeal to logic, so you can safely ignore it and go back to trolling. ttfn
“Saskatoon Oilers” has a nice ring to it. “Regina Flames”?
JAMES AND ABTRAPPER!!
I whole heartedly agree I donated , volunteered, went to town halls and even campaigned for wild rose. Every chance i get i talk to youngsters and about god and politics. they are not taboo at all if you have 2 grown mature adults discussing it.
No sympathy required for Alberta here! No sensitive cowboys either. i voted wildrose the last 3 elections. I tried to affect change. But people have forgotten where their bread is buttered and yes it is largely by the oil and gas sector.
I was in the hospital today sitting in the waiting room, announcement came on the tv that the tobacco company has to pay 5billion dollars or some stupid amount …anyway old man sitting there said ha! i guess anybody who smokes get’s to sue now. he kinda chuckled then a lady a hippie hipster lookin lady early 30’s (my bad for judging her on appearence) shook her head and said whats next? sue mc donalds because your fat? lol
Anyway we got talking she works as an seamstress/alterations person for HOLT RENFREW she said this time last year people would come in and buy 10-20,000 bags and she would alter them for them , dresses, ect ect. She said its all done finished , went from selling a few bags a day to 0 in 2 weeks, and it will only get worse i told her she could not believe ndp got into power ALL of her friends were happy she said. But she wasn’t.I think she has understanding of basic economics and politics anyway a china man said “this NDP so stoopid” Then went back to watching the tv news lol.
I told her all about wild rose, globull warming un agenda 21 as much as i could before we parted ways. She was in total aww and disbelief but strangely understood. she said her friends bought a house with 7 bathrooms right near Balzac a small mansion and he did custom furniture for millionaires and oil n gas ppl. UH OHHHH!!!! my own friend took possession of his 850k house in chestermer custom home a week later laid off 2 kids 3rd on the way wife doesn’t work. I dont think these people get it, they think you can work in a welding shop in calgary and make 1000/day like out on the rigs…they don’t get it. funny enough though i met lots LOTS of 18-25 year olds working the rigs who had saved money and bought several apartment condos and rent them out. i met a kid who was 22 years old saved almost every penny from his derekhand position bought a 4 plex lives in one suite and rents the others out and almost had the entire mortgage paid off …..in Edmonton. So it seems to me the 25-55 year olds are going to get hit the worst probably because they came from other places looking for money lived the high life and are now going to get the horns.
“Moose Jaw Stampeders”
Lac La Ronge Eskimos
EVERY SINGLE ONE of the hits Google brought up is more whackjobs with the same dribbling-f*ckup Nazi scumbag agenda as you, the very first hit being about Mark Dankof, known Nazi and conspiracy theorist. How is this supporting your theory? God, I love it when idiots like you open their flies and take a huge pi$$ all over themselves in public like that!
I just read about Clean Break; nothing there about beheading boys for raising pigeons that I can see. In any event, if the goal of ISIL is to promote Israel’s interests, that is clearly an innate good and should be supported. Sadly, only a Proboscis Monkey would believe it.
Oh, and dumbo: calling someone who is welcome here (as opposed to you) a troll is diagnostic of trolling. I never said I “can’t hear you,” I said you’re a f*cking loony. See the difference? Well done, collect your Doctorate of Smartology at the door – assclown! 😀
Maybe the country’s economy, and the transfer payment system, will no longer benefit from the oil industry but we can always run up trillions in government debt and live high on the hog for years, lefties seem to object when the Chinese buy oil companies and mineral rights but they don’t seem to mind the idea of Chinese owning billions in Canadian government bonds.
Here’s a parting thought peter, since you aren’t worth any more of my time and effort:
“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”
“Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.”
“War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.”
This is YOU, peter! You are the willing pawn of lunatics who want you to share their illness. And because you have acquiesced, YOU are now insane and there isn’t a damn thing I can do to help you, but it’s been a slice anyway – sorta. Some people might think it’s wrong to mock the afflicted, but I’m convinced that doesn’t apply to dregs like you who got sick because you WANTED TO. And sorry to everyone else for going OT, but it beats actually shooting them preemptively on the chance they’ll go kill an unarmed guard at a war memorial.
Bye now peter. Enjoy your insanity until you either get well or die.
I disagree with Uri Avnery’s politics, however his pedigree as a Zionist and Israeli war hero probably eclipses yours. You should read his biography on his web site and consider his commentary on what “winning” looks like. Your Straussian perspective of creative destruction and your ad hominem attack and artless evasion and straw manning (The London Telegraph is one of the sources) label you for what you are…not my observation of your behavior.
Of COURSE I’m a Zionist, you obtuse slack-jawed Mommy’s-basement-dwelling little puke. I was seriously considering changing my name to “Orde Wingate Junior” at one point. Welcome to a forum that is a comfortable meeting place for a lot of other Zionists in case you didn’t know. Take a wrong turn at Bong Alley, dumbass?
Now pi$$ off, adults are having a discussion here, not in any way related to your glaring Jew-hatred.
Super. Time to separate
We will call the preamble separape
If Alberta separates, I will become a citizen in the time it takes to buy a plane ticket. NDP voters or not, there are WAY fewer prancing masturbating circus geeks like “peter” above in that beautiful land.
Come to think of it, first order of business might be to expel anyone of that stripe; they’ll be more than welcome in BC, Ontario, or failing that, Iran or North Korea where batshit craziness is regarded as a virtue.
What Micheal H Anderson said!!
“That’s what Albertans asked for.”.
Incorrect. We asked for an end to the PC dynasty. You now have the opportunity to impress us with your ability to govern thoughtfully, without blindly pushing the hard left ideology. Because you’re so much smarter than us degenerate rednecks, and should just sit down, shut up, and let the ‘experts’ run things.
If you really think that Albertans want the green/socialist agenda jammed down our throats, you’re in for a nasty surprise in 5 years.
Why the Avnery though was in my mind was a post I just read, “The map On the wall”. I think there is some serious wisdom in the words. http://original.antiwar.com/avnery/2015/05/31/the-map-on-the-wall/.
As to the rest, I’ve been coming here and commenting for at least a dozen years. I’ve also been an active supporter and worker for conservative ideals for at least that long. Some examples of conservative ideas expressed as legislation I admire are The Dief’s Bill of Rights Act and His Statutory Instruments Act.
If we just followed those two laws, things would go far better here…of late the CPC seems pretty far away from those ideals
The government they deserve?
@Paul: thanks mate! 🙂
@peter: well, that IS interesting. When did you magically transform from a supporter of conservative ideals into a Truther, ISIL Edition? What made your love of rationality go down the crapper? Inquiring minds…well, don’t really give a damn actually. We could go round in circles forever but why? You’ve shown your true colours in lavish detail already.
While you’re working on that you can also enjoy some web resources *I* enjoy.

Thanks for that article BTW “peter” – I especially loved this bit:
“…history shows that it is neither strong armies nor an abundance of weapons that guarantees peace. It is the goodwill of all sides…”
Yeah, that really got me choked up. Shall we join hands for a round of “Kumbaya” now? Wonder how he spent his time in the Knesset – knitting maybe? What a fool; Orde Wingate would have known what to think of him, and so would Ben-Gurion, and Meir, and frankly anyone not on galantamine.
No Problem Micheal you deserve the praise, and quit honestly wish politicians would speak more clairvoyant like you.
I remeber reading and austrailian article where 2 politicians were going at it until the conservative one told him to pullhis head out of his arse and f-off!!
Paul, I don’t think most people want to hear the truth and will never elect a genuinely honest person to office. The truth hurts. That’s why they’re so happy to have their leaders, the MSM, and bug-eyed loonies like peter and his sources lie to them.
Look at the UK and the rest of Europe now, with THOUSANDS of professional leeches in the streets screaming for blood because of the hated “cuts”. You KNOW these are the same people telling the rest of us to give up our “shallow meaningless materialistic lifestyles” and send all humanity back to the root-grubbing caveman life of our ancestors! Again:
“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” – George Orwell.
Those Aussies know a thing or two. Here they’re pathetically scared s_itless of the mainstream media. I like what Thomas Wictor said about that problem in this article: http://www.thomaswictor.com/without-resolve-all-is-lost/, quote: “Are we now at the point at which governments and armed forces are terrified of angering these hypocritical, sanctimonious, lying drunks?”
Cheers man. Keep the faith. My grandfather of blessed memory used to tell me I should go into politics, even when I was a young kid. He saw something in me – a simple natural need to see good prevail over evil and sanity over irrationality, maybe. But I would hate to have my son grow up watching me called “fascist” by inbred parasitic raddled heroin addicts, closet Nazis who look like this guy, and the like. And that’s probably pretty much the same reason most sane, good, intelligent people avoid running for public office.
Hope you and yours have a very pleasant evening. This country isn’t quite in the toilet like most of Europe – yet.
I spent some time late in the election, posting on various e-boards and forums, that the Alberta NDp is the same as the BC version, the Ontario version, etc, etc, coast to coast, the Dips are the same, thru and thru. Ideological SJWs, stopping for nothing.
“No, this is Alberta, a different NDP”……..laughable at the time, and now.
They are doing exactly as expected, believing they were elected to socialize the land, and kill the oil industry, despite their mealy mouthed platitudes.
Alberta, its going to get ugly fugly real fast, the $15/hr minimum wage was a dropping of the gauntlet, just the beginning, of full-on hardcore leftism. And I thought the BC Dips were a radical lot.
Michael, I have been putting out a challenge to all green freaks for years now. my challenge was and is, do without any fossil fuels for thirty days. I will be the arbitrator of just what constitutes fossil fuel use. many of your items would indeed be part of my prohibition. death would be the end result of living without fossil fuels for thirty days because you would have to start naked, in the woods, without anything.
“If Alberta separates…”
Ain’t gonna happen…ever.
Paul in Calgary @ 1:16pm >
I’m with you there bud!
I’ve been calling to cool Albertas hot economy for years now. Of course I voted WRP and not NDP for moral & ethical reasons, but I’m not overly dismayed that the NDP won only in that they will decimate the economy for awhile. Thus cooling the growth and sending the Squatters home.
I say bring it on, evey bubble needs a market correction and Alberta’s needed a pop.
Yup – they’d end up just like this idiot. Which obviously would be GOOD THING.
Please greenies – practice what you preach, yesterday if possible. We’ll be standing at the city limits waving bye-bye. Then the biggest block party and BBQ in the history of the planet would begin. 🙂
