  4. In the wake of the attack on Charlie Hebdo, it’s unimaginable that this can happen in Canada. First time I’ve had three comments deleted in one day by CBC.ca

    Thus what the CBC is saying here is simple. If you want to comment on this story, look at it our way, or we’ll delete your comments.
    I will note that I’ve never had a comment deleted on National post or Sun News.

  6. I’ve never commented on the CBC’s website and don’t follow them on Facebook / Twitter.
    The comments I’ve posted on National Post / Calgary Herald (prior to last month or so when it went subscription only) and Sun news including all 3 of these social sites have never been censored or deleted.
    If the CBC wanted your opinion, they’d give it to you first… 😉

    How many billions? A recent report by the Fraser Institute put the total cost of all federal “tax expenditures,” as they’re called in official parlance, at $155-billion. Some of these are defensible: for example, RRSPs and Tax Free Savings Accounts, though counted as tax expenditures, do not introduce new distortions into the tax system, but rather remove them, preventing the double-taxation of savings that would otherwise occur. But the report identified no fewer than 68 tax credits that served mostly political ends and complicate the tax code for no identifiable benefit to society. Total cost: $23-billion.
    An extra $23-billion in federal revenue would have balanced the books two years ago. Or, as the Institute recommends, it could be used to dramatically lower tax rates on the middle class, dropping both the current 22% and 26% brackets down to the 15% base rate, at no net cost to the treasury. That would leave 98% of Canadians paying the lowest rate, while the remaining 2% paid the 29% top rate. (The report includes a further option of raising the threshold at which the top rate would apply to $250,000, though this would mean some net loss of revenue.)
    Not a fan of the the Harper special tax cuts. They should be eliminated and the the marginal tax rates reduced overall as recommended by the Fraser institute. That’s a lot of coin in everyday peoples’ pockets.

Mulcair says the lack of transparency on the part of the government is shocking. “The prime minister has not been honest with Canadians on this issue,” Mulcair said. “He has to come clean and he has to do it quickly. Every time he was asked, he said, ‘No, they would not be involved in combat.’ And every time they were involved in combat, we asked and they said, ‘No, it is not a combat mission.’

    Normally I just put up with the BS from our mediocracy, but this is ridiculous. I guess if Canadian troops came under fire in Canada (oh right, they did) that would be an unauthorized combat mission.
