Thanks Kate–a Happy New Year to all!!
Many years ago, we celebrated New Years eve in a small SW Saskatchewan hotel.
A fellow from New Brunswick had arrived in our town, out of the blue, and had worked on a combining crew. He decided to stay for the winter. At the New Year’s party, he got everyone dancing. We had no band, but we did have a Wurlitzer jukebox filled with 45 RPM records.
This was one of our favorites in or about 1970. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9GuXdV5dBQ

Just as a, er, reader tip, that particular rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” was extremely well chosen.
On the other hand, all of my ferns have new shoots, which I hope is a good sign for this new year.

National Post, Wednesday, Dec. 31. Andrew Coyne says the left is winning: http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2014/12/30/andrew-coyne-in-the-contest-of-ideas-the-left-is-winning/
AC: “in the contest of ideas, the left is very much on the march” … “the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan” … “serious proposals on the table for a national daycare plan, a national pharmacare plan” … “[t]he left is doing all the running on the environment” … “[i]dentity politics, with its obsessive focus on race, sex and class, dominates public discourse.”
“What counter-proposal has anyone heard from the right in the last year, or the last decade: to get the state out of something it is now doing, to deregulate an industry or privatize a Crown corporation or, well, pretty much anything?”
Good question. Too many “right-wing” politicians become corrupted by the system, and lose their principles. Either that or they didn’t have any principles to begin with.
However, all of these leftist policies are coercive, and thus violate the fundamental moral principle of a civilized society, namely that no person has the right to initiate the use of force or fraud on any other person. If the right would point that out a little more frequently, relying on the fact that people don’t want to be pushed around, it might get somewhere. Most people don’t want to pay for services that others are using. The problem is that they often are quite willing to have others pay for services that they use. And the left exploits this lack of consistent moral principle.
The whole leftist viewpoint is based on fantasy, beginning with Immanuel Kant divorcing reason from reality, then G. W. F. Hegel claiming to use reason while forgetting, and being completely out of touch with, reality.
It relies on notions like (a) government officials obtain special insights into human life and society by virtue of their appointment, therefore (b) government officials are perfect and never make mistakes (except when it comes to capital punishment). Both of which are obvious nonsense.
The anti-capitalists also ignore the fact that an economy is based on voluntary trade between individuals for mutual benefit, and that coercive measures that interfere with this trade can do nothing but lower the standard of living. That’s another point the right should be shouting from the rooftops.
Thanks Kate and same to you and yours.
Happy New Year everyone.
