  1. What’s most amazing is that this is done entirely without cranes, forklifts, scaffolding and yes, union labour!
Gee, a couple of crews like this and Saskatchewan’s new Mosaic Stadium could be up and running a year sooner and two hundred million under budget!!

  2. Many are looking at this video and stating it is a great testament to teamwork and community. While it clearly represents those things, it can be blurred into liberal-social ideals. I think this video is a testament of a people who do not rely on government. They do not receive social security numbers, government handouts, “Obama phones,” and other “benefits” coveted by most in America. They are not a vaccinated, fluoridated, chlorinated, medicated, pasteurized people. They think for themselves and do not accept the status quo just because it is the status quo. They do not have an obesity epidemic either. I am glad to have Amish as neighbors and friends.

YES. They set a very good example of how to live a good life. I too am glad to have Amish as neighbors and friends.

  4. been watching te Roosevelt thin currently on PBS.
I’m curious. Do you caustic hard right wing extremists slosh Eleanor with the same brush used on FDR?
vitriol vitriol vitriol. apparently the quant saying about Germans incapable of remembering anything between 39 and 45 applies to you also, ie the FACT that between the 2 of them Winston and Franklin saved the whole @&%~!$ WORLD.
hint: right wing extremism is 2nd cousin to fascism.
    just curious.

  5. I was going to post this in the most recent “We Don’t Need No Stinking Giant Fans” comment, but thought I’d comment here.
Don’t know if anyone read this:
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/new-premier-prentice-says-canada-needs-new-markets-for-alberta-oil/article20651943/
“While the Premier concedes emissions from the oil sands will continue to rise over the next several years, the province can make GHG emission inroads elsewhere, he believes. The province gets 85 per cent of its electricity from coal-fired plants – many of which were built in the 1960s and 70s.
“They’re all nearing the end of their useful life,” he said. “They’re in their wind-down phase and can be phased out and we can achieve very significant emissions reductions just by not burning coal. Coal is the source of most of the carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Forty per cent come from burning coal.”
He said he’s a big believer in renewable energy, noting that Alberta already has more capacity from wind power than anywhere else in the country. He said solar energy is also developing quickly. “I think what we should be doing is making investments in those areas in the context of an overall climate plan for the province,” Mr. Prentice said. “I think as people have seen in the early days since I’ve been Premier, this is not business as usual anymore in Alberta.””
So is the cunning plan to really replace baseload electricity with intermittent solar and wind? Really?
You are out of the gate and off to a very poor start Jim.

  6. Couldn’t care less about Eleanor. She gets less coverage in conservative media than in liberal,
who are titillated by the fact that maybe, just maybe, she was lesbian.
I don’t know about American conservatives, but Canadians respect the fact that Roosevelt
intended to win the war and dragged the US kicking and screaming into it. You know, the
Atlantic Accord was signed before the US entered the war? My own Dad worked
on the program to get American fighters to Britain via Canada. They were brought to the
border and dragged across. This was kept deeply secret from Americans – of course everybody
else had a good idea what was going on.
Oh yes – history. The US won the Pacific war, with assistance from Britain. The European war
was won by the Russians, who destroyed 2/3 of all German men and materiel, excepting
naval assets, which were largely taken care of by the RN with some help from the Canadians
and the USN. This is rather an oversimplification but it is enough for simple minds.
The conservative sees Fascism, Communism, and modern liberalism as different aspects of the
same phenomenon. In fact Jonah Goldberg has written a book on the matter, “Liberal Fascism”,
that you would do well to read before you go further in your career as a troll.
Oh yes – and it is evident that the one thing you are NOT is a “history buff”.

  7. BWAHAHAHAHA, HAHAHAHA, BWAAAAAHAHAHAHA.
Sorry, I found that one of the funniest things I’ve read on here in a long time. “been watching te Roosevelt thin currently on PBS.” Grammar and diction tell us a lot about how well someone has educated themselves (not to be confused with formal education without a healthy dose of common sense). You immediately come across as a light-weight with pretensions of a good education.
“vitriol vitriol vitriol. apparently the quant saying about Germans incapable of remembering anything between 39 and 45 applies to you also, ie the FACT that between the 2 of them Winston and Franklin saved the whole @&%~!$ WORLD.” You forgot about the rest of the British Empire – 1 in 10 Canadians in uniform, 1 in 3 directly working for the war effort as an example. You also forgot Stalin. Arguably, without Hitler lying to his fellow leftist and launching Operation Barbarosa, Britain would have fallen before the US entered the war. Wouldn’t this render your main point moot? (I think so, but I may have to take this back because I’m not sure what your main point is.) Hitler was a great propagandist, but stunk as a general. Similar to you as a historian. Assembling the necessary information and infrastructure means nothing if you can’t stand aside when appropriate.
Oh, and if you want to know what others think, try asking them instead of insulting them. I infer from your tone that you’ve been schooled a few times by people who can assemble arguments far better than you. Try getting the background knowledge before the attitude. It will do wonders for you in the long run.

  8. The US supplied the Reds with rations, boots, Dodge 21/2 ton trucks, aviation gasoline, etc. The Americans were the one indispensable country among the Allies, in Europe, and the Pacific. Winston Churchill wrote that he retired to bed on Dec 7, 1941, and ” slept the sleep of the saved “.

  9. Clearly the barn wasn’t built near Edmonton because the time lapse would have shown winter come and go and they still wouldn’t have had their building permit!

  10. This “Amish Barn Raising” video is a total fake. I watched “7 Brides for 7 Brothers” three times, so I KNOW!

  11. I’m sure that Eleanor and Uncle Joe run eternally through the meadows of your mind, historybuff, and that Frank and Alger talk through eternity about the treachery of Whittaker Chambers!

  12. 2 or 3 weeks ago when I first watched this video, one of the comments was “Socialism at its best(or finest)” something to those regards. It was evident that: 1) the lady has no idea what socialism is, and 2) she has no idea what the Amish stand for or where they came from(or why they’re here).

  13. Yes, Russia won ww2, however it would have been impossible for the Red Army to move the masses of troops and supplies on the primitive roads to the front lines without American Studebaker 6×6 trucks. Nearly 200 thousand US6 2½ ton Studebaker trucks were sent into the Soviet Union via the Persian Corridor. About two-thirds of the Russian Lend Lease trucks were Studebakers. It fulfilled many roles in the Red Army, such as pulling artillery and was renowned for its ruggedness and reliability. Although most Red Army tank units were equipped with Soviet-built tanks, their logistical support was provided by U.S.-made trucks. Trucks such as the Dodge 3/4 ton and Studebaker 2½ ton were crucial to the Soviet success. Soviet Union only produced 130,000 trucks themselves.

  14. Indeed. If he was serious, he’d be talking about building a nuclear power plant in Fort McMurray.

  15. For decades many have been saying that nuclear is the only practical way to extract the oilsands.
Since it’s inception, the oilsands production has been little more than using cheap Alberta gas to extract expensive Alberta oil. The EROI is about half that of conventional oil for the open mine operations, and about the same EROI for in-situ operations as producing biodiesel using petroleum for fuel and fertilizer.

  17. history buff, you need to read more history. fascism and communism are much the same and are totalitarian and of the left. the differences are minimal.

  18. Oh jeez HB, I have never been called a caustic hard right wing extremist before. But thanks; it’s nice to know I am pissing off the intended targets!!!

  19. What a load of codswallaop you speak. You are worthy of insult. Fascism relates to style and technique, not philosophy. Most fascists, including Hitler and Mussolini, were on the left.

  20. Don’t expect any retort from historybuff. He slithered back under his bridge and is sobbing uncontrollably licking his butt, which was so adroitly handed to him.

  21. My letter to the Alberta Premier’s office:
    Sir,
While being a resident of another Province, I still must take issue with you on matters of national import.
Your position on “green house gasses” is absurd. There is no man-made global warming. While CO2 has continued to rise, the temperature has remained flat for 17 years. This falsifies the theory; it is wrong.
CO2 is good for the planet, it is the staff of life.
I do not understand why you would utter such rubbish as to be a believer in renewable energy, just ask the Spanish or Ontarians. It is a scam and fraud, farming of government subsidies. Those around you advocating such policies should be regarded with extreme skepticism.
    Yours Sincerely

Where is this coming from? Verdict – Guilty, on all counts – our education system that is! Our teachers earning $ 90,000 per year produce illiterate arseholes like this? Whether he has anything meaningful to say at all is clearly irrelevant because the frigged up grammar is so distracting – screams stupid.
