Because giving parents $40 a day and extending the school year isn’t going to make you any friends either. This is the most strike happy union in Canada, treat them as such.

“Longer school year” – of course!
The Liberal left would love to have your kids 24&7/ 365 if they could get you to pay for it. They’d build Liberal Residential Schools modeled after the aboriginal ones last century.
Only this time it’d be full on daddy loves daddy in a Maoist utopian sort of way.
This demonstrates the ill of state monopoly of education.
Homeschooling is the answer……
Log onto the KHAN Academy internet site and kiss off the bastard unionists holding a half million HOSTAGES for teachers OWN SELF INTEREST!
These same public sector union shitbags are holding Ontarrible hostage to their extortion and they have owned 2 Liberal governments/leaders – it is one of the main reasons that province is atrophied.
Public sector unionism is a gross incumberance on the cost and operation of government services – outlaw them and jail the leadership.
“The Liberal left would love to have your kids 24&7/ 365 if they could get you to pay for it.”
Very true.
Great opportunity to go on a major offensive with private schools, create a very funding friendly environment for parents to move their children to an institution that works for them rather than the other way around. Oh I forgot, this article is about BC.
Or have some real guts and pull a reagan. Give them 24 hours to return to the job or consider yourself unemployed. However, nobody has the guts like him anymore.
Dave, that was my first thought on the matter. Reagan had the right idea. The teachers want unreasonable wages and hours of work. They are not doing a good job as it is. Time to reset the whole thing.
Oldwhiteguy, I so agree about the lack of performance. Just go out and hire a just out of high school or even flippin university kid and ask the person to write a business letter but let me check it before it goes out. It’s sad. They don’t know grammar, spelling or even what a paragraph is for. Let’s not even start on punctuation. And these kids have graduated for heaven sakes. It is time to privatize public education and get rid of the unions. They don’t care about students they only care about union dues and nice fat retirement packages for the union bosses. Despite what they constantly say that “They are doing this for the Students”….NO, the students and parents are risking their child’s future economic outlook by not teaching the kids. Shouldn’t that lack of performance count for something in the final equation.
The only long term answer is a “Right To Work” law allowing people to opt out of joining a union.
Twenty four states in the US now have “Right To Work” laws. It’s time for the idea to spread to Canada.
It’s the only way of curtailing Public Sector Unions, short of outlawing them.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-to-work_law
The union wants to be legislated back at this point. Their strike fund ran out in June and teachers are NOT being paid. As much as I hate Christie Clark, I think she is trying to force the union to eat its own members.
Waiting it out is good for everyone else.
Very true. That way they could brainwash your kids from a very early age. Although in the long run it did not work out well in the Soviet Union. The people finally saw through this. But the lasting damage to the family is still there. (See the Captain’s thread above.)
Jay
Very true, all unions sacrifice their youngest on the altar of socialism, to reward the most senior/lazy/incompetent that have endured their destiny (lol).
Starve them out, is what I have thought, since they admitted they spent their strike fund onother things. Isn’t that fraud?……The truth is, if you have a kid in Grade 12, they can’t stay out forever. We have a contingency plan for that. When they do come back, we will ensure he gets just the courses he needs, for his Grad, and the credits necessary. If you have a heartbeat, you cangraduate from HS in BC, sad state of affairs really, the functionally illiterates are everywhere.
As it turns out, they have previously been deemed an “essential service” at the LRB, and that is likely how they will be forced back, rather than have a contract imposed, that’s how we got here.
And at this point, it appears the teachers want to be abused by government, rather than get realistic. The BCTF is truly a ufcked up bunch of idiots~
“Although in the long run it did not work out well in the Soviet Union. The people finally saw through this.”
Josef Stalin had a 49% approval in Russia, (Feb 2013).
Joe Molnar >
Homeschooling is the answer……”
That’s also true – unfortunately only Muslims can legally homeschool in this “Social Justice” day & age, everyone else gets a SWAT team and CPS visit.
Fire. Them. All.
If it’s like Ontario, there are 2X the number of unemployed teachers
waiting in the wings. I bet they’d work for 25% less…..
I say do the Reagan thing. Universities across western Canada have been pumping out more teachers from their Education Colleges than local school boards can hire. There are thousands of qualified teachers around who would willingly give up driving cab; working retail; etc. and move to BC to teach. All BC has to do is quickly recognize the teaching certificates from other provinces.

Good analysis from Michael Smyth of The Province.
Just running two articles through my mind at the same time, as have a lot of you have probably done. Did the “Shiny Pony” not promote the Chinese administrative process as being the correct way?
He did spend time in the B.C. School system. I not only wonder what courses he took to arrive at this position I am wondering what catechism he learned through rote education? Cheers;
Where else can you get a job with no experience that pays better than $50.00 + benefits per hr?
Simple math 40k teachers, 500k students, = 12.5 students per teacher.
Teachers should be ashamed after 13 years kids have no work skills.
Either do what Reagan did or let them stay on strike forever. The kids won’t learn much more even if they do extend the school year.
It’s time for the majority to start ruling again. Swing the pendulum back.
I am in favor of letting them stay out.
Teachers are much like the rest of us and effectively live pay check to pay check. Watch the media, see what stories are being played up to see what is happening behind the scenes (like they would tell us the truth up front). more stories of teacher hardship, them trying to play the sympathy card is good.
Individual members cannot afford to stay out.
While it is a pity for the students & parents involved, the government must make the union HURT. The people must see the damage that militant public sector unions cause to public services, must see that the services for which they are forced to pay through their taxes can be held hostage by a union not answerable to the people. Only in this painful lesson can the tide slowly turn against these parasites, as the public comes to see the teachers’ union for the greedy buggers that they are.
The BC Liberals are negotiating with the NDP Teachers Union. Its always about politics with socialized anything. Clark will eventually order them back to work and the majority of teachers will quietly be happy about it. The political noise will continue unabated. Privatization is the proper answer but in BC, true conservatives and libertarians could only fill a couple of buses, just slightly less than Alberta or Saskatchewan.
Don’t just legislate them back to work; decertify the teachers’ union altogether, and simply refuse to deal with it. Allow existing teachers who want to work to do so, and hire replacements for those who don’t, and don’t worry about “credentials” the only credential a teacher needs is sufficient knowledge of his/her subject to be able to pass it on.
And if the union tries force or violence to block “scab” teachers, shoot them down.
Why has there been no innovation in schooling thru the use of the internet? Kids love their computers so why not have them learn on-line. The better teachers would be able to address many more students. One on one communication can be easily achieved as required. And the kids will never again be held hostage by a group vested wholly in their own self-interests.
Just one more thought – Should the union and it’s members be charged with child abuse? Just askin’…
Teachers like to be considered professionals.
What other professional constantly present themselves as militant trade unionists?
Can’t have it both ways.
The government has them by the balls this time. By next week all parents will be against the teachers and the teachers will be on the verge of having their houses foreclosed on. They’ve already scheduled another strike vote which to me means there’s some cracks appearing already. This time the government is going to settle this thing once and for all.
Target a teacher – will be the cry before this thing is over.
From a Libertarian POV:
We don’t need more legislation. We need to repeal legislation. First off, repeal any and all legislation that forces parents to sent kids to school. Secondly repeal any and all legislation that prevents competition in the business of schooling. Thirdly repeal any and all legislation that allows unions to violate other people’s property rights. The latter applies to the rights violations current labor laws inflict. Employers should be free to associate or disassociate with employees of their choosing. Ditto for employees. And ditto for the parents of school children. In other words, totally de-politicize the schooling industry.
I’ll happily take my $40/day thank you. Got two younger kids, that’s $80 a day, or $1,600 a month. With that I can get my kids educated in other ways.
I hope the government stands firm until the teachers and their fascist union are literally begging with tears on the faces for their jobs back. I want to seem them crying in the streets picking up recycling to pay their bills.
Sick to death of the BCTF holding parents and children hostage. They can go to hell.
The $40 was a brilliant move by the gov’t. Makes me realize just how little I need the public education system.
It greatly pains me to praise Christie Clark in any way, shape or form.
Fassbender, the education minister was in PR and advertising. He has played this quite masterfully. $40 a day to parents eliminates all the moneys saved during the strike, can’t be used for additional days or signing bonuses. The ball is in the teachers court as they used up all their strike funds (fighting BC Liberals during last election?), timed it for end of year (missed 2 weeks max of school).
How long can these strikers go without pay?
BC funds private schools. I just rode my bike past uniformed school students on my way to the coffee shop here in Port Coquitlam, B.C.
The BC NDP had considered ending funding for private schools when they were in power, but then realized they would have to spend billions building new schools to house all of the new students.
It did not work out well in the sense that communism was ditched and there is now free enterprise of sorts in Russia. Those that still revere Stalin do not equate him with communist ideology but with making the Soviet Union great. They choose to ignore the terror that their grandparents and great grandparents constantly lived under.
Understand, the funding for private schools is not “extra”.
As I point out to the ideologues, those parents pay school taxes tyoo, and have a RIGHT to determine where THEIR taxes go to be spent. In fact, they spend extra to ensure that.
The private school system is very fair, but according to the ideologues, “it drains funds fromt he public school system”
Lies, lies and lies. Bleed the bastards out! Let them beg
