    The subheader on the web page says, “Harper’s seemingly bizarre beef with sociology is actually an ideological attempt to prevent us from being able to identify, and tackle, our structural injustices.”
    But the notion that “structural injustices” arise through “the system” or “neo-liberalism” — by which he surely means capitalism — is itself ideological, and for which Prof. Singh offers no evidence whatsoever.
    Karl Marx defined economic “exploitation” into his view of capitalism nearly 200 years ago, before anyone understood how that system really works. In the 20th century, the Marxists defined “systemic racism” into it too — not on the basis of evidence, but because it fit their ideology. That ideology, which we know as “political correctness”, believes that since the working class of that day failed to overthrow capitalism as Marx predicted it would, it would work to push Marxism through the institutions of society (Gramsci’s idea) and to would attempt to round up the underclasses — minorities, immigrants, the dispossessed and “vulnerable” — into a substitute working class for the purpose of overthrowing capitalism. To attempt this, they had to pretend that capitalism is “systemically racist”, which is why the deranged politically correct left talks about little else — it’s a recruitment method.
    Prof. Singh claims that sociological analysis reveals “pervasive, entrenched social inequalities”. In reality, his sociological ideology defines these problems into the system, rather than finding them honestly.
    An economy is founded on voluntary trade between individuals for mutual benefit, based on the judgment of those individuals regarding the value of what is available for trade. Capitalism is the system in which government does not interfere with this trade, allowing mutual profit to occur and thus the traders to obtain a higher standard of living. Anyone who bases a judgment on an irrelevant consideration, like race and the other usual grounds for discrimination, is hurting himself and lowering his own standard of living.
    Were it not for capitalist productivity over the past couple of hundred years, Prof. Singh today would not be sitting in his ivory tower pontificating airily, he would be out in the fields tending his crops from dawn to dusk in order to survive, just as was the case in every other pre-capitalist society.
