  4. Is there any way an FOI request can be made to resolve the IP to a specific user? It would be really interesting to pin this on an individual, and then watch him struggle to deflect the blame when the Wikipedia records clearly indicate where the revisions came from. And there is a very definite misogynistic slant to the revisions; an action under the hate laws should be possible given the slanderous (and unproven) comments posted.

  5. I’d guess based on studies in my head that the IP leads to a whole swathe of GofC computers, and doing the log file forensics to narrow it down will only happen if there’s a court order.

  8. Some committee of Parliament is charged with keeping things polite and that committee has a Conservative majority. Kate should talk to he MP, presuming it isn’t Goodale. I assume every time someone logs on to a computer, it is using an ID and password. I wouldn’t put it past Mulcair’s Commies. They think Parliamentary resources are their personal slush fund.

  16. I have some stalkers in the federal government and did FOI request, paid my $5 and gave the IP addresses. I wanted the names and titles of the individuals, and was informed it was impossible to trace because they are not identified with a person, rather that the IPs are for a range of individuals and it would take a bazillion hours, etc.

  21. Laura, I am quite certain you are being misled.
    I work for Transport Canada and every computer has a time-out security feature. After x many minutes the screen-lock comes on and my individual password has to be re-entered, the passwords expire every 3 months etc. The only way someone could access my computer account is if they waited until I left my desk and slipped in quickly. I know a couple of people who work in the RCMP and Border Services and protocol there is to sign out every time they leave their desk.
    Also, this does not pass the smell test from a cyber-security point of view. Does anyone believe that a method of anonymously sending sensitive documents, messages etc from the HoC would be allowed to exist? No politician likes whistleblowers and CSIS has warned about foreign cyber-spying for years.

  23. Laura, I work in an IT department for a division of the Ontario health care system. Every time someone logs on or logs off, the computer name and IP of the computer they log on/off of is captured in a log. This is standard practice for most if not all IT departments in the government. Submit your FOI request to ask for the logon/logoff logs for the particular month you’re interested in.

  26. Tracing it to an individual is likely to be difficult. The IP you see is almost certainly a public IP used in network address translation (NAT). Its a standard method of fire-walling, and reducing the number of public IPs required for an organization.
    At any given time, many individual computers may be connected via that single IP address. It would be unusual to log NAT connections (but not impossible).
    They *may* use a web proxy, in which case it *may* keep a log of which sites have been accessed. In that case looking for accesses to wikipedia around the time that the entry was changed may give some useful information.
    Almost certainly, there will be enough information kept that if it were regarded as serious enough, the user could be traced, but it would likely be a monumental task.
    Its worth complaining to whoever is registered as the network abuse manager … except that, I just looked, it is specified as nobody@example.com. In fact, all of the contacts for that network have the same email address. I think that alone warrants a strongly worded complaint.

  31. A 192 IP is a private IP, which means that address should lead directly to the offending computer on their network.

    File the complaint, the fact it was done at all on the taxpayers system needs to be followed up on.

  34. Nah 192.168 is a private netblock. 192.anything-else is just that. One time, in an industrial park, I was contracted to reprogram a router owned by a German conglomerate. Their network engineer(s?) had made this mistake with expensive consequences worldwide.

Thanks for the IT information-I’m sure I have been misled and I am pretty sure I know who the main culprit is, and wrote a letter to the PM and to Jason Kenney about it (along with general concerns about free speech and lawfare) and got no response. I believe this person is an untouchable federal employee with an aggressive, destructive, soul-crushing and bankrupting litigious streak. There are only so many battles one person can fight, so I prefer just to continue fighting on a different level and if I live rent-free in the heads of lefty f&ck heads, that’s good enough for me, for now.

    Obviously, the second vandal doesn’t know that Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete BACTERIUM Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. As a consequence Kate couldn’t have succumbed to this ‘virulent’ strain as it is clearly not a VIRUS. They didn’t pass biology class either!

  50. Buddy did something juvenile on a Gov of Can computer – was walked out of the building 45 minutes later, fired for cause. He was no cyber-dummy either, except he was stupid enough to do what he did. Point is – guaranteed they could tell you exactly who it was if they wanted to.
