  3. the Harper government was not exactly bubbling over with enthusiasm Tuesday in releasing its decision on the Northern Gateway pipeline project. No minister was on hand to make the announcement. The statement it put out did not formally approve Enbridge’s proposal, or even endorse last December’s report of the National Energy Board’s Joint Review Panel, which approved it subject to a list of 209 conditions.
    All the government would say is that it accepted the panel’s recommendation to impose the conditions, while lecturing “the proponent” that it had “more work to do” if it hoped to ever actually build the thing. Why, it didn’t even refer to itself as “the Harper government,” as is its custom, but rather attributed the decision to some faceless entity by the name of “the Government of Canada.”
    That could be read as the government edging away from a project it now sees as a political liability. Or it could just be doing what it should have done in the first place: stay out of it.
    But whatever one thinks of the Joint Review Panel or its report, or the government that commissioned it, that’s the process. It represents both the lawful and legitimate way of proceeding. Gateway’s opponents are fond of declaring, with ex cathedra certainty, that the pipeline “will never be built.” But they can’t possibly know this. Which raises the question: What do they mean? There is an absolutist hue to the rhetoric of some environmental and aboriginal activists that suggests an unwillingness to accept the pipeline under any circumstances.
    Governments are obliged to act within the law — to follow due process, to consult as required, etc. But so are their opponents. At some point, after all the conditions have been met and all the legal challenges have been exhausted, the critics will have to decide: Is there any process they will recognize as legitimate, if it does not give them the result they seek? Is there any point at which they concede? Or do they invoke the pernicious doctrine of “social licence” to justify violence and lawlessness?
    It is extremely unhelpful in this regard to hear the Opposition leader, Tom Mulcair, denounce the project as a “severe threat to social order” across Canada. No. I’m sorry, no. Lawful authority, acting lawfully, is not a threat to social order. It is social order.

    British university makes antibiotic resistance breakthrough
    Scientists at UEA’s Norwich Medical School believe that if drugs could be developed to target these molecules, then membranes could not form, leaving the bacteria cell exposed to the body’s own immune system.
    They also said that, because the drugs would not need to enter the bacteria itself, the bacteria may not be able to develop resistance, halting the evolution of superbugs.

    Between the BCTF and the exploding heads of the enviro/native/leftard movement, entertainment couldn’t be better.
    The teachers union continues to negotiate against itself, raising their demands with each passing day, getting more outrageous with each demand:
    $5000 signing bonus
    A 12% compounded wage increase over 4 years.
    $500 million in benefits, class composition increases, and teacher aid help.
    A unicorn in every pot.
    Then the environuts, who didn’t see anoutrage they couldn’t spit about. Loony tunes and drama, the nutters are out and about.
    I’m still waiting to see the 737 fly with solar panel power!

  10. DanBC – the walkway in my BC town is covered with graffiti written by the teachers. A fine example to the youth in their classes! I have read that BC graduates 1800 teachers per year and has jobs for 900. The obvious solution is to give the surplus 900 jobs and kick 900 sh1t disturbers out of the classroom since their interest doesn’t lie with the kids anyway.

  11. I will always stand behind the fluid meme that our FN/aboriginal/native/Indian/ Canadians are the stewards of the the earth.
    They are the ones that protect the pristine wilderness that the evil Harpo wants to destroy. The pipeline will go through the heart of the ‘ Sacred Spirit Great Kathmandu Bear Rainforest’. I don’t know the exact name.
    BUT, holy crap.
    Apparently one of these Great Sacred Spirit Katmandu Bears has been captured and the evil Calgary zoo is holding a contest to name it.
    What is worse, they captured it near Sparwood.
    I think that the Northern Gateway controversy drove it away.
    The controversy also made it a ‘nuisance’ bear that hangs around garbage dumps.

  12. I’ve tuned into NW a little to hear the aggrieved wailing to Sean Leslie and Vanilla Bill.
    Hoo-boy.
    There’s a lot of teachers either brain damaged, or read a little too much Lenin. There is a huge sense of self-aggrandizement amongst too many. They’ve achieved legendary status within their own minds.
    Now they’re starting their own food bank in Surrey….a food bank…..and one poor old teacher has to go home and live with ma and pa while they rent out their house…….I almost wept…..
    SInce the BCTF is intent on self-immolation (again), the government, I believe, is going to let them twist in the wind until late September, then legislate them back with the bare minimum, and it will be well deserved.
    The BCTF needs a thorough house cleaning of its demented members.

    I was too young (1951-58) to recall the construction of the Trans Canada pipeline, however I do recall my Dad and my uncles (who were all strong supporters of John Diefenbaker) talk about it. If I recall, there were two companies competing to complete the line that was going to branch off at Winnipeg. One line was to carry natural gas from Alberta to Ont. and Quebec while another was to carry gas for export to the USA. The Liberals under Louis St. Laurent were in power. The project was in limbo because of constant interference from the Liberals who demanded that Eastern Canada be placed ahead of US exports that would help finance the most difficult part of the pipeline through the Canadian Shield. Mile upon mile of the trenches had to be blasted with dynamite.
    It was the newly elected government of John Diefenbaker (1957) that pushed the construction so that the cities such as Montreal and Toronto could enjoy cheap natural gas while providing income for the prairies from US exports.
    I listened to Trudeau talk about Northern Gateway this PM. The more things change, the more they stay the same. As long as Ontario and Quebec are at the trough enjoying the benefits, the Liberals are happy. Just as soon as something good is about to happen here in the west, they try and stop it. It`s not the Northern Gateway that needs to be stopped–it`s Trudeau.

  19. If Tom doesn’t want this pipeline to be built, Alberta should put Quebec and the Feds on notice that the current equalization formula that transfers the financial benefits of the oil industry to social programs in Quebec will be disappearing with the pipeline.

  26. Another plausible scenario could be that the ‘quietness’ of the announcement is a positive political calculation.
    In other words, the CPC doesn’t want to appear to be celebrating to create the perception that they are not cheerleaders. If this perception stands, the CPC can then approach this as a scientific issue, not a political issue. From there, the CPC can then accuse the opposition of ‘politicizing’ the issue; and feed them a taste of their own medicine, and accuse them as being “anti-science”.
    It is my political analysis, which I would argue is much more sophisticated than the one in the article you link; that in fact this is a political winner for the CPC in 2015; hence the low-key announcement to avoid the impression of the CPC celebrating, or gloating. IMO, this is the election issue of 2015; as the opposition parties have telegraphed their position on this issue, leaving the CPC the full beneficiary of the pro-pipeline vote(no vote splitting on this issue). In other words, the CPC has turned the 2015 election into an economic debate; which is the single best road to the 39% of the vote they require. So long as we are not debating fancy-boys, dogs tied to the top of cars, or binders full of beetches; it’s the CPCs election to lose.

  34. The LINK does not work Kate….too bad, having been born there and hearing from some of my cousins over the years…it’s getting totally stupid. Geert Wilders is Hollands Ezra/Mark Steyn… But like here the Proggressives hold sway with their brand of social engineering, Multi cultural BS and just plain PC stupidity and have sanctioned him.
    I feel a battle coming and it will make the crusades pale in comparison…it will start in Europe (incl. the UK)…they’ve all got lots of experience.
