Somebody Get Me The Names Of These Board Members

CBC;

…two children were kicked out of the [Regina Optimist Dolphin Swim Club] after their mother sent a fax to the organization’s auditor, asking questions about the finances.
[A group of parents] say they’re worried the same thing will happen to their families if they speak out.
Andrea Mac Murray faxed the letter anonymously from a Regina shopping mall.
According to a letter obtained by CBC, club officials discovered she was the one who had sent it. Mac Murray says somebody accessed the surveillance video from the shopping mall.

  1. They all should pull their kids in solidarity and demand their $ back. After all, money talks.

  2. It may be useful for anyone living in Saskatchewan to ask their apparent sole major sponsor, the Saskatchewan Lotteries Foundation, for an accounting of where the money is spent.
You have to look around a bit to find the minor sponsors, Arena Aquatic Supplies – Team Aquatic Supplies, Capital Ford Lincoln, Rawlco Radio, MySask411.com, and Greystone Managed Investments.
It’s not possible to find out what percentage of funding is provided by parents without access to their financial pages, so it’s a guess as to how much a boycott by the parents would affect them… well I suppose if everyone walked out they’d be out of a club but…
Here’s one of them to ask, I’m including it here because you know, money’s kinda their thing…
Be polite, someone named “Cole Sear” has asked on the Dolphin’s Facebook page about the lack of financial statement for 22 months.
Obviously to an outsider that’s impossible to verify.

  3. “Earlier this week, the Dolphins board sent a letter to members reminding them of a club policy that requires they only say positive things about the club in public.”
Does having “Optimist” in your name give one license to be totalitarian? Did the board attend some “inclusive” feminist conference?
This is just way too absurd, but equally not surprising nowadays.

  4. “A senior Regina police officer is now on administrative leave and is being investigated in connection with the case.”
I want to know more about this. Namely who and why?

  5. I don’t know ‘who”, I don’t know why the police officer would do this, or if he has children as members of the swim club.
The police officer is alleged to have accessed the security camera video in order to find out who sent the offending request for information to the board. This is from the CBC writeup on this event.
Here is CJME’s news with a bit more information. Interesting too, as Rawlco is both owner of CJME and a sponsor of the Dolphins Swim Club.

  6. “Earlier this week, the Dolphins board sent a letter to members reminding them of a club policy that requires they only say positive things about the club in public.”
The kids are lucky they weren’t taken out by a SWAT team for violating the club “policy”.

  7. There must be at least one offended visible minority in the club of one kind or another, they should just take the Club administration to the Canadian Human Rights Commission to end their careers and empty their life savings.
    It’s simple really.

  8. Buried lede: “Connie Wagner said she pays thousands of dollars a year to keep her four children in swimming and she expects accountability.”
Yes, she probably should, but thousands of dollars for swimming?

  9. I’ve seen this kind of crap in a number of community organisations.
Hockey clubs, community clubs, soccer clubs, gymnastics clubs ad so on. All seem to attract people to board and executive positions who get so fat headed over their little bit of authority that they begin acting exactly like third world tin pot dictators.
The absolute worst case involves a non-profit health care facility that went from a respected and well run clinic to being a clown show of mismanagement and little fiefdoms run by self serving egomaniacs bent on perpetuating their existence and pursuing vindictive grudges against anyone who falls under their sway. This case led me to pursue a law suit against the executive and the board which led to the dismissal of executives and demotion of a group of managers.
    Don’t forget school boards either.

  10. Good luck getting any information from the executive. SWEEP refused to be accountable regarding how the millions of dollars collected from Saskatchewan citizens was spent. Members of SWEEP were only allowed copies ‘audited’ statements, even though the SWEEP bylaws stated members could review the books. According to the Corporations branch, that’s all members are allowed to see, that’s all the financial accountability is required. If any information is offered, take it. Fighting for it, you aren’t likely to see it.

  11. Thousands of dollars easily. I have a daughter swimming in Calgary. Fees alone are $2500 a year and on top of that there are meet fees and other commitments. We are probably in for about $5000 a year when all totalled up.
Swimming is not a cheap sport…and it runs almost year round at the competitive levels. Our daughter is in the pool 6 days a week, almost year round. Having said all that, we have had nothing but a great experience with our club in Calgary. With the money I spend on this, if the same shenanigans were going on I would be demanding accountability as well.

  12. I’d strongly recommend as well that people contact the Regina Chief of Police and tell him that the “senior officer in question” should be fired under the police services act, for conduct unbecoming.

  13. “‘Cause justice is the one thing you should always find; you gotta saddle up your boys, you gotta draw a hard line.”

  14. Perhaps the parents who received that letter will reply with one asking about a club policy on filing accounts and complying with Corporate Registry requirements.

  15. Is anyone really surprised that a cop abused his authority for personal gains?

  16. First, the Articles / By-laws of a lot of Societies have a clause that if the signatures of X number of members can be obtained on a petition they can call for a short term meeting (usually 2 or 3 weeks out), that would call for passing of a “Special Resolution. This Special Resolution would call for the Board to be dismissed and replaced with an interim Board while elections were arranged. If the required number of members attended this meeting and met the threshold of required votes the board could be gone in a month. The articles would have to be reviewed to ensure this option exists. If a member calls ahead to arrange a time to review the articles this request cannot be denied (at least in Alberta).
Second, to the Regulated professionals on the board (i.e. Accountants, Lawyers, etc.) sitting on a board that supposedly hasn’t been provided Financial information for 22 months you may wish to consider:
    – Are my actions consistent with my code of conduct that requires actions that are for the “public good”.
    – Should I continue to associate my name and credentials with this and what does continuing this association do to the image and reputation of my designation?
    – Does the board have liability insurance…because lawsuits for lack fiduciary responsibility are lurking.
Third, Kate, I have answered to a board, and been on the board of some Alberta Charities with budgets 1000X of this if you want further input leave me a note.

  17. Evidently, the Dolphins sent some of their executive staff to the White House for a crash course in managing organizations and keeping members in line.

  18. Keep the pressure on, get these idiots canned on any board. Thugs like this have no place in public life.
As for the cop(s), investigate properly and if guilty, jail.

  19. Find the link to the Liberal and or NDP parties. Reminiscent of ad scam here.
