  1. Victor Davis Hanson takes a look at – as Kate puts it – the opposite of diversity.
    Brief excerpt:

Do colleges routinely invite graduation speakers who are skeptical of man-made global warming, and have reservations about present abortion laws, gay marriage, or illegal immigration — if only for the sake of ensuring diverse views?

That’s what you call yer’ basic rhetorical question.

  2. Reagan campaigning for Senator Goldwater:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHuGvhelcGU
“Ronald Reagan A Time for Choosing, also known as The Speech, was a speech presented during the 1964 U.S. presidential election campaign by future president Ronald Reagan on behalf of Republican candidate Barry Goldwater.”
If this sounds like it could still apply today…
note: I can still hear my parents speaking in fear about what could have happened if the evil Goldwater “got in”.

  3. And of course, in response to Goldwater’s slogan of, “In your heart, you know he’s right”, the left, and their media pals responded, “Far right”. And Goldwater was toast.

  4. “I’ll have those niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years.” —Lyndon B. Johnson to two governors on Air Force One –
“These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days and that’s a problem for us since they’ve got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we’ve got to do something about this, we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference.”—LBJ

  5. Goldwater couldn’t hold a candle to Reagan. He was a true patriot, but no where near the qualities of Reagan. Unfortunately went left, or maybe just nuts in some important ways, such as opposing Christians in the Republican Party who opposed abortion, and opposed a ban on openly gay members of the armed services. He also pushed for marijuana legalization. I imagine he’d be a big Gary Johnson nut, today.

  6. So the news is reporting that Captain Stupid (Obama) is considering sanctions against the Ukraine. For the leaders of Ukraine, this is absolutely genius, as it only drives Ukraine deeper into the arms of Russia.

  7. I don’t know a whole lot about Goldwater; it just struck me as I was watching the ad how incredibly unlikely it is that we’ll ever see another Republican nominee uttering the same anti-government sentiments in a presidential campaign ad — he’d be drummed out of the nomination process early on by the RINO’s.
These days it’s all about whose votes you can buy — “for (X) we’ll do this, for (Y) we promise to…”
    It’s too bad.

  8. In 1968, Goldwater was my second choice for president after George Wallace. That must have been the start of my choosing a path that few other people do. One has to wonder how different the US would be now if Goldwater had been elected back then instead of the socialist LBJ.

  9. Seems that situation in Ukraine is going steadily towards a potential civil war. 70 people shot dead today and one wonders when the nationalists will start using the guns they seized from the armories they took over in Lviv and other western Ukrainian cities.

What I find striking is how Ukrainian nationalists are portrayed as somehow being “fascist”. My father was a militant Ukrainian nationalist when the part of western Ukraine he lived in was occupied by Poland until 1939. Somehow it seems that “self-determination” is just for those groups which are the darlings of statists whereas Ukrainians wanting self-determination doesn’t fit the blueprint of statists.

  10. Agree.
“My father was a militant Ukrainian nationalist when the part of western Ukraine he lived in was occupied by Poland until 1939.” Must be a story there as to how he got to Canada.
We stayed in a hotel at the bottom of European Square in 2008. This is a nice part of the central area of Kiev, and there is a nice wide park like boulevard street that ends there.

“Michael Mann Faces Bankruptcy as his Courtroom Climate Capers Collapse”
“Massive counterclaims, in excess of $10 million, have just been filed against climate scientist Michael Mann after lawyers affirmed that the former golden boy of global warming alarmism had sensationally failed in his exasperating three-year bid to sue skeptic Canadian climatologist, Tim Ball. Door now wide open for criminal investigation into Climategate conspiracy.
Buoyed by Dr Ball’s successes, journalist and free-speech defender, Mark Steyn has promptly decided to likewise countersue Michael Mann for $10 million in response to a similar SLAPP suit filed by the litigious professor from Penn. State University against not just Steyn, but also the National Review, the Competitive Enterprise Institute and Rand Simberg. Ball’s countersuit against Mann seeks “exemplary and punitive damages”.”

  14. COMMIE RATS
We need to bring that term back into common use. People like Goldwater were maligned for making generalized statements about the left. He saw the left as a monolith. The left responded by lumping him with the John Birch Society. They called him a far-right war-monger. Few called him a Nazi, but the implication was there.
In fact the Nazis were totalitarian socialists who rejected communism because Hitler did not want to kow-tow to Stalin. Nazi means national socialist. Labeling the Nazis as right-wing was an enormous propaganda victory for the left.
The American extreme right are not big-government Nazis, they are tiny-government libertarians. They want to eliminate all US federal activities that are not explicitly in the Constitution. Thus, the ‘extreme right’ espouses the same values as Washington, Jefferson, Hancock, and the other framers of the Constitution.
Goldwater was right-of center. His goal in Washington was to dismantle and simplify laws, not make more of them.
By the way the John Birch Society has 2 pretty good websites. They are quite moderate.
The goal of the left is to undermine, complicate, and stymie Canadian and American freedom and prosperity any way they can. They call it ‘social justice’ but the same values are expressed in the Communist Manifesto. They have been at for my whole lifetime, and they won’t stop unless we stop them.
Calling the left COMMIE RATS seems OK to me.
