Lord Monckton invites ‘Chazza’ to spar over ‘unroyal’ global-warming remark
” Option 1. Your Royal Highness will renounce the Throne forthwith and for aye. Those remarks were rankly party-political and were calculated to offend those who still believe, as Your Royal Highness plainly does not, that the United Kingdom should be and remain a free country, where any subject of Her Majesty may study science and economics, may draw his conclusions from his research and may publish the results, however uncongenial the results may be.”

Mon Dieu EBD–you have good taste. An interesting observation. At 1:44 and 10:22, the French and other foreign flags are transparent. That would mean they were most likely made of nylon. The first nylon flags I recall were the Maple Leaf flags that we got from the Liberal Party of Canada in 1968.

Plainzdrifter on February 5, 2014 11:53 PM – the aircraft with no nosewheel was not a Constellation, it is a Languedoc, a French design. The first aircraft in the video is a genuine Connie though! Do an image search on Google using “Languedoc” and “avion”

“The heaviest snowstorm in five decades has blanketed provinces in northern Iran, cutting power supplies and trapping villagers, Iranian media reported Monday.
The storm is “unprecedented for the past 50 years, with two metres (almost seven feet) of snow falling since Friday,” a Mazandaran provincial official said, quoted by the media.”

I like to keep and eye on the UK school system because all bad ideas seem to be born there and are then picked up by other anglophone countries. Here’s two that appeared recently:
1)A couple who took their children out of school so they could have their first family holiday in five years risk being jailed after refusing to pay fines introduced under controversial new laws…
…Kay Burford, attendance support team leader for Telford & Wrekin Council said the new legislation is clear and any time off is disruptive to a child’s education. She said: ‘Our policy supports new legislation which makes it clear that head teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.‘Leave in term-time which results in significant absence from school is disruptive to the child’s education and has a detrimental impact on attainment.

2) A six year-old boy who was suspended from his school after he took a bag of Mini Cheddars in his packed lunch has now been expelled…
…The school has insisted a pupil was not excluded ‘for just having Mini Cheddars in their lunchbox’ but because there had been a ‘persistent and deliberate breach of school policy, such as bringing in crisps, biscuits, sausage rolls, mini sausages, scotch eggs and similar’. Riley’s dad, Tom Pearson, said he was ‘devastated’ that the school had not only deprived Riley of his schooling but also his younger brother who attends its pre-school.

One comment after the second story mockingly said that perhaps parents should intentionally send kids to school with forbidden snacks in defiance of the ‘healthy eating’ rule in order to get suspended and thereby getting around the fines for the ‘no family vacation’ rule. Another asked if the headmaster from the ‘healthy eating’ school should get fined or thrown in jail for disrupting the children’s education for suspending/expelling them from school for food violations.
Obviously, this isn’t about education, or vacations or healthy eating. It is a blatant power play that displaces the parent’s authority and gives parental decision-making to the school system. I was surprised how passive many parents seem. Do they not understand that the school system should work for them, that they should not be servants to the teachers and bureaucratic rules designed to ‘nudge’ them into compliance.
Funny how this only seems to be news now.

Sochi Olympics videos of showers:
…
“[Mr. Kozak said], ‘We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day,’ he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. ‘We’re doing a tour of the media center,’ the aide said.”

My guess is that the guests were hoping for hot water to actually be reaching their room by the end of the day, or now that they’ve received hot water, they thought they’d just keep it flowing. I work with this sort of thing, both actually make more sense than leaving the hot water off.

This is the best news I’ve heard since I can’t remember when!!!!
AWESOME!!!
Yes, those two stories about British educational attitudes contradict one another. The only thing that’s consistent is the authorities’ willingness to push people around.
Whenever you hear a leftist talking about people as “citizens” rather than “consumers”, you can bet he means that a “citizen” is a person who is willing to let the authorities push him around like this. A “consumer” demands something of value in return for spending his money; a “citizen” is supposed to take what he gets from the state and be glad to get it.
The only rational solution is to privatize education from top to bottom. The first step is a voucher system.
