  1. A comparison I would like to see: Active mining footprint compared to total footprint of all garbage dumps in the USA.

  2. Back when the NDP were doing their best to drive the mining industry out of BC, a statistic that was floating around was that all the mining sites past and present totaled a disturbed area less than that of the Coquihalla highway.
The Oil sands projects are simply clean-up of the largest oil spill on the planet. Anyone opposed should not be allowed to purchase gasoline as that would make them f…..g hypocrites.

  3. How about the land permanently inundated by hydro reservoirs like James bay and Churchill falls.
    James Bay 11,000 sq km
    Churchill falls 5700 sq km.
Unless they issued all the bears and Caribou life jackets there are a lot fewer if them now than before the dams and dikes were built…

  4. I was remediating a site in central Alberta on its third year watching the county oil the road half a mile away
Spraying hundreds of gallons of dark crude. I was remediating something like a light green 40 API oil

  5. And, hopefully the Site C Dam will add to the cleanest energy known to man – though many friends and family living in Peace River Block say it will only be sold to the behemoth to our south. Still, it will always be ours. The farmers there say they aren’t interested in selling out, but I suspect if the money is right they will do so gladly.

  6. And what is the area of Toronto? Montreal? Vancouver? How big is their footprint? How much waste do they create every year

  7. Don’t forget that mining doesn’t bring new species of flora and fauna that compete with the normal ecology around it, while cities regularly do. Or that mines are recovered after an area is depleted. How many cities have you ever seen that have been recovered? I don’t mean mining towns (like Cassiar), but cities. An example of a city that could use recovery to a natural status is Detroit

  8. To my mind, far and away the biggest problem with the oilsands is how politicians will squander the wealth extracted from it.

  9. Foobert….when you say the total footprint of all the garbage dumps in the USA, are you including Detroit?

  10. Meanwhile, the Caniapiscau Reservoir, part of the James Bay Project in Quebec covers an area of 4,300 square km. Causes earthquakes and has completely screwed up the natural flow of water in Quebec. But hey….that’s in Quebec.
