Several points to bear in mind. There’s lots of different kinds of nuclear R&D. That in and of itself is not the problem; it’s the degree to which these are conducted without scrutiny which poses the problem. If there’s no scrutiny, we have no way of knowing whether Iran is violating its commitments or not.
Second, the agreement even from what US officials describe represents a significant climbdown (or surrender if you will) by the US. As a signatory to NPT, Iran was not supposed to have any projects. That they are being allowed to continue the existing ones represents a weakening of the regime.
Third, the IAEA is on record as stating that the agreement does not provide them nearly enough access to Iran’s facilities.
The real problem the Americans have now is people like Lance doubting what they said. If Sec. State John F-in’ Kerry comes out and says “We have a deal!”, and we’re all sitting here thinking “doubt it”, imagine what the French are saying.
Just like the US had ‘back door negotiations’ with Iran all along over the last year; with concomitant plausible deniability.
Furthermore, Ben Ghazi is just a pleasant Al-Qaeda dude who thinks Assad should be given the bum’s rush.
The 30 pager is no doubt an alpha level framework of a putative further agreement…
Thus far we have seen nothing resembling IAEA ‘transparency’; alternately, we have been offered some political fig leaves for all parties concerned…

There’s no international scrutiny, oversight or access to Israel’s nukes.
In fact Israel, North Korea and Sudan are the rogue nations who have NOT signed the NPT (Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty).
As evidenced by this agreement, the world is clearly fed up with Israel’s aggression.
When do they impeach this guy??? What does it take for this piece of crap to do that rises to the level of impeachment??
So why am I not even faintly worried the Israelis will nuke somebody some afternoon for no particular reason?
The Chicoms, North Koreans and particularly the Iranians are definitely liable to do something like that. The Pakistanis have -already- lit off a nuke just to show they can, as has India. Therm I worry about. Israel, no.
Furthermore, if you were running Israel would -you- let a bunch of UN inspectors run around in your arsenal? I think not.

If you’re going to debate with me you’d best get your facts straight. North Korea signed NPT decades ago. The fuss occurred precisely because NK in the late 1990s booted out the IAEA inspectors, denying them access to facilities and records which NK had pledged to provide.
Israel, India and Pakistan never signed NPT. There is no law that prevents nations from developing nuclear weapons entirely on their own. There is an international treaty in place called the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT). If you never sign it you can hardly be found guilty of violating it. The price you pay for not ratifying NPT is that no other nuclear technology nation will trade nuclear technology with you.
Iran like NK signed and ratified NPT. Like NK, it attempted to cheat on its commitment by clandestinely establishing a nuclear weapons program. And it too is being held to account for lying about its technology and intentions. Iraq tried to do the same thing under Saddam Hussein, and the Israeli air force blew the Iraqi Osirak reactor into little tiny pieces in 1982.
What you don’t seem to understand is that Israel, India and Pakistan never lied about anything. They accepted isolation as the consequence of their actions, went ahead and built their nuclear weapons capability anyway.
Phantom, actually the Pakistanis lit off five tests. However, I understand the results were that in at least three of them the results were distinctly sub-optimal.
Israel never needs to have IAEA inspectors running around. It never signed and ratified NPT, while NK and Iran did.
Let’s not be naive. Governments lie, cheat, and steal – it is in their nature to do so. Power corrupts and absolute
power corrupts absolutely. Read English history to see how a really honest, straightforward country – one of
the best – lies, betrays, and deceives. A good place to start is with Wikipedia on the Yalta Conference,
where Stalin asked Roosevelt and Churchill for them to betray wartime allies – and they did.
One of my uncles served in the RN during WWII on destroyer
escort duty up to Murmansk. Toward the end of the war they ferried Polish and Russian ex-combatants around –
not much doing with the Germans at that point. On one trip they were taking White Russians back to Murmansk.
My uncle couldn’t understand why the Russians weren’t happy to be going home. The night after the White
Russians were landed in Murmansk, the men on board my uncle’s destroyer heard machine guns and rifle fire
all night – they couldn’t understand why – the nearest Germans were a thousand miles away.
Etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum.
Lying was once regarded as an essential part of statecraft, and mental reservation as the most sophisticated form.
When the head of government is a pathological liar and his foreign secretary is a fantasist looking to make a
reputation in foreign affairs any truthful statements that emerge will be purely accidental.
Sadly the result of all this Neville Chamberlin style idiocy may be a quarter billion people incinerated in an hour or so. Depending on how much of the Israeli AF gets off the ground and whether those F-22’s we deployed to Quatar really try to shoot them down.
Why would you think it would ever come to that? Do you seriously imagine that Israel is going to put its safety on the line based on something Obama and Kerry negotiated? If you do, then I have at least several bridges to sell you.
Israel isn’t going to allow Iran to have a deployable nuclear weapon any more than they allowed Iraq to have the same in 1982. There are some facts in life which are simply non-negotiable.

Personally I can’t understand Israel. If Canada were in the same situation, we’d have nuked the sonsab1tch3s thirty years ago.
If you like this treaty, you can keep it. This government lies. I may be overly cynical, but I’m seldom surprised.
