Probably the only reserve where this is happening, right?
Absolutely,if you can’t trust First Nations politicians…..
And I’ll bet Deloitte will find the “paper trail” is not adequate to discover exactly where the money went or to whom it went.
I see Idle No More is back, protesting government’s plan to reform FN education programs. I suppose they’re afraid a new program might not be as sensitive to Native culture as those gentle people require.
All the Fortune 500 companies hire based on degrees in FN Studies. Everybody knows that.
At least an audit was done. It would be very interesting to see this happen to Thesa Spence or the FSIN.
I thought that band audits were mandated and that results would start coming out for all bands in 2014?
I filed for my German aboriginal status some time ago but have not received a reply. I guess Canada Post doesn’t have delivery to Germany anymore.
Indian Affairs should have been done away with years ago. IMO the main reason it still exists are the public servants and band leaders who greatly profit from its existence. Seriously, what role models do native youth focus on?
Waste, mismanagement and fraud will probably always be a fact of life on most reserves. No politician has the gonads to speak out about these abuses. No law authority has the intestinal fortitude to pursue charges against the guilty. And any hope of tossing the chief and council is wishful thinking due to an ongoing process of intimidation and bribery. When it comes right down to it, can one really blame the innocent reserve residents who realize that they are being hosed and recognize theft, nepotism and gross mismanagement when they see it but are afraid to speak out? I don’t know if I would have the courage to be the voice of dissent knowing full well that a failed coup would have disastrous consequences now and far into the future.
The only solution appears to be the election of a competent and honest chief and council who won’t be afraid to tackle the problems and won’t succumb to the temptation to dive into the cookie jar. Wishful thinking?
I have driven through the halfway reserve for years and have watched the place sloowwwwly improve. I ran into the chief several years ago with his recreational equipment which i would estimate at 200 k.

“Probably the only reserve where this is happening, right?”
No, actually there’s a reserve up in Canada they call Quebec (Que-e-beck), where it’s much, much bigger.
So … the story goes like this … back when the first Indian Casinos were being set up in KayBec there was a bunch of bright young guys from the rez who made all the deals come together.
A friend of mine was hired as the marketing lead for the project and was at the big celebrity opening event.
He noticed that there were NO “aboriginals” serving or working games. He also noticed that the only indians there were the group of young entrepreneurs and a few jewelery loaded guys dressed in the usual western sort of stuff. So, my buddy asks the guy about the makeup of the staff and crowd. The response? Basically the casino developer laughed in his face about hiring natives to work. Because as far as he was concerned natives do not work. They also were not invited to the opening showcase because it was not for them but rather for the investors and the insiders who included the sleazy urban cowboy types who were sucking the free booze and mauling the “Hostesses”. The conversation was frank and went on to cover a lot of the politically sensitive stuff that non-indians are supposed to be uncomfortable about. Not so for these guys. Key points made by the casino guys included their opinion that they owed nothing back to the residents who they had no use for other than to stand around for optics when needed and that nothing was going to change until the white folks stopped giving money to them. If you give us money we will take it.
You can be sure that none of those guys paid any taxes and gave nothing back to the rez.
Exactly what I was going to say. The more incompetent and wasteful Quebec’s govt is, the more billion$ they get from the ROC.
And they want more money for education?
Funny, and another reserve is being created in Ontario.
Gee pill, I’d be -fascinated- to see the numbers you based that little comment on. I think your neuron is getting overheated again. Maybe you should go soak your head, cool the poor thing off.
Um Phil, maybe you should read this:

Yes, farmers receive subsidies but they not only contribute to the economy by providing jobs and wealth, they put food on your table. On the other hand, the money pouring into the reserves seems to have no beneficial effect. We still have rampant poverty on the reservations and lots of fancy toys for the band leaders.
Phil is just doing his socialist duty by trying to change the topic. The more he can goad people into responding to his rhetoric and vitriol the less we discuss the matter a hand.
Heh, poor little socialist Phil still hasn’t commented on why he takes welfare from farmers for the education of him and his git.

Zactly.
The way I see it, economic downturns, solar flares, pandemics, Red Dawn….. name your poison:
Indian Reserves = 0
Quebec Reserve = 0
Liberal Inner city Reserves = -0
Subsidized Farmers = food
Phil was obviously once raped by someone who pretended to be a farmer, it’s sad but that happens in a big bad world like this from time to time.
Last I read the Dept. of Indian Affairs eats up slightly more than $10 billion per year from the federal budget. I am sure there are huge ancillary monies spent from other federal departments as well as provincial social services.
The idea that a democratic country would single out citizens by race and treat them differently is incomprehensible. In fact in Canada that worked so well that the practice was extended to Quebeckers and Metis as well. Whether the process is a gravy train or not is dependent on where on the train you are sitting. I can guarantee that the ‘care providers’ make a very good living maintaining this internal apartheid.

“I get get raped by deadbeat plow jockeys every payday”
So don’t work in a bathhouse.
I eat well, even grow some of my own food for fun, know a few farmers and can say that they work hard and have much sh*itty toys than I do, or could well afford.
At the end of the day, if all hell ever breaks loose I have plenty of places to bug out and help guard perimeters.
I really do appreciate your support of my “Sh*t Hit the Fan” anti-liberal zombie retreats though. Just don’t walk up that 1/4 mile driveway without a tank.

You don’t know what I know, so I’m afraid that embarrassingly you’re the true idiot my friend.
But blather on, your entertainment value to SDA rivals LAS. It’s a great springboard of ideas and concepts at your expense that may never have been made otherwise. Appreciated.
