  7. I have a number of American friends who visit me in Vancouver. Whenever they do, I warn that more than a few Canadians do not like Americans. If you confront one of our countrymen/women about their feelings, they will always couch their feelings in terms of “American policies” but it’s very clear what their real feelings are.
    I just heard a guy, some friend of one of my neighbours, say the following to her: “One good thing that came out of the Boston bombings was that regular white Americans finally learned what blacks have to put up with every day of their lives. And who cares anyhow, only 3 people were killed.”
    100% chance that this guy votes NDP or Green or Liberal. Another 100% chance that he thinks of himself as “progressive” and “highly intelligent”.

  8. Perhaps she feels she’s out of her league. If she keeps her mouth shut the Chinese first lady might think she’s stupid, but if she starts to talk it might well be confirmed. From what I’ve read, Peng Liyuan is very intelligent.

  12. I’ve run into that kind of thing a lot here in Victoria too. They think it’s perfectly socially acceptable to these people to say really disgusting and prejudiced things about Americans. Is this a national deal or is it only a west coast thing? Anyone care to comment?

  18. Just learned that the Vancouver Sun & Province will reduce their staff by 90 people on June 14th. This is being done by generous packages, offering those taking it over 1 year of wages & benefits. In fact, when the company saw how many people were willing to take the packages, they had to stop offering them.

  19. In June 2005 I stood on the beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer‎ on a sunny day with not a cloud in the sky nor a ripple in the channel. It was impossible to imagine the fear, the noise, the horrors that happened on June 6, 1944.
    Those who came home were burdened with nightmares and, as with the men who returned after WWI, no one understood PTSD. The men just had to get on with their lives, but they and their families knew the suffering of those who’d seen battle. My brother was delivering newspapers one day and heard dreadful screaming coming from a house as he walked up to the door. The woman explained to him it was her son having a nightmare. She was a widow and had two sons in the Army and one in the Navy.
    I pray God has granted each and every one who returned home broken in spirit His peace and that all who fought for us will live with Him for eternity.

    ‘Sounds to me like a community-organizer gig. One hundred employees and some volunteers is about the size of organization Miller might be capable of managing. He says that environmental issues are the greatest challenge of our generation.
    I wish he’d treated Toronto’s “environmental issues” with more respect. He left Toronto an absolute disaster zone, so it’s a bit rich that he’s bleating on about environmental “challenges.” Toronto’s infrastructure challenges are largely due to his ineptitude as TO’s mayor.

    Apparently, abortions for “defenseless women” — no mention of defenseless babies — and going to jail was Morgentaler’s way to honour his father of whom he was ashamed because his father had gone to prison for opposing the Nazis.
    It appears that Morgentaler’s priorities were skewed right from the start.

  27. Utah,Omaha,Gold,Juno,Sword. Names very few know. All to take a town known as Caen and the road leading to Berlin. Both my grandfathers saw,fought,and “survived” that hell on earth. To this day,pray for those who came back, and pray for us who are alive today,to remember those who went before us.
    We lost a generation of kids,on both sides. As gramps used to say,the heroes remain on the beaches,the unlucky carry on. And have we learned anything??

Tyranny is incremental, and it depends on people accustoming themselves to each crank of the ratchet. “The new normal” can only work if it seems as if life IS going on as normal. When people are being deafened by screams and have to keep stepping around puddles of blood on the sidewalk, it’s harder and harder for them to convince themselves that all is well and nothing has changed.
    And another possible benefit is that the government muscle will start feeling heat personally. It may not be, like Solzhenitsyn said, that they’ll leave for work every morning wondering if they’ll make it alive through the day. But they’ll start to experience ostracism and shocked revulsion even in their private lives. “Did you SEE what he did to that poor old lady?” “Wasn’t that your dad on the video kicking that priest in the knee when dragging him out of his church?” “How can you live with a man who beats up a mother in front of her own children?” When it gets to the point that the police have to wear balaclavas to do the dirty jobs the government keeps handing them, we might see some breaking ranks.”

  34. 11:15 AM, maz2, the Bolsheviks did that and lived with kicking people in front of their children, and hauling them off to labour camps or mass graves for seventy years. Hitler did it for twelve years, and the Chicoms have done it for seventy-five years. There are other examples.
    They tell themselves they are doing the people a favour by getting rid of “the enemies of the people”. The US IRS has no problem targeting groups, or the government looking at everyone’s emails as they are protecting the people from “the enemies of the people” (anybody on the right).

  36. Sorry, I put it in one of the “not for publication” bookmarks I use for stuff I forward to friends, so I didn’t add an “h/t” to it. And then I forgot where it came from.
    You know, a friend of my neighbour’s friend’s niece’s boyfriends said his uncle used to tell him, “Son, never forget where you came from.” It’s not really relevant here, I’m just typing at this point.
    I think the women do detest each other, albeit the weather-woman is past caring at this point. I get the impression that she wins the war on a daily basis.
