  1. Great pics of London.Only real diff I could see 87 years later, was alot more non-white faces.

  2. Dennis Miller:

“…when you tap an AP reporter’s phone line and find out how much they’re not getting laid, that’ll get the press P.O.’d. The rest of this is all smoke and mirrors. They don’t care about Benghazi. They don’t care about the IRS. They’ll feign a little indignation, but nobody’s going to go after this guy on that. To think he was tapping reporter’s phones — what a perfect symbiosis that they’re such ass-kissers and he’s someone who really just looks them in the eye and says ‘kiss my ass.’ It is beautiful, it is beautiful that they met each other on this planet.”

  3. Lovely stuff. My wife and I in live in Sault Ste Marie. Both from London. She noticed the tall and imposing officers of the law, as her father was a policeman. Seemed so much more room for people then, except at Petticoat Lane.
Hard times for many English people as the year before the film, the General Strike took place. Yet everyone seemed well dressed. I caught a couple of elegant young women and some things have not changed (thank goodness). So obviously aware of their looks and smart outfits.

  4. Love this:
“Research published Wednesday in Psychological Science finds that men with strong upper-bodies tend to be more opposed to economic redistribution than their weak-armed counterparts…”
Yes. And they’re more likely to have been weaned, and to cut their own meat at the dinner table.

  5. Its rather fitting that I should run into these pics of London today as it is the 60th anniversary of my having come to Canada from London (May 16th 1953).
My dad landed in Toronto with his wife and four young children and about $200 dollars to his name.
The first years were tough, but my dad was a hard worker and we managed without any gov’t handouts. Looking back, we’ve done alright and looking at where Britain is today, I can only feel that my folks made a good choice.
Interesting enough, my dad also died on this very same day back in the 90’s.
    Thanks EBD

  6. What the hell kind of ten-year-olds think or care about this kind of thing? Oh, right, the ones with stupid hyper-political parents and teachers. Forget I asked.

  7. Re: Color video.
That was fun!! The Brits had color motion film in the 20`s and TV in the 30`s.
    Google John L. Baird.

  8. Another interesting development. From WND Press:
Seven people from Pakistan, Singapore and Saudi Arabia – the country of 15 of the 19 Sept. 11 hijackers – were caught trespassing in the middle of the night at a reservoir from which Boston draws its drinking water.
…the five men and two women said they were chemical engineers and were in the area because of “their education and career interests.”
As everyone remembers Ahmed Abassi studying chemical engineering in Que. City was arrested for planning to kill as many as 100,000 people by contaminating the air or water supply in a major U.S. city.

  9. Proof that global warming is dead. Twelve years ago we were told AGW was undeniable because the Nenana River breakup was trending to earlier dates in the year.
The trend has reversed since then and now the Nenana is still ice covered; 1964 is the only year with such a late breakup in a century of record keeping.

  11. “Never do a Liberal a favour”
“TORONTO – So that’s the thanks a guy gets for turning around the mess called the OLG?
“I was fired,” Paul Godfrey said with a grin Thursday night after being dismissed by Premier Kathleen Wynne and her Finance Minister Charles Sousa.
And he wasn’t just fired but there was an attempt to embarrass him.
Word of this shiv in his back came out through anonymous sources Monday in a story in the Globe and Mail.
“All she had to do was make a phone call and say you are not my guy,” Godfrey said. “That’s her prerogative as premier.”
Instead, he was hung out to dry like a nameless, faceless, powerless pawn.”

Blaming political opponents for the shortfall, as it does for other shortages, the embattled socialist government says it will import 50 million rolls to boost supplies.”

  15. Read the article you linked – is that what passes for journalism, these days?
Here’s how they wrap up the article:
In response to that post, a commenter identified as ‘Rinse’ wrote that he knew of someone who had done crack cocaine with Ford.
“A friend of mine, her mother is a serious drug addict. Rob Ford regularly goes over to her house to smoke crack,” the individual wrote.

That’s your wrap-up? An anonymous comment from some person on the internet? I’m suddenly flashing to that State Farm commercial… “everything on the Internet is true!”. In which case I’d better start stockpiling ammo (if I can find any) and tinfoil for when the Bilderberg Freemason Illuminati alien-human hybrid mind-controlling vat-cloned CIA agents attack.

  17. So a few drug addicts wanted some American who fancies himself a journalist to believe that a fat white fella they have a cellphone video of, and he apparently smoking crack, must be the mayor of Toronto, because he’s obviously the only fat white fella in all of Toronto, and wanted to charge the stupid Yank six figures for the video, so they could pay back their dealers and avoid becoming tomorrow’s headline about aspiring rappers who were starting to turn their lives around.
Look. If this video were real, we’d have never heard about it. They’d have already shopped it to Ford himself, and (he being a drug addict in this universe, and in danger of prosecution if they went to the papers) he’d almost certainly have paid several times what the papers could hope to offer.
As it is, the fact that the fella in the video just had to throw in a smart remark about the Young Pretender is evidence that the Young Pretender and his cronies are behind this. God knows they have enough mob connections to make it look convincing.
Here’s what I think—I’m glad to hear of the video allegations, because that means nobody needs to take Gawker seriously ever again.

  18. Phil – By all means don’t mention Liberal senator Mac Harb’s phony expense claims. Harper’s senate appointments have been dismal letdowns but then again, he promised us elected senators. More disappointment – but only to those who falsely believe that modern partisan politics can ever be an ethical game populated with people of integrity. Never has been. Modern politics in the devolving western democracies are an amalgamation of kleptocratic impulse, situational ethics and grey morality combines with little oversight, too much authority and limited liability. All a reasoned person can do in this state of affairs is chose the lesser of many evils and hope it doesn’t fail public morality thresholds too greatly.
But when you come here dumping out this odious partisan narrative about your guy/group is faultless – all others are scum narrative and insulting people you don’t know or understand, it’s evident that radical partisanism has clouded your reality, morality and reason. Perhaps in time you will learn that being rabidly partisan is a mental illness, akin to obsessive compulsive neurosis, which clouds reason and empathy. But until you experience that cathartic moment, get the hell out of here and spread your partisan compost in more intellectually barren fields – like the CBC or LPC echo chambers.

“Obama lands in media storm after rain incident”
“US president asks Marines to shield him and Turkey’s Erdogan from rain, inadvertently breaches Marine Corp Manual”
“The incident occurred on Thursday, in a joint press conference by the two leaders in the White House’s Rose Garden when a light rain started to fall.
“I am going to go ahead and ask folks, why don’t we get a couple of marines – they’re going to look good next to us,” Obama said. “I’ve got a change of suits, but I don’t know about our prime minister.”
The president, who is also the US Armed Forces’ commander-in-chief, was apparently unaware that his request was a breach of protocol, and two Marines in full dress uniform answered his request and hurried to his side holding umbrellas.”

  21. An unidentified reporter or reporters at CTV News, whose TV network has enjoyed mandatory coast-to-coast carriage (guaranteed placement) on basic cable for years now, uses an “unidentified source” as the sole basis of a story alleging that Mike Duffy attempted to influence the CRTC’s decision about “the right-leaning” Sun Media’s application to be granted mandatory carriage.
The insider quote Duffy as saying…
The unidentified CTV reporter or reporters also report on Liberal MP Ralph Goodale’s indignation with Duffy — or, more accurately, report on the Liberal MP’s indignation with the unidentified source’s alleged description of Mike Duffy’s alleged behaviour.

  22. Krikey! Slater, for a minute there I thought you were Raymond bleeding Chandler. (I’m re-reading a bunch of this stuff.)
