Section 13 Repeal ‘not a done deal’

Catholic Register;

Senator Douglas Finley warns the passage of Bill C-304 to eliminate the anti-free speech Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act is “not a done deal.”
Conservative MP Brian Storseth’s private member’s bill to eliminate the vaguely worded Section 13 clause that deems communication “likely” to expose a protected group to hatred or contempt discrimination under the act passed the House of Commons last June. Finley, the Conservative senator who is shepherding the bill’s passage through the Senate, said many pundits assumed the fight had been won then, leaving “a false impression.” […]
Finley said he “would really like to see the passion warm up again, especially among those who are passionate against Section 13.”
Opponents of Bill C-304 “are rallying their side,” he said. “They know the battle’s not over with.”

  1. ideas that suppress freedom never really go away, they just hide in corners for another chance to sneak in the back door.

  2. Exactly!
How about Finley providing us with the contact information for any “conservative” senators who might be wavering…

  3. No one will defend fascistic unjust law like a “progressive” true believer. Never, ever underestimate their capacity for injustice if it offers a placebo to a non-existent problem.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” – C.S. Lewis

  4. I suspect most of Harper’s senators are as Conservative as Mike Duffy or Pamela Wallin – well hidden. There are a lot of Joe Clark/Kim Campbell Conservatives who really don’t understand the meaning of modern conservatism which is old liberalism, centering on fear of big government. The goose-steppers are the socialists, actually they always were.

  5. Fine.
    Once more into the breach.
This issue was why I have become politically active in the last decade.
But who do we write to? These scumbag senators are unelected.
Where to make our impact in this discussion??

  6. Good question Pete. It would be nice to have a list of the socialists in disguise.
Occam, that is one of my favourite quotes. I have it on the wall.
Scar, that is true. Many of them are CINOs.

  7. Of course it’s not over, did we expect these people to just give up?
What I’d like to do here is take every one of these supposedly Conservative senators who are resisting the repeal of Section 13, as well as every Liberal likewise, and MAKE THEM FAMOUS. Names and faces, plus quotations, as they explain why we need an unelected unaccountable extra-judicial kangaroo court in this country to prosecute crime think.
Because that is what the Internet is for. Making guys famous for doing bad things.

  8. Done!
    Dear Senator Finley,
I just finished reading an article in The Catholic Register that Conservative MP Brian Storseth’s private member’s bill to eliminate Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act may be facing some difficulty in the Senate. I was quite surprised and angry to learn that several Conservative Senators have spoken out against the bill.
Please provide me with the names of those dissenting Senators so that I may contact them and explain why Canada – a country that presents itself on the world stage as the paragon of democracies – would be hypocritical if it failed to repeal this regressive law that makes a mockery of one of the Free World’s oldest liberties: free speech.

  9. Has anyone considered the possibility that Senator Finley, one of the CPC’s major bag-men, is trying to milk every last dollar from those who oppose the kangaroo courts of the HRC? They played the Wheat Board for as long as they could, as well as the long-gun registry. The current government can be counted on in many area to do the right thing but only when they sense that their supporters realize that they are crying “Wolf!” and decide that it will take a new issue to persuade them to write a cheque.

  10. More likely that the Senators are acutely aware that whatever public respect they did have, recently took a nose-dive.
So, this is Senator Finley’s way of saying, “Look at me! I’m a Senator, and I’m working!”
