Most schmaltzy, feel-good movies have happy endings so carefully and formulaically constructed that even a po-faced, tone-deaf viewer who missed the first hour will experience the correct emotions right on cue — all it really takes is the right music, and some Big-Ending Faces.
The comments are open, as always, for your Reader Tips.

The best big-picture analysis of the current US electoral situation that I’ve read: David Horowitz’s How Republicans Can Win.
Read the whole thing. Highly recommended.

Global Worming….
priceless.
I’ve been using earthworms to eat my compost and make great potting soil, but I had no idea they were making it warmer too. Yet another benefit of vermiculture.
Ben Shapiro for an hour. He discusses his book “Bullies” and spends most of the talk describing his interview with Piers Morgan.

I’m no great fan of Donald Trump, but the enemy of Bill Maher (who really should have seen this coming; he’s an idiot as well as a painfully unfunny misogynist camel-faced creep; also, his own hair looks like he emptied a bottle of canola oil on it) is someone I can get behind.

On the other hand, a woman of such august contemplations, such as yourself, would well know that Sir Alec played King Richard, in the first season of the Stratford Festival (with virtually the same garb as in the reconstruction — according to drawings on display at the Theatre)
Sir Alec, a great bicylist, always said, “Good morning!” to my mother as he rode by our house.

Globe and Mail, editorial, Monday, Feb. 4.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/commentary/editorials/utah-sheriffs-threaten-the-us-government-on-gun-control/article8123058/
Editorial: “All rise in the Court of Chutzpah. In an open letter to President Barack Obama, the elected members of the Utah Sheriffs Association implicitly threaten violent resistance to any attempts by the federal government to enforce Mr. Obama’s executive orders on gun control.”
“‘We will enforce the rights guaranteed to our citizens by the Constitution. No federal official will be permitted to descend upon our constituents and take from them what the Bill of Rights – in particular Amendment II – has given them …”
“Perhaps, like Martin Luther King, the Utah Sheriffs are dedicated to opposing laws they consider unjust. Fair enough – then quit.”
But let’s compare this:
Globe and Mail, editorial, Saturday, Jan. 19.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/commentary/a-police-commissioner-canadians-can-be-proud-of/article7537240/
Editorial: “Chris Lewis, head of the Ontario Provincial Police, is being accused of undermining the rule of law. A respected judge, David Brown of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, has questioned the force’s ‘passivity’ in its delay in enforcing his injunction meant to end an aboriginal blockade on a rail line between Toronto and Montreal.”
“Judge Brown’s frustration is understandable” [but] “Mr. Lewis is determined to use his discretion wisely.”
“The Ontario Court of Appeal was faced with a similar dispute over aboriginal blockades in Caledonia in 2006. It said the police and the Crown, not judges, are in the best position to determine how to do their job. ‘The immediate enforcement and prosecution of violations of the law may not always be the wise course of action or the course of action that best serves the public interest.'”
“Canada is lucky to have police leaders like Chris Lewis …”
By the logic of Monday’s editorial, Lewis should quit.
It wasn’t that the police were deciding how best to do their job of enforcing a court order, which is what the editorial mistakenly appears to believe (or would have the reader believe), it was that they were refusing to do their job.
“All rise in the court of chutzpah”, indeed. It is not credible to castigate the Utah sheriffs for interpreting the law in a certain way that the Globe disapproves, while praising Ontario police for doing the same thing in a way that the paper approves.
Given the thumbs-up for lawlessness in the editorial of Jan. 19, it took a hell of a lot of chutzpah to publish the editorial of Feb. 4.

“Heaviest Snowfall in a Century Hits Moscow”
“The heaviest snowfall in a century brought Moscow and the surrounding region to a near standstill and left hundreds of people without power, officials said Tuesday.
And with snowfall set to continue at least until the end of the week, the authorities are bracing for more chaos on the roads.
“There hasn’t been such a winter in 100 years,” Pyotr Biryukov, deputy mayor for residential issues, said Tuesday in comments carried by Interfax. “The snow this year has already reached one and a half times the climatic norm,” he said.”

I think Newt Gingrich employed many of those tactics during his campaign; and I think the crowd responded very positively to those type of tactics. 4 example when Newt brought up the issue of poor kid working at the school to earn some extra money, the crowd was in full agreement. unfortunately the only person who seems to be able to articulate be conservative point of view besides Newt is Sarah Palin, who doesn’t have nukes wealth of knowledge and experience, but is about just as Electable.
Rob Ford and his supporters are right. Don’t ban plastic bags!
Put a Bag Over It
… [George Mason’s Josh] Wright and [Penn’s Jonathan] Klick have performed the simple task of comparing before and after rates for food borne illness in counties that enacted plastic bag bans and adjacent counties that didn’t. The results aren’t even close: counties that enact plastic bag bans see a sharp spike in hospitalizations for food-borne illness, much of it generated from reusable cloth bags that gather bacterial growths from raw food. …
‘Just another scheme for killing us old folks off … get us sick when we have to use cloth sacs to bag our groceries and, then, when we get sick, kill us off in a hospital where we get another patient’s ID bracelet (true story), the ER staff can’t get you the meds you need because “they’re on the 17th floor,” hospital personnel don’t bother reading your chart, etc.
I’m with Mayor Ford: No ban on plastic bags. (I often wonder if TO Councillors have stocks in Glad Bags …)
