So none of the advertisers thought that what they were doing violated the law?
And the NDP sold advertising by mistake?
And when and for how much is elections Canada going to fine the NDP?
If EC does nothing then essentially:
1. The NDP got a 340000 interest-free loan that they used during the last election.
2. The donors got 340000 of free advertising.
If EC does nothing then there are clear grounds to condemn them of partisanship and to reform EC and the rules they operate under.
So the NDP get caught breaking election fundraising laws and the punishment is having to return the money?
No fines.
No penalties.
Not even interest charges?
Ooh yeah. That’s a real strong deterrent.
How do we calculate how much $350,000 worth of illegal advertising helped “the orange crush” during the last election? Given the risk-versus-rewards of this little scheme, I’m certain we can expect variations of the same during the next election.
Maybe we need a big blue wave in the next election. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, eh?
The Toronto Star’s headline reads
“NDP returned $344,468 in advertising income after Conservatives complained to Elections Canada”
Why even mention who made complaint? It seems to be an attempt to give their commenters an opportunity to say what hypocrites the Conservative are. Better than facing the fact that the NDP cheated, I guess.
Love is better than anger, hope is better than fear, and a happy ending is better than anything!
Right to work. Kneecap these chumps.
Project “X” Productions… what is that, feelthy pictures?
Is that why Jack! had that pornstache?
Mikeg81, right-to-work and TAX CUT!!! Now that’s a kneecapping.
Is it only wrong when the Conservatives complain? … It does seem that it’s only wrong because they were caught.
Funny that Stephen Thomas and Associates are listed. They are a fundraising firm (mostly associated with charities). You’d think they would know the CRA rules around fundraising and sponsorship better. Or.. they don’t care.
The largest donar fraud in the history of Canada, and the media yawns and EC metes out no punishment. What Union represents EC???
Time to clean house at EC. Big time. What are they waiting for?

Liberals convicted.
NDP backtracking.
I’d say Elections Canada is doing the impartial job of overlooking election fraud that follows its mandate.

What? There’s a donair fraud in Canada?
That’s fair play for you.
So, where are the CBC cameras? Where are the concerned EC officials? Maybe Conrad Black should get his camera out and snap a few shots.
The NDP are always accusing the CPC of being bought by big business, which isn’t true. But, even if it was, what would the difference be between being bought by big business or being bought by big unions? The NDP have been hoist with their own petard.
Unions have outdone their usefulness and are just as bullish, or more so, than big business. At least big business creates jobs. The only thing unions do is suck the public teat dry and mewl for more.
If EC does nothing, it’s time for our government, in the best interests of we, the people, to kick butt. EC needs to be completely overhauled. Enough is too much.
NOW .. I want my money back from those effin LIberals.
Rose,the EC employees are PSAC.
The media is Communications,Energy and Paperworkers.
It is easy to see why they got away with a light slap on the wrist and next to nil media coverage.
