It’s way to early to say “uh-oh”, but…:
“President Obama has an overall edge in the 12 decisive battleground states that is measurably greater than his advantage in national polling. The dynamic, which may reflect a combination of lower swing-state unemployment rates and demographic advantages for the president, is causing stirrings of unease among Republicans…”
Just curious, where SDA time zone is from. Says 12Am, but it is only 8pm in the Rockies, and nothing in North America is midnight, not even NFLD.
Europe is 6 hours different.
While these postings are marked July 31, 10PM which is EST, but the main Reader’s Post says 12am, Aug 1.
Olympic security guard spits on and screams at British soldier, calls him a baby-killer.
The guard, who “left no doubt” that he was referring to military actions in Afghanistan, is described in the article as being “Asian”, which isn’t nearly vague enough, in my opinion; I think reporters should start using the term “Northern Hemispherian” instead.
Johnbrooks, the midnight time-stamp is a protocol initiated by Vίtruvius when he was doing the Reader Tips from a barge in the waters off of New Brunswick. As a living tribute to him, we never adjusted the time-zone westwards after he left.

A good sign in Texas!
Tonight the CBC Radio’s six o’clock news program ran a story on the end of the Canadian Wheat Board. the story was, not surprisingly, focused almost exclusively on an admittedly small demonstration:
“A small group of farmers held a protest outside the wheat board’s Winnipeg headquarters on Tuesday afternoon to oppose the upcoming changes.” At least 80% of the audio provided a pulpit for the rump of bitter-enders who showed up to protest the decision.
It looks like this year is probably going to be one of the worst years possible for pro-wheat board proponents given the drought down south.

Last night, Derek and Leslie mentioned the Moose Mountain Rodeo. I mentioned the oldest rodeo in Canada at Wood Mountain Sask. (Wood Mountain Stampede–123 years old)
Interestingly, they have a rodeo museum that once included Gene Autry’s saddle. How did it get there? Sorry–don’t know that.

Quote from the article, by an opponent of the initiative: “In the end, it will be the minorities Obama and [Eric] Holder are trying to help who will be hurt most.”
Obama and Holder aren’t trying to help minorities. They’re trying to destroy the American economy. When Romney and the Republicans wake up to this, and inform the American people, they may be able to save the country.
National Post, Tuesday, July 31.
http://www.nationalpost.com/related/topics/Brains+enough/7014790/story.html
“Since Canada’s labour quality has improved steadily over the years, one would expect investment in physical capital to follow suit. But in the mid 1980s, growth in Canada’s ratio between physical capital and labour slowed dramatically. Around the same time, productivity growth also fell sharply. Canada’s labour productivity grew by an average of 2.8% annually from 1962 to 1984, but slowed to an average of 1.2% yearly between 1984 and 2010.”
“The Conference Board has examined five reasons why capital intensity has levelled off over the past 25 years …
[- the weak Canadian dollar in the 1990s and early 2000s
– the introduction of the federal capital tax in 1985
– tariff and non-tariff barriers between Canada and other countries, and internal barriers
– under-investment in Canada’s public infrastructure
– an underperforming venture capital market]
Some improvements have been made in each of these areas …”
The major reasons for productivity problems are omitted: (1) massive government intervention that distorts the economy, through subsidies, regulations, and a ridiculously complicated tax system; (2) massive welfare state handouts to unproductive people, with leftist destroyers continually attempting to expand the rolls, often through these economic interventionist measures.
The crucial element in any discussion of an economy is valuation: individuals’ value-judgments on what each individual item is worth to them. An economy thrives on trade, that is, voluntary exchange for mutual benefit of values that were created through production. This and only this leads to a higher standard of living. Any measure that interferes with this process leads to a reduction in productivity. Wages rise in proportion to capital investment per worker, i.e., there is no conflict between labour and capital. The proper expression is “profits and people: both or neither”.
Ah-Good Old gene Autry.
When I was a wee lad living in Woodstock Ontario Gene Autry was rumored to be passing through and his train would be stopping at the CNR station.
My uncle grabbed me and my brother and we tore down to the station. Sure enough, Gene made a brief appearance. What a disappointment! He was only about 5 feet tall and skinny as a rail. I never saw him in the same light after that.

Krauthammer finally gets his White House apology:
Charles,
I take your criticism seriously and you are correct that you are owed an apology. There was clearly an internal confusion about the two busts and there was no intention to deceive. I clearly overshot the runway in my post. The point I was trying to make – under the belief that the Bust in the residence was the one previously in the Oval Office– was that this oft repeated talking point about the bust being a symbol of President Obama’s failure to appreciate the special relationship is false. The bust that was returned was returned as a matter of course with all the other artwork that had been loaned to President Bush for display in his Oval Office and not something that President Obama or his Administration chose to do. I still think this is an important point and one I wish I had communicated better.
A better understanding of the facts on my part and a couple of deep breaths at the outset would have prevented this situation. Having said all that, barring a miracle comeback from the Phillies I would like to see the Nats win a world series even if it comes after my apology
Thanks,
Dan Pfeiffer

“The Conservative government is pardoning a group of farmers who were arrested for trying to sell their wheat under the old law governing the Canadian Wheat Board’s monopoly as they mark the first day on which prairie producers can sell outside the board.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement this afternoon at a farm outside Kindersely, Sask.
“Never, never again” will western farmers alone be punished for trying to sell the wheat they grew on their land, Harper said to a round of applause.
Harper recalled how the farmers drove “a few loads of grain” across the border and were arrested and convicted for it.
