Tonight we take a trip back in time as we look at one of the products of a fascinating international initiative, developed under project director Bernard Fischer of the University of Virginia, called Rome Reborn:

Since 1997, the Virtual World Heritage Laboratory of the University of Virginia, the UCLA Experiential Technology Center, the Reverse Engineering (INDACO) Lab at the Politecnico di Milano, the Ausonius Institute of the CNRS and the University of Bordeaux-3, and the University of Caen have collaborated on a project to create a digital model of ancient Rome as it appeared in late antiquity.

Even seasoned travellers who’ve been pinched on the Via Veneto have never seen The Eternal City quite like this: here’s Rome Reborn: A Tour of Ancient Rome in 320 CE.

  4. I am not %100 certain the site I am looking for was posted in the reader tips at one point in time, but figured it’s worth a query anyhow. It was a post about the process of making cheese. This post was specifically aimed at educating those who deal with cheese snobs on a fairly regular basis.

    Vancouver intends to build a 30 story skyscraper…from wood…that’s right…they’ll chop down trees…oh, the humanity….and the lunacy…wonder if that’s up to earthquake code for Vancouver ?…and they’re going to use ‘laminated timber, thin sheets glued at right angles to each other…I always thought that was called ‘plywood’ ?

    Nobody makes buildings out of wood anymore. Why? Because wood isn’t especially strong (relative to steel), it involves cutting down trees, it burns readily, and creepy crawly things live and/or feast on it. Despite these horrible shortcomings, brave architects are now planning to build a 30-story wooden skyscraper in Vancouver.
    There are a bunch of reasons why we don’t have wooden skyscrapers already, but two of the biggest ones seem to be strength and the fact that wood tends to be a little bit, you know, burney. As far as strength goes, skyscraper (or any building) has to be strong enough to support its own weight, and once you get above a couple floors, wood (by itself) has a hard time with that. And seeing as wood is what most people use for making fires, you’d think that making big buildings out of it would be a terrible idea.

    Hey, this is the land where a teachers union, despite potential fines totalling over $20 million per day, thinks it can extort the provincial government into waving fines, before returning to “work”.
    Grab your beer and popcorn, this is going to be real fun watching the BCTF self-immolate. Not a fan of the Chrusty! gubmint at all, but, I despise the lunatics of the BCTF more.
    They’ve been itching for an all-out war, bring it on. Its about time that this cane to a head. Politicians have been punting this ball far too long, the BCTF, dumb as trees, think their steamers don’t stink, but couldn’t negotiate sunshine on a clear day…..

  20. While walking by a newspaper box today noticed that the BC statists have decided to ban use of tanning beds for anyone under 18. This in a province where the largest city is without sunshine for weeks at a time and, because of the northern latitude, there’s no Vitamin D production in the skin between October and April. Of course, with a doctors prescription, those under 18 can use tanning beds . . .
    Seems that infants (ie anyone under the age of 18) in BC can get oral contraceptives at puberty with no problem and they’re allowed to drive at 16. If the BC government had a shred of intelligence, it would raise the driving age to at least 30 if it wanted to reduce deaths in this age group (and far higher for certain ethnic groups). Also, I’m curious if Insite requires its “clients” to be over the age of 18 before they come inside and shoot up?
    But those are the priorities of brain dead politicians in the moonbat capital of this country.

  31. This is simply the very best piece I’ve ever read on Fascism, aka authoritarian capitalism.
    In light of the frequent, confused conversations here about LEFT-RIGHT and fascism-communism this is well worth the 10-page read.
    The most important thing is how government interventionism is really fascism lite and that it very often leads to full-blown fascism as the power elites aren’t ever likely to agree to hold the line on, or reduce, their intervention in the market economy.

There’s just one problem: it is not part of the United Nations.
    Whether the fund, which was formally created at a U.N. climate conference in Durban, South Africa last December, will get all the money it wants to spend is open to question in an era of economic slowdown and fiscal austerity. Its spending goal comes atop some $30 billion in “fast start-up” money that has been pledged by U.N. member states to such climate change activities.
