Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

What They Say About SDA
"Smalldeadanimals doesn't speak for the people of Saskatchewan" - Former Sask Premier Lorne Calvert
"I got so much traffic after your post my web host asked me to buy a larger traffic allowance." - Dr.Ross McKitrick
Holy hell, woman. When you send someone traffic, you send someone TRAFFIC.My hosting provider thought I was being DDoSed. - Sean McCormick
"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella
"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
So what word are you referring to? “it”? ;O)
Playing word games is a necessary skill for any politician. Look at the Quebec finance minister bragging about a ‘balanced’ budget in a year or two’s time when over $8 billion of their tax revenue comes from the West. I might laugh if it wasn’t so pathetic, but they all do it, including the federal Conservatives.
I don’t understand twitter. Who twitted what to whom?
Spending up 5%. Small surplus means another small decrease in government debt-until you factor in the debt of crown corps, which SaskParty steadfastly refuses to privatize, in which case debt is actually up. Who could have seen this coming-oh yeah it was me. Many times. And next election time Kate and company will vote for Team Baby-Blue for the same excuses. It is the same. Every. Single. Time.
A 4% RAISE is austere??? I think your right,Kate.Time to send Wall to economics 101 (or English comprehension). I sure would be happy if they “austered” my pension by 4%!!!
To most folks austerity means spending less than before; to some it means “a smaller spending increase than last year”. Spending more somehow means spending less.
Shorter version ….. we’ll spend more money , less fastly , until the next time we raise taxes to compensate for the more money we’re spending ……. really , really fast .
I see Sask has caught the Alberta disease ….. can’t spend it fast enough .
Is Brad Wall going to…you know…do something in office?
Being a Diet Coke version of Lorne Calvert isn’t going to amount to much and the populist “good ole Brad” is going to wear off if it isn’t backed up by something.
What would be wrong with having an absolute frozen budget for just one year? 0% increase across the board.
The Sask Party is smeared as right-wing lunacy anyway, so why not give conservatives a bit of red meat?

I think he means that Canada is safe place to grow children
now in sport club in house of church or relgion in yard in school among some bully teachers
or even freind who thier parents are alcholist and lead thier children grow in drug and alchol too
in result grow children in today life style in Canada is not safe any more
People pay to private school may have better control for thier children but end up too many homework that parents need to do for them not they do for them
it means you pay private school more money for you as parent to home work for your children
Did someone say aLcHoLiSt?
Proud of Brad and Co but yes he could surely do more.
Is Brad Wall going to…you know…do something in office?
Yes! He is going to piss away a resource boom he happened to land in, keep the seats warm for the ‘reformed NDP 2015’ campaign, and perhaps scare off more foreign investment. All with the enthusiastic backing of 90% of ‘conservatives’!
I have low expectations of all politicians. Politics is the problem never the solution.
In Calgary they “kept” city spending to a 6% increase in this years budget. Lets have a parade for city council.
Why don’t they just quit spending? Can’t be done.
What crap!
Money doubles every 6 years at 5% with this rate of spending that total budget would also double… math lesson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-QA2rkpBSY
Isn’t the word Inconceivable?
Just trying to find where the budget addresses paying down accumulated debt. A balanced budget that increases spending and doesn’t pay down debt in times of economic prosperity is a another Greece in waiting. Patting themselves on the back as the only government in Canada to have a balanced budget this year is no laudable achievement.
Is Brad Wall going to…you know…do something in office?
Yeah, he’s going to keep those small dead rural conservative welfare bum plow jockeys sucking on the public tit until his sorry ass is turfed out of office. Keep swilling, hypocrites.
The way all governments at all levels are spending it’s hard for me to believe I am earning a wage and not just being given an allowance.
Phil Phil Phil, you have no idea do you?! Get out from under you unions apron and take a look at what is happening in the real world
If Saskatchewan’s population and economy are growing or if there is inflation, an argument can be made for a small increase as holding the line.
I would still prefer government spending to shrink as a percent of GDP.
‘Lavish monastery’ conjures up the same contradictory type of imagery. The budget needs an appropriate adjective, from my read.
‘Spending Spree?”
Here’s ten more ideas for what they’re worth.
#1. Cut the $5.5 million more for the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) Helicopter Ambulance. I heard the hospitals aren’t equipped for helicopters.
#2. Cut the $4.6 million Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship, that will provide new high school graduates with up to $2,000 toward tuition fees at any Saskatchewan post-secondary institution.
If you’re smart enough to go to university you should be smart enough to figure out how to pay for it. Crushing student loan debt makes for productive workers.
#3. Cut the $3.0 million increase to expand the Active Families Benefit Program to include all children and youth under 18.
Exercise on your own dime.
#4. Cut the new Saskatchewan First-Time Homebuyers’ tax credit of up to $1,100 against Saskatchewan income tax payable.
You’re just inflating an already inflated bubble.
#5. Cut the $2 million increase to create 500 new child care spaces and $4 million for the capital costs related to those new spaces.
#6. Cut the $500,000 committed to summer literacy camps. Held in 20 communities across the province, these camps work to reduce summer reading loss by engaging children aged five to 14 in camp activities rooted in literacy and numeracy.
Half a mill to read a book? It’s called a library.
#7. Cut the $530,000 to the Saskatchewan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Or at least cut it down by half. How much cruelty is really happening?!
#8. Privatize the liquor boards.
#9. Privatize SaskTel.
#10. Cut the $15 million or so on the “Go Green” initiative.
it ain’t cheap buying votes ya know
and you need to set up a “rainy day fund” with your profits for future generations of politicians to spend
Brad Wall is getting a face change. When he wakes up in the morning . In the mirror does he now see Dalton McGuinty,s face or Hudaks. Perhaps hes had a sex change with a view to being an Alison Redford?
Where have all the Conservatives gone?
These are fakes who love big Government to the detriment of its own constituency. As long as the green stays in their pockets to multiply they seem to be happy to destroy the economies of their own Provinces for Progressivism.
Something has to change . Its like we have no opinion anymore how our Provinces are run. Because the politicians all wear the same face. All to a degree the lack of moral or Ideals to stop the Marxism for more power, with gain to themselves.
When you start to back the public animal in the corner with unlimited thief of tax monies, eventually it will turn on you with those who share the same disease.
Where is the tax break for the middle class? Where is the continued reduction in Education taxes on property? F ck Brad Wall and this phony group of NDP look alike charlatans. Wall and company needs to hear from the people at the next party gathering. He has done nothing but micro manage a system full of bureaucracy and waste. Wall and company is going to ensure a return to NDP crap in the very near future.

And a car(1/2 or 1 ton??) in every garage!
The problem is nobody wants to vote for the person who would cut government to the bone in one quick slash the day after he/she gets into power…you folks aren’t brave enough to back the person who would do these things…matter of fact, you’d all probably be the first to chastise his actions as “too dramatic”…”he could have phased in the cuts”…blah, blah, blah.
Look what happened to Mike Harris in Ontario…he actually, put the books right and took away a lot of entitlements…to this day the guy is pilloried by not only the Left but also by people who call themselves conservative (small “c”). I still say Harris should have pulled a Reagan on every single provincial employee who went on strike and de-certify all the public unions…but I bet there are people who read this blog, who think that this suggestion is “over the top”.
Imagine this, allow private medicine to take hold in the provinces (actual hospitals not just clinics), cut funding to public hospitals by 90% in the first year and by 100% in year 2. This would make all health care employees private sector employees within two years…how much cash would be saved by the government which could then be used to pay off (not down) outstanding bonds. Get out of paying for all medical procedures…if a woman wants an abortion–she can pay for it…you want to change your sex–you can pay for it…
Concurrently, cut funding to all universities by 65% with funds only going to medicine, science and engineering faculties. Imagine all those Women Studies profs and Poli Sci profs having to actually work–shovelling real BS versus the BS they’re putting into our kids’ heads. Again the money saved…towards those bonds.
Third, Education…de-certify the Teachers’ Union (and every public employee union in existence). Make the money follow the kids–so good schools get more money…put an incentive bonus for good teachers–to be chosen by the parents of the kids in the class. Those who get adverse performance ratings for five years in a row(as graded by parents)get a one way ticket out of the teaching business. Go back to the “old” math, teach phonics, get out of the sex-ed business, actually fail students who can’t grasp the basics.
Fourth, Welfare, cut it to all except those with physical and mental shortcomings (real physical impediments to actually work). Everyone else, gets the privilege of working for a living. Once the riots start…begin shooting…a bullet is only a buck not $45K-$60K of benefits for life (which most welfare recipients get for sitting around all day). Religious orders did a way better job of charity and trying to rehabilitate people.
Fifth, lower provincial taxes–the more money a person keeps the more money he’s likely to spend on goods and services.
Sixth, get rid of any department with the word “Green” or “Environmental” in it.
Seventh, lower provincial corporate taxes to single digits, kill any type of payroll tax. This will provide incentive for entrepreneurs to start businesses and to HIRE people.
Pretty drastic…but I say “go ugly early” and we’ll be able to reap the benefits of an economy that’s firing on all cylinders and a society whose kids are being taught well and being readied to take over the reins.
Remember this is Canada with a myriad of natural resources in the ground and whose inhabitants are all potentially capable of providing the next Microsoft, Ford or Bell.
paul hamer at 8:35pm – at 5% money doubles every 14.4 years. If you can safely and consistently double my money every 6 years – you are hired as my money manager.
Its called the “rule of 72” Divide 72 by the interest rate and that will give you the number of years it takes to double your money.

Favill for PM.
(except for the shooting part – call me a squish if you like)
@Scott: Just wanted to ensure that the good folks who need to get into work don’t get delayed by the ne’er-do-wells who literally have nothing to do all day but go and demonstrate. And I don’t want business owners’ establishments being destroyed by these same people.
Excellent post favill.
I would add that only non gument funded citizens get to vote (that would include gument employees).
@Favill,
after posting that I was opposed to your bullet idea, I attempted to think of what we’d rather do instead (y’know, like a any good conservative minded person does…making things better through solutions instead of empty bitching).
Couldn’t come up with anything. Gonna hafta shoot em.
I would like to also note that I received a robocall this afternoon from Favill’s campaign sending me to the wrong voting station.
Favill for PM!
@Jema54 good point. I have made the suggestion in earlier posts throughout SDA that only people with jobs and/or property should be able to vote. Criminals and those on welfare or even unemployment insurance should not get that privilege. In other words, if you pay for the government…you get to decide who’s going to make decisions on your behalf.
@Scott–in light of the rioting by Fanshawe College students in London and Queen’s students in Kingston and the carnage wrought by the mob in Vancouver over a hockey game…I will not assume people who’s easy life has been taken away from them will cheerfully find a job and slog it out for 8hrs a day or more…However, I can see them taking to the streets and disrupting society and destroying private and public property in order to get their way…I saw what the mob did to Detroit, which has never recovered from the 1967 riots. I do not subscribe to the Left’s ideology that poor people are more noble or that they are more altruistic…NO the idle poor are the most destructive segment of society and they should not wreak havoc on the very people who have worked all their lives to build their businesses, build up their material wealth and in the process enrich society through the taxes they pay. Working is hard, many times it’s boring…so the accumulation of wealth is a symbol of one’s sacrifice and hard work–which can all disappear in less than an hour at the hands of a crazed mob believing that they have a right to the fruits of somebody else’s hard work.
