Leftists the world over love to blather on & on about how “conservatives want to control your life”. In reality though, its the underlying notion of the Leftist mindset to shape everything around them into their view of Nirvana. This is done, at first, through a never-ending series of Rules & Regulations and Penalties. Here’s an example of the “Welcome” sign that greets visitors to the beaches of Santa Monica, California:
What is unreasonable about those rules?
6.66.666 No common sense on the beach.
Wall Street protesters produce demands, call for open borders
The Occupy Wall Street protesters have posted a proposed list of demands that include, among other things, a “guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment,” open borders, a $20/hr minimum wage and trillions in government spending

What? No warnings about dangerous sharp objects (shells) on the beach?
7.77.777 No FUN.

I guess it’s why the left respects totalitarian Islam so much. They just love fascism
Jeez, if there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s dinky little unilingual signs…
“Open Space Management Division”?
“You, there, ya you air. Move that cloud to the left…no your other left, idiot.”
To be fair to them, I’m pretty sure conservatives would come up with a roughly similar set of rules in response to the abusive hippies who were the impetus for that set of laws.
(They mostly boil down to “no having an all-night beach party and pissing off the neighbors” and “no living on the beach, you damned hippy”.)
I bet their biggest challenge is managing the vast empty space between their ears.
At the rate they are going they will need a much longer sign soon. Waiting for the one that says “Enjoyment will not be tolerated”.
Finally, someone had the good sense to stand up to the dog & frisbee assholes, who go out of their way to annoy everybody.
Where’s the No Smoking rule???
I’m on board with Solomon. I can’t see any problem with the rules. The reason they have to put up a sign like this is the sheer number of morons who have no consideration for others.
They forgot “No Visiting Beach”
Ralph, I was thinking the same thing …. after all the sand makes it the biggest ashtray around.
Apparetly they probably feel that the smoke will be a danger since there is always a “sea breeze.”
Of course if they are part of the “Occupy Whatever” they are permitted to break every rule without fear.
Why you picking on Americans Robert? All of those rules and MORE are in place in that over priced tourist trap you live in called BC. And you guys don’t even have the decency to post them for all to see.
Go away LIBERAL hypo! GAWD your posts are irritating and usually pointless whining name calling snivel drivel. Go away LIBERAL!
Hey. They forgot the most important one…8.88.8888…no swimming tolerated.
Although I must agree with some here. These useless laws are pretty well everywhere, thanks to parents who don’t know how to raise kids, and leftards who love anti-spanking laws.
Although I should be able to CCW there. HeeHaww. That’ll straighten some goons out.
Sorry, I’m right wing but even I agree with these rules – reason – there are two many people these days who are complete Aholes with no comment courtesy and respect for others.
I sure though that all the social conservative right wingers obey all the rules of their little churches when they cross over the threshold. Funny thing that.
Same type of people who ride Calgary transit for example with their earphones on bust such that I can hear it at the other end of the car – and it’s everything from young folks to middle age ladies and everything in between.
I remember as a young kid going to the pool and the sign read “No clothing in the pool or hot tub” which was of course as we all understood was for the purpose of hygene reasons.
My wife one night at the gym after her little work out decided her and the friend she was with would relaxe in the hot tub. So they changed into their shorts and had the usual little shower. Upon arriving at the hot tub they discovered three Muslim Somoli women dressed in full garb that they had just finished working out in at the gym with up to their necks sitting in the hot tub. I don’t think I have to explain further that you all ready get it.
uh, oh…no law against voiding and defecating.
California, a leftist state, perhaps the most so in the United States… Does not have a single topless beach. You can also forget about nude beaches. In fact, the state has been cracking down on unofficial such beaches for about 6 years now, legally harassing nude beach goers south of orange county.
Leftists say: It’s not facism when we do it.
“no drums or percussion instruments”
looks like most of these regulations are designed to control unruly leftoids
Right now a beach would be great. Any old beach will do just fine!
Leftoids like to be told what to do. They just graduate from one teat to the next.
The key to todays morality is: If you are not harming anyone, then it’s fine.
The need for this list is that people think that just about anything is fine because no one is really getting harmed.
The justification for this is that when people do those things then people are getting harmed because they can’t enjoy the beach.
These silly posted ‘rules’ are as much an announcement of modern society’s inability to deal with dickheads as it is an acknowldgement of the proliferation of the species.
I suspect that the two are related.
“Sorry, I’m right wing but even I agree with these rules – reason – there are two many people these days who are complete Aholes with no comment courtesy and respect for others.”
Exactly. Hear hear!
Now the reason we has so many Aholes is largely because of the left. Kids are not taught proper behaviour, manners are a thing of the past, courtesy doesn’t exist, children do not respect adults, etc.
Replace all these rules with a single warning:
Don’t be a dick, or you’ll get punched in the face.
Those rules make sense. I don’t have a problem with any of them.
There was no rule against bringing a gun to the beach so that means that the rules can actually be enforced.
Toooooo much bureaucracy…

That’s a pretty cool and funny sign. I’d like to pry it off that pole and take it home with me.
And this being Californica, you must by law wear a ‘cover’ if you are a pron actor while performing. (on or off the beach)

It is cleare that they run out of space, otherwise they would include
NO NOTHING
One thing missing – Don’t Eat Yellow Snow
“No Sleeping”? Why to go to a beach then?
I can’t see any problem with the rules. The reason they have to put up a sign like this is the sheer number of morons who have no consideration for others.
That’s the complete opposite of the beaches I hike, where one can trudge miles without seeing another soul, and every cove is wild, unique and different from the past year. I feel for Californians; there are still decent people there.
Posting rules like that insures that some people will flaunt the rules. People will get nasty because someone is breaking the rules and all the beach goers will have a horrible day. People are not supposed to enjoy anything in this weird world of ‘do nots’. I am glad I spent my youth in a helmetless, seat belt less, smoky, risky, wildly adventuresome world.
People own the beaches, not guments of any stripe. People can ‘control’ the beaches on their own and until people learn to rip down signs like that and other signs that tell them what they cannot do, people will be trapped in the web of the intolerant power mongers that have no depth that they will not plunge to,to control every breath that every warm body takes.
Ranchers put up fences and cattle guards to keep livestock in but sometimes the domestic livestock figure out a way to get out! Wild animals pay no attention to the fences; the latter go where they please. We had a flock of tame geese at our place that sashayed around on their own all the time. They did not have clipped wings but most of them were too hefty to fly; they were non productive ‘pets’ fed and kept on our dime. They should have been happy geese (nobody liked roast goose so they didn’t even have the ‘fatted calf’ fear)
In spite of the good life these parasites with feathers lived, one fall three or four of them took off with some wild geese that landed on our dam, the former never returned but the wild geese did and the next fall there were more defections…even geese like freedom.
Sheeple, on the other hand, build their own pens, make keys for the masters and pay for the upkeep of both the master’s place and their own prisons.
“Swim at your own risk’ is the only acceptable sign on any public beach, IMO.
With so many rules posted (many of them simple common sense), it is tempting to conclude that anything not expressly prohibited must therefore be permitted, such as the examples given in the above comments (smoking, defecating, and bringing a gun to the beach). There are an infinite number of activities not posted on the sign. Sex on the beach, anyone?
The solution is of course not more laws but fewer laws. Replace the sign with one that says:
Public beach
use common sense
respect other people
swim at your own risk
clean up
Why would smoking be on a ‘do not’ list with public defecating and shooting a gun? Get a grip, Ed Minchau!
Yeah I can understand the need to post those rules……what should be common sense and conduct just ain’t so common.
eg: No glass containers….
I recall having an inground pool and acting as host to relatives and neighbours. I strictly enforced NO GLASS CONTAINERS…..for what should be an obvious reason. Kids and adults in bare feet do not need broken glass.
I had to physically eject a brother in law for that one day…..
fool called my bluff.
My X went ballistic…..
My ma-in-law and pa-in-law were present…..they approved and told stupid to go and sit under a tree with his beer….
Now ya know why I got an X.
That pool was a pain in the butt.
Can’t understand the “no dressing or undressing on the beach”. Presumably this means one can’t take ones shirt off when one gets there or, if one came there shirtless, put a shirt on if it gets cold. That has to be the most idiotic rule I’ve ever run into.
As far as beaches go, the only beach I frequented with any regularity was Wreck Beach in Vancouver. Great spot for anatomic study and everyone quite mellow likely as a result of the ubiquitous ingestion of cannabis by the beachgoers. Also, the hike required to get to the beach filtered out a lot of idiots who could drive to other Vancouver beaches. Wreck beach was noted for nude beer and other product vendors which eliminated the need to carry a heavy load of beer to the beach and any empties were quickly picked up by a group of people who seemed to specialize in this task. No rules posted but everyone seemed to know what was and wasn’t acceptable on the beach.
sasquatch, as someone who has stepped on broken glass at a beach………..i gotta agree with ya!
I grew up there…a long, long time ago. The signs did not have many rules at all. But then again, rules were not so necessary because nearly all people had their own notions of right and wrong to guide them.
I entered Santa Monica State Beach into Google Maps, and then switched to satellite view.
The beach is 100 to 200 yards deep, from the water’s edge to the Pacific Coast Highway.
The area is mostly hotels and motels and beach houses, but there are also lots of single-family homes right across the highway.
“no playing audio devices before 8AM or after 10PM”: for the sake of the local residents.
“no drums”: drums really carry, and it’s amazing how incapable hippies are of appreciating that not everyone wants their heavenly percussion in their eardrums hour after hour.
“no camping or sleeping”: Because California has a serious “homeless” problem. Would you want lots of bums sleeping on the beach and hanging around during the day bothering people? It’s a big problem in California.
“no tents”: I’m guessing that this is because that’s a very popular beach which can get pretty crowded on warm summer days. Tents would use up too much space, reducing what’s available for everyone else.
“no glass containers” bare feet and broken glass don’t mix.
“dogs not permitted”: Because there’s nothing like dog urine and sh*t on the beach.
“ball playing in designated areas only”: Because otherwise you *will* get hit in the head with a ball thrown by fools who think it’s okay to throw back and forth no matter how many people are in between them.
And so on.
The length of the list is dismaying, but given the behavior of so many putzes, it’s not so unreasonable. Now if we could return to the days when it was easier to throw out the jerks without having to point to a posted rule….
No “No sex on the beach”
Giggidy
Jema 54: smoking, defecating, and bringing a gun to the beach were examples of things not prohibited, given by other people in comments above mine. I already have a grip – with both hands – thanks.
Two wildly stupid therefore unmentioned (shooting and pooping in public)’do nots’ connected with one acceptable and highly taxed legal habit (smoking). Smoking does not belong in your sentence, IMO.
Probably because I smoke – at the beach – and do not like to be packaged with the two other ‘do nots’, not mentioned.
