    Modern mammals, including humans, could be at risk of shrinking as a result of global warming, just as teeny prehistoric horses shrank to an even smaller size when temperatures rose 56 million years ago…

    A shrinking world population might not be a bad thing. Other scientists have suggested that getting a lot smaller might help with other global problems, like the fact that we’re running out of food and using up too much fossil fuels (sic) to drag our obese selves around, thereby releasing too much carbon dioxide…

    Can’t find a link, but the story was titled “Murder suspect in tug of war” and can be found at pressdisplay dot com.
    “A Montreal-area man wanted for his alleged part in a brutal Florida murder has set off [a] diplomatic spat between Canada and the United States.”
    “Fowler had fled back to Canada shortly after the murder and Canada granted a U.S. extradition request against him in November 2009. He appealed the decision and the Quebec Court of Appeal ruled in his favour last June, saying Fowler might never get out of prison given that Florida has abolished parole.”
    “‘It would be unacceptable and unreasonable to extradite the applicant … Florida state laws allow for life imprisonment without possibility of parole,’ read the appeals court ruling.”
    This is crazy. It started with capital punishment – refusing to extradite because that is irreversible if a mistake is made. That is defensible, whether you completely agree or not (although note that it didn’t help alleged Chinese fraudster – not murderer – Lai Changxing last year, and the usual leftist loudmouths who crawl out of the woodwork when the United States is the destination in question were nowhere to be found). And of course a person should not be extradited to face charges for “crimes” that would not be illegal in Canada.
    But to extend the rule to situations merely where parole is abolished is outside the bounds of justice and rationality. Frankly, life imprisonment without parole should be the standard punishment for most murderers in Canada too.
    This should be appealed to the Supreme Court. But the sad truth is that it might not even be overturned up there. One of its judges once refused to extradite a suspect to the U. S. because the penalty awaiting him there was 20 years in jail, as opposed to five in Canada.
