A good article on our Queen. Although I admit to being a bit of a monarchist with Full English grandparents on one side.
My favorite line from the article: Queen Elizabeth II has personified the British middle-class virtues: moderation, unflamboyant consistency and unflappable reliability.
    God Save the Queen!

  2. Dear Canadian Medical Establishment,
I’m not quite sure what to make of you. On the one hand, you people are self-regulating in most provinces, which I have a problem with in principle, though I’m not sure how these issues play out in practice. You do good work with pushing vaccines, which I respect, as I think children need the MMR.
However, you seem to be confused as to why parents worried about autism can be resistant to having their children vaccinated. I’ll explain; it’s because of a very long history of garbage like this:
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/parenting/young-children/children-health/the-risks-of-prescribing-antipsychotics-to-kids/article2325968/
You people couldn’t have spent a hundred grand or so on a study before trying this out?

  3. My Dad used to say when someone points a gun on you, than says their going to kill you. You believe them. Diplomacy is not an option anymore. This is not about goods or tariffs, even land. This is your death or stopping the would be killer. This is a hard truth, but should be obvious. If you are deluded enough not to believe what these people are saying. Your dead.
When the blue iron of a gun is sticking in your guts, survival is the only option at any cost. This too is a hard fact. They are not joking. There is nothing you can do to stop them.

  4. Somewhat related to tonight’s reader tips (on the note side) I have a humble suggestion.
At the ripe young age of 36, and after consulting with some of the smarter people that I grew up with, the Boomers are the Do As I Say, Not As I Do generation.
    DAISNAID
Elvis died from a painkiller addiction, on the toilet trying to force Opiate induced constipation out.
No amount of greasy food can slide that load through intestines that are too stoned to remember to sh!t. Get over it.
The Rolling Stones are a sad, old parody that ripped off American Blues singers.
    Ditto for Led Zepplin.
    And Clapton.
    And The Guess Who.
    And the Monkees
    Etc, etc etc.
The Beatles were a manufactured pop band that started out as art/punk, signed a contract, got famous for making pubescent girls wet, discovered LSD alongside a brilliant engineer that pioneered tape FX, with them along for the ride.
Now you’re old and irrelevant, your revolution was nothing more than selling out your great grandchildren and leaving them with the bill.
Congratulations, at least we can’t be any stupider than you.
And screw you Gen X you sold out your kids.(I gave up the fight years ago. Now …… why am I even bothering to type this.

  5. I am pretty much convinced that Reimagine The CBC is actually run by the CBC, or at least a govt dept.
I sent them a tweet five days ago asking why all suggestions for privitization were removed. Last night they got back to me. Their response? They suggested I read the community terms of reference.
Sounds like a govt dept to me!

  6. dwight, there are many exceptions to the Baby Boomer malaise that post here and live across North America that are doing their best to counter act the destructive forces the Boomers unleashed. The spearhead phalanx of this group smoked and b*nged their brains out in Woodstock and now they control our society.

  7. Who would have ever thought. Russia going the opposite way of North America.
    Buzz Hargrove take note.
From September 2012, fundamentals of religion will be introduced as an obligatory subject in all schools of Russia. According to their own (or, probably, their parents’) choice, schoolchildren, starting from the 4th or the 5th year, will study fundamentals of Orthodox Christianity, Islam, Judaism or Buddhism (these denominations have been officially recognized “traditional for Russia”), or a course which shortly tells about the history of all these religions. Those who will not want to study religion will be able to attend alternative classes of secular ethics.

  8. Dwight–anyone who looks to the celebrities and the music world for their mentors is bound to be disappointed. I’m sure there’s an equivalent list that could be fashioned from today’s glitterati. As far as the original blues singers–many of them had their fame revived because of Bob Dylan, and others who “ripped them off”. Many of those songs went back so far in the annals of folk tunes, that they never actually belonged to anyone. Robert Johnson and others were originals but I doubt anyone today would know all that much about them except that people like Eric Clapton recorded their songs–always paying tribute when they did so.

  9. dwight.
Not sure what has instigated your anger, but I am part of a group of Boomers that refuse to be defined by the parameters you have described.
That was part of journey, but not our identity.

    “Council to Grits: Send money”
“London is sending a spending wish list to the Ontario government — and help with economic development in the wake of Electro-Motive’s closing is at the top of the list.
The city’s finance and administration committee will meet Monday to review the city’s 2012, Ontario pre-budget consultation report, where it asks the province for financial help.
It is a diverse report, touching on areas such as social services, infrastructure and health care.
But nothing is as ambitious as the more than $500 million it wants for economic development, said Coun. Joni Baechler, who sits on the committee.
“London has a real need right now, look at our unemployed,” she said, referring to the 9% rate, which will worsen once the impact of EMD closing, and the 700 jobs lost, is felt.”

  13. it’s official…Cupid is an infidel
BANDA ACEH (IINA) — Ulema in Aceh have warned Muslims, the younger generation in particular, that observing Valentine’s Day is not allowed in Islam and against Sharia law that is in force in all of Aceh province.
“It is haram for Muslims to observe Valentine’s Day because it does not accord with Islamic Sharia” Tgk Feisal, general secretary of the Aceh Ulema Association (HUDA), said on Monday.
In Islam, he said, love should not be expressed or shown on a certain day only but every day. “Therefore, Islam’s younger generation should not participate in the celebration of a foreign festivity,” he said.
Faisal Ali who is also chairman of the Aceh branch of Nahdlatul Ulama called on Muslim parents, especially those in Aceh, to instruct and supervise their children in the matter.
“We must prevent the Muslim younger generation in Aceh from being poisoned by a culture that contradicts our Muslim values. Therefore, everybody, parents in particular, should give our youth the proper guidance,” he said.
He also called on the government to uphold and implement Islamic Sharia in “serious and sincere ways and not just out of political expediency or momentarily.”
“Islamic Sharia cannot prevail in Aceh as expected if it is not supported fully by the government and other parties in authority,” he said.

  14. from the “you just can’t make this sh*t up department”…
You cannot cure this kind of insanity and it can’t be reasoned with. Between this, ‘honour killings’, the destruction of antiquities and the prosecution of djinns and people reincarnated as dogs, islamic ‘society’ has lost any pretext it ever had as being ‘civilized’.
The best thing is to just walk away from the Middle East, drill our own oil, help Israel build a wall around their country and defend it and then wait for the islamists to kill each other off arguing over interpretations of the qu’ran.

Following are excerpts from a debate on the “invasion” of Israeli products into Sinai, which aired on Egyptian Dream2 TV on February 1, 2012:
Muhammad Al-Mane’i, Sinai Bedouin: There was a time when they would bring us jeans. These pants used to have belts. If you looked at these belts from the front, you’d find a secret compartment, and when you opened it, you would find a magnet inside. When we asked what these magnets were, we were told that they cause sterility.
Interviewer: In other words, it causes infertility.
    Muhammad Al-Mane’i: Exactly.
Interviewer: There was a time when these jeans with belts would invade us from Israel, and we used to take the magnets out and chuck them away.
    […]
Interviewer: Israeli products contain lethal poison. You might not feel this poison now, but you will in the future. Israel will remain an enemy lying in wait for Egypt, no matter what happens and regardless of the agreements, because Israel has its eye set on Egypt.

“A Saskatchewan law limiting the ability of public sector workers to go on strike has been ruled unconstitutional by a Queen’s Bench judge.
In a 132-page decision released Monday, Regina Justice Dennis Ball said the Public Service Essential Services Act, also known as Bill 5, infringes on workers’ rights and is of “no force or effect.”
However, a “declaration of invalidity” will be suspended for a year, Ball said.
The law, bitterly opposed by labour groups, was passed by the Saskatchewan Party government in 2008.”
