In the early 1920’s a group of Canadian musicians crossed the great briny to become the resident band at New Princes’ Restaurant in Piccadilly in the heart of London. In tonight’s musical selection, recorded in November 1925, the New Princes’ Toronto Band and their unidentified vocalist perform a vaguely indelicate canoeing song about the hearty open-air pleasures of Paddlin’ Madeline Home.

In Michigan, the EMs have sweeping powers — among other things, to hire and fire local government employees; renegotiate, terminate, or modify labor contracts (with state-treasury approval); revise contract obligations; sell, lease, or privatize local assets (with state-treasury approval); and change local budgets without local legislative approval. They can strip local elected officials of their power; indeed, according to Joe Harris, the EM of Benton Harbor, Mich., “the only authority that [local elected officials] can have is the authority that’s provided to them, or is given to them by the emergency manager.”

I hope no one wasted their time watching DA WUN, whining about ‘what’s fair’ and bashing the successful.
What a piece of dirt he is, and I’m being very gracious.
DanBC, I watched the whole thing…and found Obama’s speech mediocre. Timothy Geithner’s facial expressions were *interesting,” especially his apoplectic look after Obama said that the money that will be saved by the ending of the Iraq war will be divided into halves…Half to pay down the deficit and half for infrastructure projects. How can you pay down the deficit with money that isn’t there? The money has been BORROWED.
He said that high school kids must either graduate or stay in school ’til 18…Is this in the purview of the federal government?
Mitch Daniels did a good job responding to the State of the Union speech. No flash, just common sense.

Oops. Just realized that I typed “deficit” instead of “debt” in my posting above (re. Obama’s speech.)

Yes, folks, WWIV is now raging, out-of-control, going viral. On one side, Big Oil, Dirty Coal, Hot Gas and their puppet, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce lobbyists and billions. On the other side, McKibben, 350.org, and millions of environmental activists, protestors, communities who are ramping up, who are getting more aggressive, who don’t buy Big Oil and the chamber’s outrageous scorched-earth war strategies, people who want to Save the World for future generations in 2050 and beyond.

Here’s what Stephen Harper Haters [aka Liberals] do in their spare time!
“Spengler: Forget about Economic Recovery – Obama Is Toast
President Obama thinks that the improving economy will win him a second term, the New York Times reports today. Whatever he’s drinking, order me a double. His poll numbers look a little better because the Republicans have spent the past several months in a fratricidal bloodbath. Fortunately, the memory of the American electorate for such antics is short. Once we choose a candidate (and I am happy with Romney, Santorum, or Gingrich) and unite behind him, we will win, unless, of course, we find a way to sabotage ourselves.
People are hurting, and badly. The official unemployment rate may have fallen, slightly, but the real unemployment rate — the number of working-age Americans who aren’t working — rose from about 12% before the 2008 crisis, to about 23%, and hasn’t come down. That includes people who have retired early because they can’t find work, spouses who used to earn a second income but have gone back to homemaking because work isn’t available, self-employed people whose businesses have collapsed, young people who live in their parents’ basement because they can’t afford tuition and can’t find work. The chart below, courtesy of the Shadow Government Statistics website, shows (in the blue line labelled “SGS alternative”) the way unemployment feels to Americans: one in four Americans who could be working, isn’t. That’s roughly twice the pre-recession level.

“Until last November, Strong was a member of the Forum’s foundation board.
Founded in 1970, the Forum’ annual meeting was until recently a low-key affair which encouraged the heads of multinational companies to rub shoulders with leading politicians and academics, as well as some informal international diplomacy.
Daniel Wood wrote about Strong in an article entitled The Wizard of the Baca Grande (West Magazine, Alberta, Canada, May 1990): “From an interview with Council of the World Economic Forum co-chairman Maurice Strong, in which he outlines the plot of a novel, `he would love to compose if only he could write.’
“Each year, (Strong) explains as background to…the novel’s plot, the World Economic Forum convenes in Davos, Switzerland. Over 1,000 CEO’s, prime ministers, finance ministers, and leading academics gather in February to attend meetings and set economic agendas for the year ahead. With this as a setting, he then says: ‘What if a small group of these world leaders were to conclude that the principle risk to the earth comes from the actions of the rich countries? …In order to save the planet, the group decides: Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized nations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring this about?’”

A Salafi sheikh in Egypt has reportedly issued a fatwa that buying [or driving] a Chevrolet vehicle is haram because the American brand’s logo looks like the Christian cross.
Prominent Egyptian TV presenter Amr Adeeb takes the sheikh’s joke-of-a-fatwa to task, saying, “We’ve reached a really strange place with this.”

“Heavy snowfall during the past two months pushed average levels at the Alpine town to 1.55 meters, the second-highest for Jan. 24 since data were first compiled 66 years ago, according to the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos. Risks from sliding snow are mounting as total accumulation for the winter rose to a record and drifts reached almost twice as high as last year, the Institute said.

NEWS FLASH: “Hillbilly Heaven” needs our help!
Another restaurant, this time in Hamilton, Ontario, is under attack for being politically incorrect. Hamilton’s “Centre for Civic Inclusion” is demanding that “Hillbilly Heaven” change its menu to contain more culturally inclusive foods, and that it’s owner should issue a public apology for the culturally-incorrect signs he has posted.
The Centre for Community Inclusion appears to operate like another Warmanesque bait and entrapment operation — apparently unsuspecting “immigrants” keep showing up at the Hillbilly Heaven (which is obviously a specialty Appalachia rib joint) demanding Chinese and Korean food, and Islamic halal. Based on complaints from these “customers”, Evelyn Myrie, who runs the Centre is making the demands against the restaurant.
Evelyn Myrie is coincidentally Jamaican, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that she is prejudiced against “White trash hillbillies” serving up food from Appalachia. According to “Talk Radio” this morning, her centre is financed by taxpayer dollars, and it is also pay-for fee service — for a fee you can file a complaint against someone for not being “culturally inclusive” and the Centre will investigate (i.e. bait, trap and harrass) the offender.
Here’s the link (there’s also an online poll that might go horribly wrong in SDA hillbilly tradition):

Paul Dewar is being endorsed for NDP leader by Maher Arar. THAT oughta do him a lot of good.
“Paul Dewar is being endorsed for NDP leader by Maher Arar.” Not surprising, as they both have the same end game, that being the destruction of western liberal democracy.
“Paul Dewar is being endorsed for NDP leader by Maher Arar.” Interesting — Arar was supposedly “tortured” while encarcerated (apparently no marks were found on his body and he emerged surprisingly healthy). But I wonder if this is Dewar’s feeble attempt at doing “penance” for ignoring torture victims in the past (see http://ricardostories.wetpaint.com/page/32+years+after+the+revolution+Reagan+is+right).
P.S.: EBD, can you release my “Reader Tip” from earlier? I thought it was a pretty good story link — or was there something unacceptable about it?

“Judge’s order in ‘birther’ case unlikely to draw Obama”
“Even though President Barack Obama has been summoned to a court hearing here Thursday, don’t expect the Commander in Chief to come.
Obama will embark on a three-day trip following his State of the Union address Tuesday evening, White House press secretary Jay Carney said during a press briefing Monday. The White House has said that Obama will be in Las Vegas, Denver and Detroit this Thursday.
In a surprising ruling Friday, a Georgia state administrative judge declined to quash a subpoena directing Obama to attend a hearing Thursday at the Fulton County courthouse on a challenge to strike him from the Georgia ballot this fall on claims he is not a natural born U.S. citizen.”

“Ornge is under scrutiny on multiple fronts. The Globe and Mail has reported that the investigation wing of the Health Ministry’s Emergency Health Services Branch is investigating 13-Ornge related incidents. The cases, including three deaths, mostly relate to complaints about either response times or the adequacy of Ornge’s new helicopter fleet.
As well, forensic auditors from the Finance Ministry are examining Ornge’s books and the Auditor-General is conducting a value-for-money audit.”
