In tonight’s Tips music, recorded live during a June 1975 concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, the Rolling Stones – along with Ian Stewart on piano – blast their way through a rollicking performance of It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll.

  1. Rick Santorum boasts about “(teaming) up” with Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, and *Barbara Boxer* in a 2006 Senate campaign ad. (h/t Moonbattery)
    In this radio interview, he makes you wonder why Republicans would even vote for him:

    “This whole idea of personal autonomy, well, I don’t think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do, and they have this idea that we, that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down, and keep our regulations low, and that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom – we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues, you know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world…”

    What a surprise that an NDP leader wannabe call the oil sands, tar sands. Also, no surprise that she is pandering to unions, as any good NDP politician who is bought and paid for will do.
    I would love to know how much they make if the company is trying to knock the salary down 50%. It would be unreasonable if they are making $15-$20 an hour, but anything over $30 would not surprise me. A company has to do what it has to do.

    A site that says the salary averages $34 an hour, which would be reasonable for skilled labour. But if your choice is $17.00 an hour or no job, what would you chose? I would start looking for another job if I made $34 an hour and they wanted me to take a pay cut, but if my only skill isn’t marketable and no one else would pay me that much, I guess I would be happy to have a job.

  4. EBD – I think he’s a reverse-libertarian, if you see what I mean. Socially conservative and economically liberal. A fair number of right-wing-type Catholics are. (BTW, what ever happened to Newt Fever?)

  14. EBD there is a causal relationship between lax morals and debt. If you won’t stand for the small stuff you won’t stand for the big either. If there is no restraint on having irresponsible sex there is no restraint on borrowing money without the intent of paying it back.

  18. EBD, there is no ideal candidate. Santorum has continually said he’s for small government and has focused on America returning to what it used to be, a manufacturing giant. He talks about blue collar jobs and respect for hard work. I’ve listened to most of the debates, including tonight’s in its entirety. The reason gay marriage keeps coming up is because the debate hosts try to skewer Republican candidates with it. Tonight, I thought that Romney was quite strong, especially when he turned the tables on the idiotic question posed by George Stephanopoulos regarding contraception. That was priceless! Newt Gingrich did really well, too. They’re all conservative, but they don’t agree on everything, just as SDA members don’t agree on everything.

    If racking up debt, and not paying your debts, is evidence of lax morals (and I think it is) then American politicians – as opposed to, say, homer-sexuals – have the laxest morals extant.

    Not really. Both are downstream symptoms, or evidence, of a larger moral breakdown, but the debt crisis – excessive borrowing by governments and private citizens alike – isn’t caused by gays, or by people wearing bondage gear. If the U.S. (or Greece) brought in a million soldiers to crack down on people who engage in profligate sex, or make them cover up their ta-tas, it wouldn’t solve the debt problem.

  25. No one can write an Eulogy like Mr Steyn. He can make human even the worst jerks.
    This though was a masterpiece of real compassion set in words. I hope the Santorum’s read this column. Beautifully executed with no malice , just a quiet disgust at the actions of a few evil men.
    I don;t hold with Santorum’s politics, but as a man he is head & shoulders above the vicious animals that assaulted his families trial of grief
    Me Steyn caught that with more in one of his best works I figure to date.Only he could have written this Masterly to inject real humanity for the aggrieved while describing an ugly event .
    Thank you Mr Steyn fore an artful piece of prose. A very flower of kindness.

    It is interesting. The reference to global warming was spurious and unnecessary. Weather like that is considered normal every few years by those of us who live up here. It isn’t caused by the gradual warming that’s been happening since the last ice age, nor is it caused by human activity as the AGW religion would like us to believe.

  39. I appreciated John Baird’s condemnation of the violence in Nigeria. But the statement was somewhat more tepid than I’d prefer, and one can’t have it both ways, as he seems to suggest. E.g., Baird states:

    “ . . . injured by senseless violence” and “. . . targeted because of their religious beliefs” is an oxymoron.
    What “violence”? MUSLIM—not mentioned. What “religious beliefs”? CHRISTIAN—not mentioned. Why can’t people just call a spade a spade? Trying to sugar coat unpalatable truths is a/n inter/national pastime and a disgrace: it avoids naming the problem, which makes the solution all the more elusive. Political correctness has GOT.TO.GO.

  44. Mountain Equipment Co-op has become an active participant in stopping the northern pipeline. They are funding the group that opposes the project. I don’t have a link yet,but the kid on Guestion Period stated that they receive money from the co-op.

  48. The above article estimates that 2 1/2 million ducks are missing. They may be with the caribou,but it does make those 1,600 in the tailing pond rather inconsequential.
