That report was BS from the opening ‘political bombshell’remark to the end.Fife states that Mr. White received the senate position because of his gun registry view. That may not be the case. Fife says that Mr. White will be in the senate for 22 years. That is untrue.He knows it,but he’d rather say an outright lie that may tarnish PMSH. What a miserable excuse for a journalist.

We should get rid of the Senate, it does almost nothing of any value and exists only for patronage opportunities. It’s nice to think that it provides a “sober second thought” to the legislative excesses of the great unwashed, but in my lifetime I can’t recall one example of that, the Senate rubber-stamped all sorts of bad legislation and I doubt that there are more than twenty people there who even care about their responsibility at all, most just care about the status and the paycheque. If we must have one, it should be elected.

a REFORMED senate – equal and elected (it already is effective – it needs no new powers) would give the provinces an equal footing at the federal level and thus go a long way towards strengthening and stabilizing our confederation.

14.29% of Senators in this appointment round are elected aka Betty Unger bumping the Senate to an all time high of 1.91% of the total Senate being elected.
Vern White is about as good as Chief of Police come and a good person for the law and order file.
Norman Doyle a decent and familiar choice to increase Conservative representation in Newfoundland. He’s someone who Harper trusts who wasn’t kicked out by the voters and is well familiar with how things run on the island.
JoAnne Buth seems like a solid choice. I can’t think of a lot of current hacks in the Senate that have any clue on agricultural issues. Certainly not any in the Liberal caucus. Besides I’m sure Harper has someone in mind already to appoint to the Canola Council, also anyone has to be better than Sharon Carstairs whom she replaced.
Asha Seth from Ontario as a Medical Doctor and Philanthropist is a good choice especially with Conservatives targeting Ontario’s new arrival community. I’m sure its a thank you for helping secure a GTA majority in the last election.
The Quebec picks look a little weak. But given that the Prime Minister doesn’t have many friends to choose from my expectations aren’t high.
Ghislain Maltais a former Liberal member of the National Assembly from the 80’s and 90’s bothers me and Jean-Guy Dagenais a failed third place Quebec candidate from the 2011 election i feel kinda meh about.

I don’t know if he actually came out and opposed the registry, but, I’m pretty sure that Calgary Police Chief Rick Hansen didn’t have much good to say about it. If this fellow, Vern White, did publicly oppose the registry then I think we can expect him to be someone with skills and common sense that will serve us well. It sounded to me that he has already had a conversation with the Prime Minister about what national interests he would get involved in.
I seem to remember that PMSH’s early Senate appointments signed agreements that limited their terms to 8 years. Would he not still be following that practice?
Mr. Robert Fife went on national television and tried to lampoon Vern White for taking a position in Canada’s Senate. He ascribed motives to Mr. White that I’m sure even he, Fife, knows aren’t true. Vern White is not a politician or other public figure in the sense that news people should be able to take cheap shots, certainly not cheap shots that have no basis in the job the individual is currently holding. I’d call Robert Fife and nearly everyone else above a clerical level in CTV’s news gathering divsion a lying sack of sh!t but it would do no good so I won’t.
While I’m ranting, I’m also going to say that I’m way past tired of socialist politicians, yellow journalists, trolls and other “pundits” bashing PMSH about stacking the senate. Mr. Harper has made several attempts to change the appointment process only to be stonewalled by the foregoing every inch of the way. So, he is now following the existing procedures and appointing the people he wants. Anyone who doesn’t like that, start helping to make changes or STFU.
