  1. And to think how much flak Andre Picard of the Globe took for a similar point many months ago.
Secondly, the real cause of death of cloaked in much mystery and has not been officially reported. Why the mystery? Where are the questions?
And yes, Jackapalloza, including the chalk slogans was anything but spontaneous. Knowing you are dying lets you plan your funeral and tribute….and Jack, well he was Jack until the end and apparently after.

  2. “In the same circumstances, Stephen Harper and Michael Ignatieff would have been questioned more aggressively.”
    Says it all.
When Chantal Hébert speaks she is always worth listening to. One of the truly objective reporters of our time. I don’t always agree with her, but she is fair.

  3. James,
Do you mean ever, or that the cancer wasnt the cause of his ultimate demise?
I dont disbelieve he had prostate cancer….his dad had it and his form of it has a genetic component to it. If it was the cause it clearly spread. But if that is the case then why the silence…..maybe he soemthing worse happened, like he went to a US clinic to be checked up on or get an alternative treatment…..in Jack’s circles that would be a something worth hiding.

  4. He probably had prostate cancer which when combined with a sexually transmitted disease that kills the immune system is quite lethal.

  5. I’m pretty sure that his prostate cancer was in his hip bones and he knew he was dying within months. Never-the-less he thought so little of Canada that winning the election and leaving it leaderless was his idea of what was best for Canada.

  6. I don’t think he had cancer.
He looked like an AIDS patient but he also looked like a cancer patient.

  7. Come to think of it. My father had prostate cancer and it took him about 20 years to die. Jack went really fast.

  8. Clive beat me to it.
“In the same circumstances, Stephen Harper and Michael Ignatieff would have been questioned more aggressively.”
Nah. Harper they would have gone after with pitchforks and torches, like always. Iggy they’d have fussed over like Jack! Layton.
Plus, I’m forced to say I’m getting REALLY f-ING TIRED of that “…the voters they have a duty to inform” canard. Journalists are work-a-day slobs with no duty higher than their paycheck. They are for sale to the highest bidder just like any ditch digger.
Last 70 years the highest bidder has been the socialist arm of the Liberal Party of Canada. Chantal Hebert can protest the “professionalism of Journalism” with a capital “J”, but the flat truth is they are bought and paid for Liberal/Socialist shills.
Iggy lost that card game with a stacked deck and three aces up his sleeve. Jack! won Quebec because the Quebec media are a pack of insane commies who didn’t care if he dropped dead during his acceptance speech if he could hold back the Harper cowboy onslaught.
None of these media people give a single sh1t about Canada, and their pretense of “objectivity in the service of the common man” makes me nauseous.

  9. What the MSM has never picked up on is the west would have left eastern Canada behind and forged ahead without them. Eastern Canada has always though of the west as a milk cow and nothing more. We feed it and take their sh@t and they take the milk.

  10. Bet you anything BTW that @kady knew everything and her little friend rosie “these highschool students are asking better questions than me” barton did too.

  11. The money quote in Hebert’s article:
“Some lessons are learned the hard way. One of the harder ones of the 2011 political year is that the media, when it looks the other way rather than pursue unpleasant, unpopular but yet relevant avenues are really not doing anyone a service, least of all the voters they have a duty to inform.”
Truer words were never written; except I doubt that lesson has actually been learned by anyone.
But that being said…this is really a tough one. We all watched the campaign…Layton actually seemed to improve and strengthen, and showed a lot of energy during the campaign, and it wasn’t obvious he might be anything other than the 3rd party leader until the campaign’s 11th hour.
In the battle against media bias, there are much easier battles to pick than this one. This is a rare case where I’m not necessarily onside with the media criticism.

  12. I absolutely believe that it amounts to fraud, running on a ticket that might possibly make you P.M. when you know very well you’re dying, quickly.

  13. Jack is now with God and Son. I expect he will have much in common with the Son, the original peace/love hippie … No?
Question: Where was Hebert’s reporting on this topic during the election campaign?

  14. clive
“When Chantal Hébert speaks she is always worth listening to.”
you do my listening for me, as I wouldn’t waste my time
cuz, were the h3ll was she on this file during the election?????

  15. GYM: :”(where) were the h3ll was she on this file during the election?????”
Like Kate mentioned yesterday in the Cherry mess-up: she was eating another jouros turd.

  16. The media is doing the job of Hermes. Just like the original Hermes the media’s message is garbled. It is up to each one of us to apply ourselves to distilling the truth from the trash, both of which are present in the message of our modern Hermes.
Those who are willing to be fooled will be fooled every time. The truth could have been known to anyone who cared to grasp it. Jack had cancer. It was quite apparent that the cancer was not cured or in remission when Jack broke his hip. The sight of Jack walking with a cane was evidence enough that Jack was not a healthy man and that he would not be a good choice for PM.
Of course his political belief system was reason enough for me to never vote for him but that is a tale for another day.

  17. Frankly speaking Hebert, the journalists have yet to do their jobs properly for decades. Why now. must be sensing that the media is taking a licking.

  18. What Chantal Hebert says about the media is undoubtedly true. But would it have changed the Quebec vote?
The Quebec tribe gambled that there would be a minority government. By voting en masse for the Dippers, they figured a Dipper/Liberal coalition would form the government. In this scenario, Quebec, with so many Dipper seats, would again be the tail wagging the Canadian dog.
But something funny happened. The tribe had not noticed that in recent years population and wealth have shifted westward in Canada. Political power has followed. The result is a majority government with the Quebec tribe on the outside looking in. Their gamble blew up in their faces.
Would wide-spread knowledge about the true nature of Layton’s illness have made a difference? We will never know for sure but a tribe calculating the way Quebec did last May could easily dismiss this factor. Jack, at the end of the day, represented just one seat. In their calculus at that time, the coalition gambit could work with or without Jack’s seat because they discounted or did not understand, the westward shift of power.
Get used to it, Quebec. Your days as the power broker in Canadian politics are behind you.

  19. Nothing more to add Phantom, on of the best summations ever of the so called objective media whores of modern urinalism. JMD you finished what should be read in every schools Canadian social studies. Great minds and thinkers hang out here, other than the usual dopey trolls.

  20. Jack layton was a fraud to the end. Fitting I guess.
The proof as they say is in the pudding. The old commie ran on a platform of ready to lead.
Now we see what a fraud that was. Thank God he lost.

  21. The fraud of the NDP in Quebec has already shown cracks in its bubble.
The Dipper poopularity is already well on the wane. Will be interesting watching them return to never never land next election, but what will fill the chasm of crony Quebec politics?

  22. Clive, I agree with you. On the few occasions I read the Red Star (mostly when I’ve nothing else to read, I’m at a coffee shop or on the subway, and there’s a free Star laying about), I’ve found Hebert to be coherent, logical, and free of cant.

  23. You can be sure that if the world knew Jack was terminal then Quebec would have voted Bloc and Lib and the Dip vote West of Ontario would have held their nose and voted Lib.
So next time a Lib says it was misleading tory ads….tell them it was misleading NDP medical diagnosis that did Iggy in.

  24. Imagine Canada with Jack as leader, then suddenly the nation is without the fatherly leadership of Jack. How would we cope? We dodged a bullet on that one when we settled for Harper didn’t we?

  25. I commented at Hebert’s Paper, excoriating the media for refusing to report the TRUTH about Jack Layton’s medical condition.
It was obvious to anyone in the medical profession that Layton was in the terminal stage of cancer. A relative,30 year RN who’s seen it all, said in early Spring,”that man has only a few months to live. He’s terminal”.
I naively argued that surely a Party Leader wouldn’t run for election knowing he wouldn’t be around to run the Country.
    I lost that one!
The MSM failed Canadians big time. If they have any claims to “journalistic integrity”,they sure as hell didn’t live up to that ideal on the Layton story.
I’d say they should be ashamed of themselves, but I’m not that naive anymore.

  26. Phantom, well said @ 1:43.
Although this is not a recent phenomenon,as the newspapers of the mid 1800s in Upper and Lower Canada were aligned with either the Grit or Tory parties. Someone may be able to correct me, but the limited knowledge I have of the history of the time suggests they were fairly balanced as compared to now.
The news print media, even in the prairies, other than the National Post is aligned with the Liberal and NDP parties. Many of the Quebec papers are in bed with the Bloc.
The news (?) and opinion part of Canadian television is overwhelmingly Liberal and does not like the start up of Sun News and as you have no doubt seen are attacking the Sun ceaselessly.

  27. Gym “cuz, were the h3ll was she on this file during the election?????”
I see your point, but she is also one of hundreds of media folks. As much as anything, she is looking backwards and saying “We shoulda done more.” And now, at least she has the gonads to admit failure, which is not something you see every day from media folks.
She also makes the key point that the MSM would not have given a rat’s ass about “hurting” Harper because they are all so left wing. That is her key point and she is to be acknowledged for that.
I stand by my claim that she is one of the most objective reporters around. She are Rex are a great pair.
    Regards,
    Clive

  28. So what is she not saying?
Hebert always alludes to something in her columns instead of outright saying it. Which journos didnt do their job? What of the story not reported, and what of the outcome had their been a minority win?
Say what you want of Hebert’s objectivity, she is still a closet separatist/fair weather federalist and knows what team she depends on for legitimacy.
The beast isn’t dead until it’s oxygen supply can be cut off.

  29. really, nobody outside of quebec was buying jack’s junk, so why the handwringing?
Layton as PM, woohaa! fire up another fattie chantal!
anyone could see Layton was on a downhill slide. except the “journalists”.

  30. BL@KBIRD
Imagine Canada with Jack as leader, then suddenly the nation is without the fatherly leadership of Jack. How would we cope?
We could have voted for an opportunist and got a real communist.

  31. Did you hear about the hybrid cow they bred in Quebec?
They crossed a giraffe and a regular cow. The hybrid cow grazes in the ROC and gets milked in Quebec.

  32. john g – maybe, but I’m more concerned about what the MSM knew (and I suspect they knew a LOT) and choose not to tell the public!!!
Did we get the airbrushed version of Layton’s campaign (we know that he was telling one story in the Quebec campaign that was never told in the ROC campaign) where the MSM cherrypicked the events where Layton was looking good?
Anyone who has had a friend or relative go through cancer treatment were asking the questions, but the MSM kept up the illusion that all was fine – nothing to see here. Even at his press conference where people were shocked at how he looked, the MSM kept up the message that Layton would be back for the opening of Parliament and right up to a couple of days before he died, the MSM was reporting the Layton was doing well and was going to be back. Really??? All it does is drive one more nail into the coffin of the MSM’s credibility – then need to address this and soon, or no one will believe ANYTHING they ‘report’.

  33. I think Olivia Chow’s outright refusal to say what cancer he died of tells it all. he didnt die of Cancer
Jack lived and died a fraud courtesy of the
MSM having not made one accomplishment in his long and expensive life on the taxpayers dime.
and watching the new Ottawa power couple as CBCpravda interviewed them on election night spewing their agenda with the CBC lapdog, yes you Peter Mansbridge nodding about the NDP having a say. NO. they have no say in a majority government .
and much as I didnt like the state funeral , it was a brilliant peice of stategy from PMSH. It gave the lefties their show. It shut the Liberals off the stage , and it showed that Lewis couldnt prevent himself from self agrandizing , and it showed that Jack and Olivia were on the dole to the end.
Stephen Harper , you magnificent bastard.
