Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Saskatchewan’s NDP gov’t puts tax dollars to work in 2007;
Work on the $1 million dollar project will be complete by July 31, 2007. The tender for painting the [100 government owned] hopper cars has been awarded to GE Railcar Repair Service Company of Regina and the contract for the decals has been awarded to Arco Graphics Inc. of Saskatoon.
Your tax dollars, still at work four years later;
Just one of 5 similarly redecorated redecorated government hopper cars spotted yesterday at Aylesbury, SK.

I work around grain elevators. We have started to complain to our employer concerning cars that have totally unacceptable messages on them. Violent, racist, sexually explicit messages contravene the employer’s policy of zero tolerance for anything of this nature. If we continue to see the same messages, after they have been reported, we will print them on t-shirts.
After all, trucks, planes and ships pull into town without any of the same repugnant nonsense painted on the sides. Someone must take responsiblity to stop this nonsense and no one will until people complain.
In the meantime, public caning for a few miscreants to start with and have those caught spend the next however long cleaning up cars and removing the messages.
At least the graffitti was free.
Some of those vandal/artists are pretty good, maybe Saskabush Rail should give ’em a spray can and tell ’em to avoid coarse language.
Call it “harm reduction”.
Kate maybe Sask. should follow the communist mayor of Edmonton’s initiative. He penalizes the victim’s of unwanted graffiti with a hefty fine if they do not repaint and repaint and repaint over the illegal graffiti. How outrageous to even consider caning or holding these “Arteest’s” to account. If only we gave more taxdollars to artists, these poor starving “arteest’s” would have somewhere to spread their gift. Sarcasim Off. Instead of caning they should be chained in the maintenance yard and forced to hand sand off all their garbage and repaint the cars.

This is the 21st century…we don’t chain people up no more no more….
Electronic ancle bracelets….
Even the Gulf Arabs don’t use chains on their African slave labourers anymore…
just back from Athens Greece , the yobs have had their way for years now. the place , the trains everything is graffitti.
Since most of this graffiti is done in urban railyards, I have a better idea. Station snipers in the railyards, armed with paintball guns. Use paintballs loaded with permanent dye, plus a little touch of nitrogen mustard.
Nail any trespassers in the railyards with the loaded paintballs. They would raise a patch of painful blisters where they struck, but wouldn’t be life-threatening. And the miscreants’ skin and clothing would be marked to allow law enforcement and hospital personnel to deduce from whence came the blisters.
I expect the blisters would be punishment enough; nothing like negative reinforcement, instantly applied, to modify bad behavior.
A pox on graffiti vandals. That’s why I didn’t shed any tears over this:
“Montreal graffiti writers mourn train deaths”
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/story/2010/11/01/graffiti-montreal-train.html
The best solution is to fine than force these miscreants to repaint what they despoiled. Tired of the coddling these jerks get.
There is no excuse , you can bet the police know about every one of them.
That or make paint cans sold only to 18 year old & up with their names registered as they buy it.
You can’t sell smokes to 16 year olds , why this stuff when it cost us millions?
I think the Armed Forces and RCMP should conduct sniper training in the CN and CP rail yards after hours. That will solve the graffiti problems tout suite.
“That or make paint cans sold only to 18 year old & up with their names registered as they buy it.”
Then what?
The point of this post is that spending a million bucks on 100 “rolling rail car billboards” was such rock hard stupidity the proposal should never have made it out of committee.
I guess we missed the point when we went on the yobs will paint it for free tangent.
It’s right up there with the millions spent beautifying transit stations. They are just toilets for the dregs anyway so why bother with anything more than bare concrete construction?
In Mark Steyn’s latest book he plays on the theme of “the writing on the wall” from the Book of Daniel” re: King Belshazzar’s feast and graffiti over much of Europe’s famous architecture; the Trevi Fountain, the Colisium, cathedrals etc., In Berlin, graffiti is known by the cognescenti as ‘strassenkultur’, but this isn’t about art it is about ego.
Snipers in the railyards. I’ve long advocated like the specialized paintball, but the touch of nitrogen mustard is a genius addition to the brew. Make sure that the permanent dye flouresces though. If the sniper sees that flourescence, then he switches to a .338 Lapua using Jacketed Hollow Points and puts the SOB down. Hard.
The railcars do need to be painted, otherwise your nice new railcars will rust away. The paint protects the cars from the elements. The tagger(s) who nailed the car in the video are old hands at it, because they know not to paint over the reporting marks and data (left end of car). If they do that, then the railroad has to restore the marks ASAP, thereby “defacing” the “art” the tagger created.
btw, it is only my sense of compassion and mercy that keeps me from going straight to the Lapua.
This is the 21st century…we don’t chain people up no more no more….
We don’t do a lot of things any longer.
If we don’t take immediate decisive and punishing action, there won’t a 22nd century.
There’s paint,…. and then the biggest decal ever.
What are chances the decal company also prints most of the NDP election signs a la adscamatchewan?
To those unfamiliar, the genesis of rail cars owned by the governments of Sask, Alberta, Canada, and the Can. Wheat Board began because the RR Companies refused to purchase rolling stock to haul grain to port at a statutary loss, so government stepped into a role that would have been unnecessary in a properly functioning market.
This kind of thing is about all that comes out of committees.
The troubling thing is I think the graffiti looks better.
Would it be possible to discover which government genius thought this up, and then slap them?
