Ok, so he had a wee bit (tiny) of sympathy for someone who’s been dead 66 years. Big hairy deal. His other sin was to say Jews were a pain in the ass. Millions of Muslims say that every day without much controversy.Jews say the same thing about Muslims.
His real crime ( as the courts will probably show)was being Western/European caucasian instead of a minority group.
Stalin was a far greater tyrant and butcher than Hitler and what the Japanese did to POW’s and conquered subjects during the war also equals a 10 on the savagery scale. The difference between the guilt trips is fading with each generation but we spend untold millions to make sure “never again” remains fresh. Israel will remain our friend and Ally by default since everyone else in that part of the world hates the Christian Infidels. Threatning anyone who has even a tiny slur against the Jews just shows that political correctness has completely run amuck and will cost far more friends than it makes.
The threshhold for insults by caucasians could be raised by a couple notches for everyones benefit. Perhaps then, such simple comments would not wind up in the newspapers or the courts.

The problem with not taking any action is that the “sympathy” would grow to be becoming more mainstream and acceptable. Which in a lot of ways already is.
Not quite sure of the complete politics of Cannes, but to be honest this surprises me to hear this. I would have assumed that these comments at this event wouldn’t be taken so seriously.
Btw, many great films that wouldn’t hit the theaters are only brought to the forefront due to the festival. So all in all, I am happy that they took the stance that they did.

And here’s the kicker. When the speech of idiots is suppressed, they gain credibility. This is because rather than hear the idiocy of their words, the people see the idiots as martyrs.
I don’t think I can really stand Lars von Trier, but I will die (I guess) for his right to be the pretentious, free-speeking doucheb@g that he is.
(Futhermore, nothing he said was remotely pro-Nazi in any reasonable sense of the expression, based on what I just read. But even if it had been…)

If we actually had free speech than I would agree with you, but at the present moment there is a filter, and it isn’t equal and thus the game must be played.

What I find bizarre is that to express intolerance to intolerance is to invite accusations of “nazi”, facism etc….by the real fascists.
But then with a bit of knowledge/understanding of the fascist’s modus operendi it is not bizarre at all but to be expected.
So Muslims in their mist can spew and promote death to Jews that would surpass even the Nazis, and that is ignored. The absence of good judgement and common sense.

There should be no topic that is off limit for discussion, positive or negative. Blacks can call each other niger but whites can not. Blacks can also call whites whatever they feel like and never look over their shoulder for the HRC’s.
Indians can insult whites and lay on supposed guilt trips without reproach and insulting anything Jewish or gay or female can put you in a negative spotlight that could cost you your job or put you in front of a unelected, unaccountable tribunal with the power to make your life miserable. But only if you are white. If you happen to be staight middle class caucasion male you probably know that you are the only group that is monitored constantly for the crime of hurting someone elses feelings. To the best of my knowledge no minority person has ever been hauled in front of any HRC for any reason.
The backlash will be inevitable unless the Government sees the common sense approach to start treating ALL their citizens under the same rules. The best way of dealing with the whole lopsided situation is to shut off funding to all HRC’s. Hurt feelings should never be a issue and there are real courts for real crimes.
