Paramilitary musing on parade,
Swat magazine advises teams to “poach” work from other law enforcement workers to keep up the practice, stating practice on real folks who haven’t actually done a violent crime is cool because we are here to service their need to be ready.
What could go wrong with that attitude?
“Team commanders must raise the profile of their teams. Stay active. Yes, I mean do warrant service and drug raids even if you have to poach the work. First, your team needs the training time under true callout conditions. If all your team does is train, but seldom deploy, you will end up training just to train. You need to train to fight. You already know that.
Second, make SWAT familiar to senior police staff. Everyone fears the unknown. Don’t let SWAT be that unknown. Make deploying SWAT something that is routine, not something only done after much hand-wringing. “Oh, no! You mean we have to call SWAT? Oh, I don’t know, I just don’t know. Really? Call SWAT? Really?””

Glenn Reynolds:
“Everybody’s angry, to judge from my email, about Paul Krugman’s typo-burdened 9/11 screed. Don’t be angry. Understand it for what it is, an admission of impotence from a sad and irrelevant little man. Things haven’t gone the way he wanted lately, his messiah has feet of clay — hell, forget the ‘feet’ part, the clay goes at least waist-high — and it seems likely he’ll have even less reason to like the coming decade than the last, and he’ll certainly have even less influence than he’s had. Thus, he tries to piss all over the people he’s always hated and envied. No surprise there. But no importance, either. You’ll see more and worse from Krugman and his ilk as the left nationally undergoes the kind of crackup it’s already experiencing in Wisconsin. They thought Barack Obama was going to bring back the glory days of liberal hegemony in politics, but it turned out he was their Ghost Dance, their Bear Shirt, a mystically believed-in totem that lacked the power to reverse their onrushing decline, no matter what the shamans claimed.”
These Alaskans have found a way to honour Al Gore.
Ummm, no. That is NOT rush hour. Perhaps the guy was shooting on a Sunday or around 2:00 in the afternoon. If I leave work an hour early, I might see traffic like that. Try leaving around 4:00 or 5:00 and the sky will be darker by the time the car finally gets out of downtown, let alone home.
That was exceptionally weak. !! What a waste of 4 minutes.
I think I’ll do a youtube video of my cactus growing !!
Well, that’s what it says in the title of the video, Dave. I must admit, the streets do look a little…open.
@ EBD, from the academics letter that Glenn Reynolds posted “Sad that so many of my academic readers request anonymity”. Yes, it is sad that debate today in our society is being stifled by the left and academics opposed to the left’s agenda request anonymity. Are we all going to end up like the personalities in Orlando Figes “The Whisperers”.
That was an excellent way to honour Al Gore.

Wheat Board Monopoly: Farmers Vote To Keep Monopoly, Government Vows To Eliminate Board
Scott Edmonds, The Canadian Press
WINNIPEG – Prairie farmers have voted in favour of the Canadian Wheat Board’s monopoly over wheat and barley sales.
Just over 60 per cent of wheat growers and 51 per cent of barley growers voted in favour of maintaining the board’s monopoly. Some 55 per cent of wheat growers and 47 per cent of barley growers voted in the plebiscite.
http://www.thecanadianpress.com/english/online/
James: I missed that point, but traffic is ‘way too sparse for rush hour! I think I saw my truck crossing 9th Ave. 🙂
Neat vid, but there’s no way that was rush hour — no lane reversals and the traffic’s way too light. Try northbound Crowchild Trail at about 5:00 PM south of the river, or the downtown at about the same time.
The Wheat Board vote was rigged. Thank goodness Ritz is going ahead with making the Stalinist era monopoly voluntary and freeing the farmers.
It doesn’t matter what the farmers voted for or against. Disposition of one’s own property is not something that other people have the right to vote on.
Incidentally:
If 55% of wheat growers voted in the poll and 60% of them were in favour, that’s a whopping 33% in favour of the board.
For barley, if 47% of growers voted and 51% voted yes, that’s 23.97% in favour of the board.

Are you assuming that everyone who didn’t vote also didn’t want the board?
Disposition of one’s own property is not something that other people have the right to vote on.
Quite true, however Canadians are subjects with no property rights. That’s a much greater travesty.

“Dianne Feinstein says campaign funds ‘wiped out’ in fraud case”
“Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Monday that her campaign fund was “wiped out,” making her campaign another alleged victim of a campaign treasurer accused of fraud.
Feinstein, a California Democrat, told Politico that the losses from her fund are likely to be in the hundreds of thousands, if not more than $1 million. “I was wiped out too, we don’t know how much,” she told the news site.
Kinde Durkee was arrested on a federal fraud charge this month. She is accused of taking thousands of dollars from the campaigns of various elected officials.
Although many Democratic insiders expressed shock at Durkee’s arrest, it wasn’t the first sign of trouble. When the FBI started investigating Durkee in January, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office and the state Fair Political Practices Commission were already looking at her use of campaign funds.”

“It Takes a Thief”
“The phrase “it takes a thief to catch a thief” is believed to have originated in 17th century England to express the belief that only a person with criminal instincts could anticipate one of his own kind. The idea lives on in the concept of the serial killer profiler, immortalized by the fictional Hannibal Lecter, whose twisted mind is tapped by the FBI to aid them in catching other human monsters.
But why would seasoned politicians entrust their money to a known shady operator and run the risk of having it stolen from them, as campaign treasurer Kinde Durkee may have done to a growing number of Democratic Party stalwarts? NBC Los Angeles reports that Diane Feinstein, who had $5 million in her campaign fund the last time she looked, was “wiped out” by Durkee. “Feinstein is one of an unknown number of elected officials who allegedly lost money courtesy a Democratic campaign accountant named Kinde Durkee.” The list of victims appears to be growing.”

“Quite true, however Canadians are subjects with no property rights. That’s a much greater travesty.”
But we do have property rights. We are endowed with property rights by our creator. They are inalienable. Just because our government doesn’t recognize them does not change that fact. Governments don’t exist to hand out rights, they exist to protect the rights we have by virue of being human. If they are not doing that, we are well within our rights to make them, or try another system of government.

“When dust settles, how much of the world will China own?”
“The world’s banker”
“One wonders what the world will look like when the music stops.”
“China, the economic engine of the post-recession era, has already been on a buying spree, striking deals around the world largely in the resources sector. It’s also the biggest foreign holder of America’s debt, and has helped buoy other countries and companies. Now, it it’s also poised to come to Rome’s aid as Italy becomes the latest victim of Europe’s debt crisis.
Italy confirmed today that Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti met this month with Chinese officials, who hold massive foreign exchange reserves, to drum up support for its bonds. It’s not clear how much of a difference this will make to Italy, but it’s yet another signal of China’s increasing importance in a world in turmoil.
“News that Beijing and Rome were in talks over the potential purchase of Italian debt inspired a late 200-point recovery in the Dow Jones on Monday, with U.K. shares pencilling in sharp gains at the open as a result,” said Ben Critchley, sales trader at IG Index.
“This came – but also evaporated very quickly. There is the feeling that we have seen these stories before during the first stages of the Greek crisis, as well as speculation that the amounts earmarked for purchase are not that material.”

“It doesn’t matter what the farmers voted for or against. Disposition of one’s own property is not something that other people have the right to vote on.”
That right there is the heart of the matter. Those who don’t want to sell through the board should not be forced to do so by others under threat of imprisonment when what they are selling is their own property. If the wheat board was so bloody fantastic they should be able to compete on the open market to buy farmers’ grain. Eastern farmers don’t have to put up with this garbage and neither should we – this isn’t a communist country where people are just serfs working for the Man.
Petra nails it. And that’s partly why it must be abolished.
If I could recommend a book – “Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout” (The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist), by Patrick Moore. I thought the chapter where he discusses climate change was one of the most effective rebuttals to the warmist point of view I have ever read. An excellent read.

I must admit it doesn’t look at all like rush hour. On the other hand, the early shots are from streets which don’t carry traffic at any hour, and the Centre Street and downtown shots might be from some very unusual day, or from some time like 9:00 or 5:30 which would be peak time in Toronto but not here (although they look like midday). It can sometimes be like that. You just don’t know what the traffic’s going to do in this town. When it flows, it really flows. And when it doesn’t…
If the point is supposed to be that driving in Calgary is easy, well, go ahead and believe it, but boy, are you in for a jolt when you get here.
Rush hour in Calgary appears to be a blatant fraud, likely filmed late-morning or on a week-end.
Reality is much different, what with C-Train issues (4 deaths in the last month) clogging intersections and innumerable car collisions on major thoroughfares. (Deerfoot 500 and Crowchild Trail). Impossible for infrastructure construction to keep up with the demand – Calgary’s centralized urban model (and most others) is hopelessly dysfunctional.
The video is definitely NOT rush hour in Calgary, and yes I cant get SUNNEWS on line either.
Dear Editor,
“In one of the more ominous developments, women seem to be losing interest in many newsstand titles traditionally aimed at them, which are responsible for a large share of total newsstand sales.”

“Magazine Newsstand Sales Halved from 2001-2011 (Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)”
“Media Daily News ^ | September 13, 2011 | Erik Sass”
“The combined newsstand sales of 68 major American magazines declined by nearly half from 2001-2011, a MediaPost analysis of Audit Bureau of Circulations data revealed.
According to ABC FAS-FAX circulation reports, this group of leading weekly and monthly magazines saw total average newsstand sales plunge from 22,019,953 in the six-month period ending June 2001 to 11,562,028 in the six-month period ending June 2011 — a 47.5% decline over the course of the decade.
Total newsstand sales have gradually collapsed over the last 10 years, accelerating in recent years in response to broader economic pressures. Newsstand sales have declined steadily, dropping every single year from 2001-2011. After slowly declining from 22 million in 2001 to just over 17 million in 2007, shedding 23% over the course of seven years, the rate of loss increased from 2008 to 2011 — shedding another 32% in just four years.”

“‘Green’ aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. ‘These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets,’ the authors write.”
Nope, they’re not kidding; they mention “District 9” as an influence on their conclusions.
The headline on CBC.Ca this AM reads: “B.C. child abduction suspect caught in Alberta”
Very misleading. Sparwood BC (where the abduction took place) and Crowsnest (where the alleged abductor was caught) are about 10 miles apart.
The mounties got him, That’s what counts.
maz2 — I wonder how much of the newsstand sales decline can be attributed to e-readers like iPad.

Lessons from the embassy takeover
But until the weekend, Israel’s Left insisted there was a distinction between the lawless Sinai and the more orderly situation in Cairo. They argued that all that was needed to calm the situation in Sinai was for the military junta to assert its authority in Sinai as it does in the rest of Egypt. Hence, the Left argued that it is in Israel’s interest to amend the peace treaty and allow the Egyptian military to remilitarize the Sinai.
Since the weekend, these claims have been notably absent from the discourse. After the Egyptian military allowed the mob to take over the embassy, residual leftist faith in the junta’s moderation and commitment to the peace with Israel is swiftly evaporating.
