In tonight’s Tips music, from September 1939, Dame Vera Lynn, DBE, sings the stirring and patriotic There’ll Always Be an England, which is followed by a full-hearted choral rendition of God Save The Queen.
Dedicated to our British friends who are continuing to fight the good fight on behalf of their country.

That is no longer a rhetorical question.

Hopefully Dame Vera Lynn, DBE, is right, but it does appear to be in doubt in the long run. England is being destroyed from within.
One can buy cds of her music.
Dame Vera Lynn was a favourite of my grandfather’s.
Talk about an enduring career.

The RAF soultion for rigid height control as night without radio altimiters was intersecting lights
he second problem was determining the aircraft’s altitude, as the barometric altimeters then in use lacked sufficient accuracy. Two spotlights were mounted, one under the aircraft’s nose and the other under the fuselage, so that at the correct height their light beams would converge on the surface of the water. The crews practised at the Eyebrook Reservoir, in Leicestershire/Rutland, Abberton Reservoir near Colchester, Derwent Reservoir, and Fleet Lagoon on Chesil Beach. Wallis’ bomb itself was first tested at the Elan Valley Reservoirs.

Met two pilots that flew them in Europe and the Burma.
The brit flying in Europe swore by them with a couple of kills on V1’s
However;
The brit pilots in tropical countries cringed at them as they would start rotting right after they showed up due to the high humidity. Repairing the wooden airframe was a nightmare as the glue wouldn’t set up properly. According to him serviceability was a nightmare

Jim Prentice, who shared a campfire with *David Suzuki*… at least for a photo op….was contemplating bringing in a cap and trade system when he was federal Minister of the Environment. He apparently bought the program hook line and sinker.
“That would likely result in ‘significant’ money being transferred from Alberta to other parts of the country, a 2007 report by CIBC World Markets showed.”

“If Canada follows through on plans to crack down on miscreant youth, it’ll be one of the few jurisdictions in the world heading in that direction.
And the tough-on-crime approach in the face of contrary evidence is bemusing international observers.
Judges, criminologists and policy-makers in the United States, Britain and Australia – countries whose systems, for the most part, closely resemble Canada’s – can’t figure out why this country is planning to shift toward a jail-intensive approach. Everyone else seems to be doing the opposite, not for ideological reasons, but because evidence shows it works.”

“David Cameron: It’s time for a zero tolerance approach to street crime”
“David Cameron today tells the police to take a “zero tolerance” approach to street crime in the wake of the worst rioting to hit mainland Britain in 30 years.”
“The Prime Minister uses an interview with The Sunday Telegraph to promise a series of tough measures, to be unveiled in the coming months, to fight crime and reclaim the streets from rioters, looters and gangs.
He pledges to support “zero tolerance” — a tough system of policing first popularised in the US which sees even minor offences prosecuted vigorously to send out the message that no form of law-breaking will be tolerated.”

I didn’t think it was appropriate for chief justices to wade into political comment–at least while she’s still holding her job.

“JFK’s Berlin blunder”
“Fifty years ago, a metaphor became concrete. Beginning on Aug. 13, 1961, along West Berlin’s 27-mile border, the Iron Curtain became tangible in a wall of precast slabs of concrete. It came down 22 years ago, but the story of how it rose, as told in Frederick Kempe’s book Berlin 1961, compels an unflattering assessment of John Kennedy. His serial blunders that year made it the most incompetent first year of any presidency.
In a State of the Union address just 10 days after his inauguration, Kennedy seemed exhilarated by hysteria. He said that “in this brief 10-day period” he had been “staggered” by “the harsh enormity” of the “trials” ahead:
“Each day the crises multiply. Each day their solution grows more difficult. Each day we draw nearer the hour of maximum danger, as … hostile forces grow stronger … Our analyses over the last 10 days make it clear that … the tide of events has been running out.” Lunging for an equivalence with Lincoln, Kennedy said that during his term Americans would learn whether a nation such as ours “can endure.”
Actually, since Election Day he had learned that the “missile gap” he had accused President Eisenhower of allowing to develop was fictitious.”

“Local Communities and Carbon Dioxide Emissions”
“Responsibility for reducing carbon dioxide emissions is falling to cities, municipalities and regional districts because wider efforts during the last 30 years to ameliorate the threat of global climate change are not working. Multiple negotiations sponsored by the United Nation’s have been unsuccessful. Developing nations such as China, India and Brazil are determined to follow the destructive example of industrialized countries which, in turn, are reluctant to risk economic advantage by reducing their emissions.
Canada, under the Harper government, is so disconnected from climate science that it seems to live in parallel and separate universe, one that systematically obstructs reduction efforts, assiduously suppresses climate change discussions, silences climatologists, shrinks relevant federal research programs, pushes for greater oil and gas production, and abets coal exports. BC’s government is only marginally better.”

“UNHINGED Al Gore’s tantrum unbecoming of stature”
“Al Gore has good reason to be so angry. But it’s not the reason you might think.
At the Aspen Institute last week, the former vice president, behaving like anything but, unleashed an obscenity laced tirade against those who aren’t buying what he’s selling: global warming. The number of scientists moving into the skeptic ranks regarding manmade climate change is growing.
“They pay pseudo-scientists to pretend to be scientists to put out the message: ‘This climate thing, it’s nonsense. Man-made CO2 doesn’t trap heat. It may be volcanoes.’ Bull****! ‘It may be sun spots.’ Bull****! ‘It’s not getting warmer.’ Bull****!”
Sounds like someone’s losing an argument.
He complained, “There’s no longer a shared reality on an issue like climate, even though the very existence of our civilization is threatened.”
Gore doesn’t live like the very existence of our civilization is threatened. With his many mansions, his fleet of vehicles and his travels aboard private jets, he leaves the carbon footprint of a small city. Yet he claims to live a “carbon-neutral” lifestyle because he pays poor people in Third World countries to plant trees. That’s a luxury reserved for the wealthy, like Gore, with guilty consciences to pacify over their conspicuous consumption.
He’s not alone. Every global climate summit has been an orgy of excess that exposed the hypocrisy of all those hoping to cash in on global warming panic.
Civilization is not threatened, but Gore’s fortune may be. He is heavily invested in green technology and carbon trading. But the green market is just not performing. So he’s beginning to sound deranged.”

rita @ 10:44 a.m.: “I didn’t think it was appropriate for chief justices to wade into political comment–at least while she’s still holding her job.”
They’re not supposed to, but they do it all the time anyway. Many judgments of the Supreme Court make comments about social programs, for example, written by former judges like Bertha Wilson and Claire L’Heureux-Dube. They’ve also upheld mandatory retirement based more on economic considerations (and incorrect ones too) than what they perceive to be rights.
