North Carolina natives Scotty Wiseman and Myrtle Cooper were a husband and wife duo who performed in the 30s, 40s, and 50s as Lulu Belle & Scotty. In tonight’s selection, written by Wiseman in 1952, a rather straightforward HUAC-era anti-Communist song, replete with spies and sneaky domestic traitors, turns into an unapologetic protest against the American federal government’s intrusiveness (“Let the government run its business and let me run my own”) and out of control spending (“Our national debt is monster size and grown’ every day / Our children’s children, still unborn, are gonna have to pay”).

    A gun collector who was arrested outside his east-end apartment during a midnight raid has launched a $6.5-million lawsuit against the Toronto police, his former landlords and a tipster.
    Peter Sedge, 59, said he was removed from his Beaches home at gunpoint wearing only his underwear during the May, 2008, seizure of about 120 legally collected firearms.

Check this out: the large numbers of civic-minded people who came out to clean up the mess left by British rioters are excoriated – they’re practically the face of evil – in this post at a British site called “University For Strategic Optimism.” The author, Dr. Sofia Himmelblau, attacks the “strikingly middle-class, broadly white efforts to sweep issues of inequality under the carpet of a simulated…photo-op.”
    This “doughty bunch of volunteer cleaners” are “the substitution for a non-existent community…”, and –

    “If (the community) does exist…(it) certainly appears to be one that cannot operate other than by the exclusion of certain individuals, by the rhetorical and indeed physical expulsion of non-citizens and ‘feral rats’ from within its midst. Such a community, predicated upon exclusion, was how Carl Schitt defined society (and he was a Nazi). This community therefore, that comes together over their dustpan and brushes only does so in the specific exclusion of their Other…..By the symbolic cleaning, cleansing and casting out of the rioters from the community, the sweepers appear to enact the closest thing to popular fascism that we have seen on the streets of certain ‘leafy’ bits of London for years.” (emph. mine)

    Read the comments, too, and Dr. Himmelblau’s hyperventilating victim routine in her postcript(s), after her post drew a lot more attention than she was used to or would have liked.

  11. EBD @ 11:12, in her post Dr. Sofia Himmelblau said “only the radical redistribution of wealth and a society not defined around the individual accumulation of property is going to do that”. My, my, she is quite the little communist.

    “So shocking were the riots, so at odds with our self-image as a calm and orderly people, that we naturally want an explanation commensurate with the magnitude of events. The idea that the disturbances were nothing more than spur-of-the-moment criminality seems inadequate. We demand deeper causes. If we are on the Left, we blame poverty, racism or police brutality. If we are on the Right, we blame failures in welfare and education that have produced a generation with no sense of responsibility.

While potentially interesting, they don’t help us to understand the suddenness or the scale of the unrest.     Costa Rica is a main transit point for drugs being imported into N. America. Costa Rica does not have a military and so rely on their police force to enforce the laws of the land.
    The police are notoriously underpaid and undertrained. I believe this move by Harper is intended to beef up not only the quality but quantity on police recruits.
    Whether or not it’s a good idea is another topic entirely.

A week ago I released my new book — the usual doom’n’gloom stuff — and, just as the sensible prudent moderate chaps were about to dismiss it as hysterical and alarmist, Standard & Poor’s went and downgraded the United States from its AAA rating for the first time in history. Obligingly enough they downgraded it to AA+, which happens to be the initials of my book: After America. Okay, there’s not a lot of “+” in that, but you can’t have everything.

  25. The Prime Minister just returned from Honduras on the final leg of his trip through Latin America.
    The CBC’s Terry Milewski is already dissing Harper’s trade agreement with Honduras, characterizing the country as a brutal human rights abuser, etc.
    The Left is mad as hell because Honduras successfully resisted a Hugo Chavez sponsored Marxist coup against the Honduran constitution in 2009 (the nincompoop Obama administration also supported the coup — see http://ricardostories.wetpaint.com/page/Hillary%27s+man+under+attack+from+Zionist+ray+guns).
    The coup by ex-President Zelaya was avoided with a “counter-coup” by order of the Supreme Court and almost unanimous support from Honduras’ democratically-elected Legislature — the Honduran military successfully intervened by order of the courts and the legislature to defend the free democratic constitution, and new elections were immediately called.
    Of course the CBC and its minions would never publish the truth about this, instead they focussed on a tiny group of Honduran Marxist demonstrators against Harper because he supports the democratic government there (Canada was in fact instrumental in the negotiations back in 2009 to restore democracy to Honduras).
