  1. Excerpt from David Warren’s recent column Tale of two crises:
“When I was writing for this paper from England at the end of the last century (it now seems such a long time ago), I said that of all the countries I had ever revisited, England was the one most changed. The England where I had lived in the 1970s still had points of connection with previous Englands. Thanks to postwar socialism, it was largely dysfunctional. But it seemed that it had accumulated enough moral and material capital, over the centuries, to continue declining for another hundred years.
“I wasn’t present through most of the Thatcher period, during which the British economy recovered, almost miraculously. ‘Markets were freed,’ but nothing was done to address the moral decay, compounded by massive immigration, and the segregating effects of ‘multiculturalism.’ Returning after the Thatcher era, I was struck by the contrast of economic recovery, with continued moral dissolution.
“London itself, in the sense of the buildings, was still there, but it seemed the people had left, and been replaced by these incredibly wealthy savages, who were also fashionistas and foodies.
“The stunning change was in public manners…”
    The whole thing here.

  2. In that global riot and protest roundup in one of Kate’s threads yesterday (Glenn Beck – crazy one?) mention was made of protests in Israel: for everything from free education from age 3 months (why not from birth!?), rent control, property price control, etc. What’s fascinating is that Israel almost COMPLETELY escaped the economic meltdown of 2008.
A day earlier I had this fascinating piece on Israeli Marxism.
It is worse than I thought.
As putative hardliner Netanyahu has signaled that he might re-consider the Auschwitz borders (1949 armistice lines which were never borders) I’m getting pretty close to giving up worrying about Israel which seems intent on committing national suicide.

  3. EBD: Another really beautiful piece by Sultan Knish for you (and others?)”
    A Warrior’s Tale.
I haven’t had time yet but I’m betting that his stuff on the UK riots (currently at the top of the blog) will be a good supplement to David Thompson’s stuff, which I haven’t got around to yet either.

  4. Black Mamba
I always wanted to see Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch get married, think about how far we would be ahead on the Angry Birds issue.

  5. Hey Al,
With Bush gone, Harper is a convenient foreign policy whipping boy for the Guardian and Washington Post. Do you really believe he threw a tantrum and locked himself in a bathroom? And the Post article cites a Canadian political blog that I’ve never heard of (so it’s probably a left blog) as a source.
Canada and Brazil aren’t exactly big pals on the economic front, and Dilma and Steve are ideologically further apart than Bush and Castro. The usual suspects were also squealing today about how we’re trading with Columbia and Honduras which prompted a solid smackdown from Harper. I guess they’re resorting to making up funny stories out of desperation.
But it’s easier to prance around as a cosmopolitan internationalist than choosing a side. I still think Dilma belongs on a wanted poster and not a ballot.

  6. syncro – This is Extreme Language Warning stuff, but it’s only about three minutes total and the bit about Oscar the Grouch, one minute in, is one of the funniest things ever.

  7. Re. Jason Kenney’s response to Amnesty International’s criticism re. the deportation of certain war criminals:
    By Terry Glavin:
“That’s from a letter by Jason Kenney, Minister of Immigration, Citizenship and Multiculturalism, to Amnesty International, once an internationally-respected and venerable human rights organization, but these days, not so much.
To merely notice this grimly funny paradox is to risk being subjected to demands to surrender all claim to independence of thought, progressive political views, proletarian solidarity, non-Zionism, membership in Mountain Equipment Co-op and all such forms of fashionable virtue. I notice it anyway. Good one, Minister Kenney. More like that, please.”

  10. To add to the other great commentary on the British riots, Theodore Dalrymple’s “”British Degeneracy on Parade: The riots should surprise no one who’s been paying attention.”
… To have spotted [the ferocious criminality of the rioters] required no great perspicacity on my part; rather, it took a peculiar cowardly blindness, one regularly displayed by the British intelligentsia and political class, not to see it and not to realize its significance. There is nothing that an intellectual less likes to change than his mind, or a politician his policy [emphasis mine].” …

  11. Thanks, MND, for the powerful article by Sultan Knish (Daniel Greenfield) on what happens when a people lose their very own story (their Warrior’s Tale), which we’ve done in the West.
Our story, the one that has kept us strong (and moral) is the Judeo-Christian one. It is our warrior’s tale. It is the story that put watchmen on the watchtowers of history. It is the story that mandated that we love ourselves — but, more than that, and in order to nobly and worthily love ourselves, we needed to love our neighbours, as well, to do good to those that hate us, to feed and clothe the widows and orphans, to follow the Man who walked on the water and gave His life for the life of the world.
Today, that story has been trashed. And, it’s a tragedy for all mankind.
    Greenfield:
… The warrior’s tale tells each generation that they stand on the wall against a hostile world. And that the wall is made not of stones, but of their virtues. Their courage, their integrity and their craft. Theirs is the wall and they are the wall– and if they should fail, then it will fail. And the land and the people will be swept away.
What happens to a people who forget the warrior’s tale and stop telling it around their campfires? Worse , what of a people who are taught to despise the figure of the warrior and what he represents? They will not lose their courage, not all of it. But they will lose the direction of that courage. It will become a sudden unexplained virtue that rises to them out of the depths of danger. And their wall will fail. …
    Kyrie eleison.

  13. Online poll over at SunTV (bottom right):
    http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/
An online petition is urging Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie to get married. What do you think?
    Support
    Oppose
You’ve gotta be kidding me, they’re puppets!
So far, the “You’ve gotta be kidding me, they’re puppets!” is winning at 63%.
I voted “Oppose,” because even though Ernie and Bert are only puppets, we live in such dysfunctional times that puppets’ marrying would be taken utterly seriously.
Kids watching Sesame Street would be indoctrinated into gay sex/gay marriage in just the flick of a hand (Ernie turning to Bert, Bert turning to Ernie). YUK.

In Ontario, gloomy skies for solar power”
“Silfab Ontario has been making solar panels for barely four months in a refurbished factory west of Toronto, but already employees are nervous about the security of their jobs.
Plans to hire more people and expand production are on hold as demand for solar parts wavers and stock sits unsold. Several companies who install solar panels have been unable to pay for their orders because they’re waiting for assurances the power projects will be connected to Ontario’s electricity grid. A backup in the approvals process has brought the fledgling industry almost to a standstill.”

  17. The Warrior’s Tale…I agreed with much of it and yet, it left me saddened. How many times have we persuaded our young men (yes it has been mostly men) to put their lives on the line for some ideal when in reality, the underlying purposes were not so high flown. We appeal to what is noble, generous and brave while others profit and engineer situations for their own benefit. We lend our soldiers to serve in outside conflicts and don’t give them the mandate and the resources to do the job. I’m a cynic. Idealism troubles me. It’s very easy to take advantage of a pure heart.

The CEO of the company lobbying to build a pipeline bringing Canadian oil sands to Gulf Coast refiners has a warning for green groups opposing the project: The oil sands will be developed with or without expanded U.S. imports.
TransCanada CEO Russ Girling spoke to Platts as the State Department is mulling whether to approve the company’s $7 billion, 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline – a project that’s drawing vigorous opposition from environmental groups.
“Make no mistake, that resource is getting developed. It’s the single-greatest driver of the Canadian economy. If the US doesn’t want the oil, then somebody else will,” he told the energy news service.
Girling also said: “It’s a question of whether you want Canadian oil or you want oil from other places around the globe that don’t necessarily share the values which would include environmental protection, protecting rights of workers and other things that Canada strongly stands behind.”
Canada is the biggest supplier of oil to the United States.”
