Portraits Of Honour

Phil writes from Ottawa;

I met a gentleman in the Calgary airport yesterday who mentioned the
Portraits of Honour project now touring Canada. Essentially it’s a
large 50′ mural with painted portraits of our fallen soldiers with
a goal to raise funds for troop support.
Afterwards I thought about you and SDA nation.
It has already received plenty of media attention and their website
http://www.portraitsofhonour.com/ with a 9 minute video at the bottom
clearly explains the background and the goal of the project.

There are four stops scheduled for Saskatchewan in August. Check it out.

  1. It passed through the Okanagan last week . . . I didn’t get to see it while there but it got huge play on local TV/media.

  2. “Our troops need your financial support!
Many of our brave soldiers, sailors and aircrew have returned physically injured. Thousands more will return to suffer the emotional stress of combat for years to come. And many will not come home alive.
Each man and woman who proudly wears the uniform of the Canadian Forces made the choice to protect and care for those who needed their help. Now it’s time for Canadians to make a choice … a choice to protect and care for the soldiers, sailors, aircrew, and their families who now need our help.
The Portraits of Honour National Tour has the potential to raise millions of dollars to financially assist the troops and families who need help.”
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON! I voted Conservative in the expectation that our troops would be taken care of, to their dying day if that’s required.
While I laud the efforts of this tour, our troops should NOT have to depend on the equivalent of a travelling Salvation Army for support.
Allah almighty,do any of the politicians really give a damn about the soldiers they send to THEIR cause du jour? Colour me pissed off!
My MP will be receiving a strongly worded E-mail on this one,and later this month the Conservative bigwig guest star will hear from me at a Party barbecue here.
This bullshit has been going on since the day World War One ended! It’s about goddamned time it stopped!
Mr.Harper: Take ALL the funds for arts grants and give it to the soldiers if you’re THAT short of money.

  3. This is in some ways a good start, but it is also rather too sobby and
American. There must be respect for soldiers, sailors and airmen
who have suffered and died in our wars, but we should not forget
Patton’s dictum that the point of war is not to die bravely for your
country, “dulce et decorum est pro patria mori” notwithstanding,
but rather to make the other son of a bitch (Patton’s words) die
for his country. Canadian forces have been good at that, and that is really what should hold centre stage.
Britain, Canada etc. don’t award Purple Hearts, because getting wounded is not the point of war. Being
wounded and still achieving something, is meritorious.
It is well to commemorate the Canadians who were wounded and
who were killed in Afghanistan, but I would like to commemorate
Canadian successes in Afghanistan – and earlier. All Canadians, for example,
should know about the battle of Vimy Ridge, where Canadian forces displaced well dug in
German forces, who had already killed many thousands of British and French forces
who had unsuccessfully attempted the same thing. Canadian losses were about 5000 (compare this with total
losses in Afstan), and this was LIGHT for the First World War. And that should be known as well.

  4. John Lewis – You make some valid points, particularly the poorly disseminated fact of how Canadian troops so effectively destroy their enemy, but Portraits of Honour can not harm the troops in any way, as far as I can see, and if it does anything beneficial for them, then it’s certainly worth it.
