The Financial Post had a great article written by Claudia Cattaneo on the efforts to make the Canadian Wheat Board voluntary. One of the board members, Jeff Nielsen, one of two board members advocating freeing farmers to sell their wheat to whomever they want to, is interviewed extensively for this article.
http://business.financialpost.com/2011/07/23/farmers-covet-control-as-wheat-board-monopoly-set-to-end/
It is a lengthy article, but is very good at explaining some of the history of the CWB. One important statement says “The CWB was established in 1935 by the Conservative government of R.B. Bennett. At first, the board was voluntary and operated alongside the Grain Exchange in a dual market. It became compulsory in 1943, when Ottawa feared it would not have sufficient wheat to meet its commitment to Britain during the war.”

Rest in peace Amy.
Liveleak has Anders Behring Breivik’s rather slickly produced video Manifesto. You’ll likely have to watch it full-screen to make the text legible.
He was obviously intelligent, and he loved his culture and his country. His methods, obviously, were unsound.
Another case of not so settled science. They have been lying to us for years.
This week a meta-analysis of seven studies involving a total of 6,250 subjects in the American Journal of Hypertension found no strong evidence that cutting salt intake reduces the risk for heart attacks, strokes or death in people with normal or high blood pressure.

“His methods, obviously, were unsound.”
but with a lot of forethought, this why he was able to do so much damage. And with the socialist stupidity in Norway, he’ll be free in 21 years. After spending 21 years with nothing but time on his hands he may come up with a plan that would make this time look like child’s play!!
Once again..Evil is as evil does…
I’m sure he’ll be watched closely when he gets out, Gym.

“Federal Employees who work at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Small Business Administration, or more than a dozen other government agencies ‘are more likely to die of natural causes than get laid off or fired.’
“Death is the ‘primary threat’ to their job security. The federal government fired only about one-half of one percent of its entire workforce last year. In the private sector, the percentage of workers who get fired for ‘poor performance’ is 5 times higher.
“How much do you get paid with that kind of job security? Twice as much as private sector counterparts.”
Many Norwegians have pointed out that they have a “dangerous offender” system where his case will be reviewed after 21 years with the option of continued incarceration in 5 year increments indefinitely.
Good to know, dwright. Mass-murdering 90 innocents should certainly be enough to qualify one as a dangerous offender.

“In Ahmadis’s desert city, Pakistan closes in on
group it declared non-Muslim”
“At the office of what claims to be one of Pakistan’s oldest newspapers, workers scan copy for words it is not allowed to use — words like Muslim and Islam. “The government is constantly monitoring this publication to make sure none of these words are published,” explains our guide during a visit to the offices of al Fazl, the newspaper of the Ahmadiyya sect in Pakistan.
This is Rabwah, the town the Ahmadis built when they fled the killings of Muslims in India at Partition in 1947, and believing themselves guided by God, chose a barren stretch of land where they hoped to make the Punjab desert bloom. Affluent and well-educated, they started out camping in tents and mud huts near the river and the railway line. Now they have a town of some 60,000 people, a jumble of one- and two-storey buildings, along with an Olympic size swimming pool, a fire service and a world class heart institute.
Yet declared by the state in the 1970s to be non-Muslims, they face increasing threats of violence across Pakistan as the country strained by a weakening economy, an Islamist insurgency and internecine political feuds, fractures down sectarian and ethnic lines.
“The situation is getting worse and worse,” says Mirza Khurshid Ahmed, amir of the Ahmadi community in Pakistan. “The level of religious intolerance has increased considerably during the last 10 years.”
The town, renamed Chenabnagar by the state government since “Rabwah” comes from a verse in the Koran, is now retreating behind high walls and razor wire, awaiting the suicide bombers and fedayeen gunmen who police tell them are plotting attacks. Last May, 86 people were killed in two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore, capital of Punjab; others were attacked elsewhere in the province. Many fled to Rabwah where the community gives them cheap housing and financial support.

“1936: Now that was a heat wave — hundreds died as temperatures soared to 44 C”
“Think it’s hot out there? You obviously didn’t live through the heat wave of 1936.
What’s broadly regarded as the worst heat wave in North America’s modern history began in late June of that year in the American southwest and seeped into Canada during the first week of July. For 13 days, from July 5 to July 17, it oppressed — and sometimes killed — Depression-era Canadians from southern Alberta to the Ontario-Quebec border.
Seventy-five years later, temperature records set during that scorching summer still stand in Ontario, Manitoba and 14 American states. “That’s really still the granddaddy one of them all,” says David Phillips, Environment Canada’s senior climatologist.
Ottawa, situated on the periphery of the Big Heat’s range, escaped its worst effects. That year in Ottawa, temperatures topped 31 C five times between July 7 and July 12, peaking at 35.6 C on July 10.
Other parts of the province were less fortunate.
Toronto endured a 10-day stretch when highs reached 30 C or more, with nary a drop of rain. For three days running, from July 8 to July 10, highs in the city topped out at the same knee-buckling temperature: 40.6 C. That’s 105 Fahrenheit.”

You’ve gotta wonder where the grown ups were while all of these teens were being slaughtered. Was no one in charge?
In Leftard Utopias, it seems that the kids are on their own to figure it out themselves or to get blown away. Was there no adult to step up to the plate, to offer protection, to get help — or is it that there just weren’t any “adults” anywhere around? ‘Just 30-, 40-, 50-year-old juveniles?
Why do we have SWAT teams? They were useless in the Montreal shootings (“we wanted it to be safe before we went in”) – wait, aren’t these guys wearing body armour, face shields and carrying 9mm full auto weapons?
My thought was that a police assault to stop a madman who was killing people was their raison d’etre.
Some good commentary and analysis of the Norway attacks at Mark Humphrey’s site
This sadistic, barbaric attack must be one of the strangest terror attacks ever. One would never think, from the killer’s online comments, that he was a mass murderer in waiting.
The killer was right-wing and anti-jihad, yes, but he was not a neo-Nazi (he was pro-Israel) or a white supremacist (he opposed the BNP because they are racist). He was Christian, but not a fanatic (he was pro-gay).
In fact he was apparently like me – liberal right. He was anti-racist, pro-gay and pro-Israel. So how on earth did someone like that become a terrorist against the West?

PP,there ARE rules of engagement and Union agreements that have to be lived up to.
You can’t have a dues-paying SWAT team member rush into a building wherein is an armed person, better to block all the doorways so he/she can’t escape, then negotiate a surrender.

Gives you an idea of how Hollywood has all but destroyed its creative side.
When ‘Midnight’ Struck Orson Welles’ Career
Terry Teachout writes in the Wall Street Journal that Chimes at Midnight, released in 1965, just as Orson Welles’ career as a film director would go into a long period of freefall, is being re-released in a “brand-new, never-seen-before restoration” next month. As Teachout writes, this restoration covers a multitude of cinematic sins:
The reason it had to be restored is that “Chimes at Midnight” was made independently and on the cheap, for by 1965 Mr. Welles had so antagonized the Hollywood establishment that no major studio would have anything to do with him. As a result, “Chimes at Midnight” was shot, edited and dubbed under substandard conditions, and the prints that have circulated since the film’s original release are all of low quality.

Persons with cynical instincts might find amusement with the way the press has handled the news. In some reports announcing that the shooter was a “blonde-blue-eyed” nationalist etc the text turns suddenly to discussion of islamic militants and al-Quada bombings as if they just couldn’t part with their initial intepretations [or needed filler]
Two things are notable —
One “once media outlets noted that the suspect was not Muslim, they disassociated connections between the suspect’s beliefs and his alleged violent actions.”
Two, in line with the usual assumption that terrorist is something done by muslims, even the respectable press managed to somehow keep the light shining in that direction —
// consider this New York Times article blaming the failure of multiculturalism. Or, look at this Atlantic article, which describes such racist terrorism as a “mutation of jihad” – that is “the spread of the ‘jihad’ mentality to anti-immigrant and racist groups”. You begin to get the picture. The idea to find some way in which all of this is still the fault of Muslim immigrants. The logic will be: the fascists express legitimate grievances, but go too far. //
[Or, as EBD noted, a patriot who loved his country but using “unsound” methods. EBD’s method being a bit of nostalgia for “old Norway”]
Yet reading the killer’s manifesto, this is simply Eurabia theory turned into action [with a generaous helping of plagiarism from the unibomber]. Anyone heard from Steyn?

“Norway shooting: the opening of a wound that may never heal
Telegraph.co.uk – Neil Tweedie – 57 minutes ago
If countries were subject to psychological profiling Norway would doubtless hold the title of most well-adjusted society. This is – was – a relaxed place, at ease with itself and its place in the world.”
Thank you, Leslie.
On CTV news this evening, Helge Luras, an advisor with the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, said that multiculturalism was rarely discussed in Norway and that immigration policies were made by politicians without consulting “the people.” I was surprised to hear this — not because it’s not true but because it was said by a Norwegian on Canadian television. Luras also said that “a significant number of Norwegians would find some sympathy” with “part of” Breivik’s message.
http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/20110724/norway-shooting-investigation-110724/
I suspect there might be more latitude for this discussion now, a discussion that should never have been deep-sixed in the first place.
In too many countries, those who make decisions to bring in massive numbers of immigrants don’t have to live with the consequences. They live in neighbourhoods far from the madding crowd or in gated communities from which “the idea of multiculturalism” is lovely and egalitarian. How would they know? They often seem both unaware of and uninterested in knowing how massive influxes of immigrants over a relatively short period of time — especially if they have no intention of assimilating into their host culture — can negatively impact the day-to-day lives of ordinary citizens.
These attacks by Anders Behring Breivik, as a way of getting the Norwegian people to wake up, however, are unconscionable; no agenda, regardless of how relevant and/or silenced, can justify this carnage of human life. My heart goes out to the loved ones of those who lost their lives on Friday.
Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord.
And may light perpetual shine upon them.
Amen, batb.
The Red “far left” socialists and the Brown “far right” socialists continue their death struggle as to which brother will be dominant in Europe.
Their brotherly blood feud is stalled on the question: What to do about AlMoh?

Brother Right has now lashed out/bloodied Brother Left.
