“Crisis in the EU”
“Damage Control Isn’t Good Enough to Save Europe”
“With its ongoing bailout strife and Denmark’s recent decision to erect border controls, the EU is mired in the biggest crisis yet. As leader of the EU’s most powerful country, it’s high time for Angela Merkel to breathe new life into the idea of a united Europe.”
“The photo has been reprinted enough to be branded into the collective memories of Germany and France. It shows Helmut Kohl and Francois Mitterand standing hand-in-hand during a 1984 commemoration ceremony at Verdun. Their gesture illustrates the astounding reconciliation that took place between their respective nations after two world wars. Today, its emotionalism is both moving and oddly foreign.
Back then, what would ultimately become the European Union was more than just a body for administering financial transfers between member countries. When people talked about “Europe,” they focused on the big issues: open borders, international understanding, war and peace. These weren’t just empty words but, instead, things that statesmen like Kohl and Mitterand felt deeply about. And since it came from the heart, people believed in what they said.
This passion has disappeared from the debate over the European Union. Indeed, these days, merely saying that the European idea transformed a war-torn continent into an island of freedom and stability would seem rather quaint to most. Now the issue is whether Europe can even be prevented from becoming a transfer union — or, in the words of Germany’s tabloid press, how much we want “to pay for the lazy Greeks?”

Robert W. – For years, Ontario had a special tax rate for cottage country (20% !!) that only applied to non-residents. Then in the 1990’s, Mike Harris eliminated the tax.
Predictably, many Americans (like Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) bought properties, and property values soared. The demand was helped along by the slumping loonie.
So I think that imposing a non-resident tax would have the effect of dampening demand in the Vancouver real estate market.
“So yin and yang are asymmetrical?”
Well no. Neither symmetry or asymmetry mean anything in the context of the video (except for maybe the humping scene). There is happy/sad, young/old, etc which are basically the other side of the same coin.
Asymmetrical is not the opposite of symmetrical.
Hugh Hewitt spoke with Mark Steyn today. Here’s the section about Canada:
HH: All right, to the serious stuff, or actually the good news. Up north, Stephen Harper, Fred Barnes writes a piece about the triumph of the conservatives. Tell us about your homeland, and why they did what they did.
MS: Well, the liberal party of Canada, which is the most successful governing party in the Western world, it was in power in Canada for 70 years of the 20th Century, no comparative record anywhere – not the Democrats in America, not the Conservatives in Britain. And it got the worst result in its history. It was down to third place, which has never happened, worst time since Canadian federation since 1867. And Michael Ignatieff, the leader, lost his seat. Now he may be known to some of your listeners, Hugh, because he was a professor at Harvard before he decided to return to Canada in order to become prime minister. And it didn’t work out for him.
HH: It didn’t work out.
MS: And Harvard is apparently mad. There’s, you know, at the Harvard faculty, they think it’s some sort of anti-elitist move by Canadians that they rejected this…Harvard had picked out the perfect prime minister for these benighted Canadians, and they rejected Harvard’s choice.
HH: But it’s a fairly big win for the conservatives. What do you expect them to do with it, if anything?
MS: Well, and that’s the question – if anything. I’m tired of Conservative parties that are in office, but not in power. And I want…the excuse for the last few years has been that the Conservatives have only had a minority in Parliament, and that’s why they couldn’t, for example, abolish the appalling law under which I was dragged into court over the free speech business. Well, okay, they’ve got a big majority now, and I would like them to actually get on and do some of this stuff. And instead, we see that it looks as if they will be the same passive creatures of the bureaucracy as far too many Conservative parties are in the Western world. One thing I admire about Democrats, you know, is they use their moment.
HH: Yup.
MS: The minute Obama got into office, he basically said we’re going to ram this stuff down the throat of the American people, because as he said, we won. I’d love it is Stephen Harper were to use the Obama line, we won, and to take the same attitude, because Democrats and Liberals don’t waste their moment.

1963 Communist Goals…
Capture one or both of the political parties in the US. (Guess which one they
did)
Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions, by
claiming their activities violate civil rights.
Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for Socialism, and
current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers
associations. Put the party line in text books.
Infiltrate the press. Get control of book review
assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions.
Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all form of artistic
expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good
sculpture from parks and buildings,” and substitute shapeless, awkward,
and meaningless forms.
Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography, and
obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio and TV.
Present Homosexuality, degeneracy, and promiscuity as “normal, natural,
and healthy.”
Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the
grounds that it violates the principle of “separation of church and
state.”
Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old fashioned,
out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a
worldwide basis.
Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats
who had no concern for the “common man.”
Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of
parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to
suppressive influence of parents.

“‘Dividing Forces are Mounting in Europe'”
“European Union officials are outraged about Denmark’s decision to restore border controls in violation of EU treaties. But a trend is emerging. German commentators worry that right-wing populism threatens to tear the EU apart.
As southern Europe continues coping with refugees fleeing the unrest in Libya and Tunisia, a number of countries have become increasingly nervous about just what to do with them. Italy, which has borne much of the burden of what President Silvio Berlusconi called the “human tsunami,” recently issued visas that allowed many refugees to travel into northern Europe when member states failed to help with the problem. Then Italy, France and other countries demanded revisions to the Schengen border-free travel agreement – a cornerstone of EU values.
But on Wednesday Denmark took the bold, unilateral step of reintroducing permanent border controls, claiming it was concerned about organized crime and illegal immigration. Behind the decision was the country’s right-wing populist Danish People’s Party (DPP), which leveraged a favorable vote on the center-right minority government’s economic legislation to force the measure through.
Denmark isn’t the only European country with powerful populist forces, though. Last month the right-wing populist True Finns party garnered one in five votes in Finland’s national election. Since then the party has been working to block EU-friendly policies such as aid to Greece and Portugal. Meanwhile parties touting anti-immigrant, anti-Europe aims are gaining ground across the EU.
German commentators are alarmed, and many warn that a failure to recover support for the EU could spell its demise.

Charges have been dropped against three Alberta men accused of shooting dead a pregnant wild horse and tossing its body down a hillside. For more than a year, the RCMP and the Crown were sure they had the right guys. They even charged the then12-year-old son of Jason Nixon, one of the accused. But then, just as the trial began, the defence produced an important piece of exculpatory evidence: The horse hadn’t been shot.
The Mounties had assumed it had been. They were operating on a tip from a man named Dave Goertz. Mr. Goertz, as everyone involved in the case knew, was a crackhead and a meth addict. He reported the crime after a local group that defends Alberta’s wild horse population posted a $25,000 reward.

“Whither Europe?”
“An unusual number of crises — from the Fukushima disaster to the Arab Spring — have challenged what used to be called the “European spirit.” The euroskepticism sparked by the euro crisis has become an epidemic. Experts warn of a retreat to nationalism.”
“They were the usual words of reassurance and conciliation. “Content is more important than timing,” EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said on Thursday, addressing a disagreement in Brussels over “stress tests” for 143 European nuclear reactors. “The public expects credible tests that will cover all foreseeable risks and security concerns.”
Like so much else in recent weeks, the safety tests for European nuclear plants have been a point of contention in Brussels. The meeting between Oettinger and representatives of the 27 member states ended without tangible results. In the wake of the Fukushima disaster the EU agrees that stress tests are important, but no one can agree on criteria. France and Great Britain, above all, have stonewalled detailed EU examinations — they see no reason to test their reactors with regard to anything besides natural catastrophes.
Nuclear stress tests are just one example, though, of an atmosphere at the EU in which communal feeling is crumbling. The financial crisis has split the continent, and “me first” has become the new credo in Brussels. Denmark just this week shut its borders unexpectedly — stepping back from the Schengen Agreement on visa-free travel throughout the EU on account of a sudden wave of immigrants fleeing chaos from the Arab Spring.
Daniel Cohn-Bendit, a prominent Green member of the EU parliament, suggested that Copenhagen should feel swift consequences. “The Danes have to decide: If they want to be serious about closing their borders then they need to resign from the Schengen Agreement,” he said to SPIEGEL ONLINE. “Then they’ll need visas of their own to travel through Europe — one for each country.”

Coming to a School near you? I kid you not.
Seems touching is okay now as long as its adult led. Will these children become our future airport security officers? Whatever happened to respecting boundaries?
‘Massaging the Bully out of the Kid’
“In schools where they’ve implemented it, they’ve found that there’s been a decrease in aggression and the students are learning better,” she said.
The program is offered to students in grades 1, 2 and 3.
The massages would ideally be done at the beginning of each school day, taking about 15 minutes.
“We teach the children how to massage each other,” Watkinson said, explaining the once-a-week sit-down massages cover the head, back and arms.
But, Watkinson admitted, it wasn’t easy to convince School District No. 22 to allow him to run MISP.
“I did a presentation to the board and they were really reluctant — very reluctant,” he said.
“But, I just kept talking to them because I thought it was really important.”
[in other words, he wore them down]

“Discredit the family as an institution.
Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of
parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to

I absolutely agree. It use to be thst the state considered itself a surrogate parent, but it’s gone far beyond that an now the state considers itself the parent period with the biological parents merely donated sperm and a surrogate womb.

“Rising Self-Interest Frays EU Spirit”

“The Finger of Blame
Al-Qaeda has taken revenge for the killing of Osama Bin Laden by blowing up 80 Pakistanis. “Bin Laden’s followers have vowed revenge for his death and the Pakistani Taliban said the attack by two suicide bombers on a paramilitary academy in the north-western town of Charsadda was their first taste of vengeance.”
‘We have done this to avenge the Abbottabad incident,’ said Ahsanullah Ahsan, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban. He warned that the group was also planning attacks on Americans living inside Pakistan. The attackers struck as the recruits were going on leave and 65 of them were among the 80 dead. Pools of blood strewn with soldiers caps and shoes lay on the road outside the academy as the wounded, looking dazed with parts of their clothes ripped away by shrapnel, were loaded into trucks.”
