    The same picture emerges when looking at the distribution of donations by size. For the Conservatives, about 10 per cent of the funds raised came from those giving between $1,000 and the maximum of $1,100; conversely, two-thirds came from those giving $400 or less. The NDP were similar, with 7 per cent coming from the highest donated amount, and 70 per cent coming from donations $400 and under. The Liberals – who have fulminated against the perils of the rich controlling the political process – were actually the party most dependent on big donations, with 35 per cent of their cash coming from donors giving between $1,000 and $1,100, while sub-$400 donors accounted for just 38 per cent of the funds the party raised.
    In fact, the Liberals outperformed among big donors, raising $3.2-million to the Conservatives’ $1.7-million. The Tories made up that ground, and more, with small donors.

    Interesting to note the rot apperently set in as early as that. And was seen to be such.

  16. I was just reading Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. I learned that, interestingly, there was no housing shortage after the 1906 quake – “interestingly” because, even given the death toll, the numbers who left the city immediately, and those who went to “temporary shelters”, “…that left nearly 100,000 people to be absorbed into the local housing market. Yet neither the newspapers nor other documents… mention any housing shortages, such as lengthy searches or bribes paid to landlords. Rising prices not only allocated the existing housing, they provided incentive for rebuilding…People made homeless by the San Francisco earthquake found housing more readily than people made homeless by New York’s rent control laws that took thousands of buildings off the market.”

  29. Where does this $300 million figure for an election come from? Does this include all the spending by the parties? If so, this shouldn’t count as the “public” cost of an election (except to the extent that these expenditures are elgible for a government funded rebate).
    Does it include the value of time spent by volunteers?
    This number seems very high to me, and I’ve always wondered what exactly it included.
    Has anyone ever seen a breakdown of what makes up this $300 million?

    People used to say that South Africa was 20 years behind the rest of the Western world. Television, for example, came late to South Africa (but so did pornography and the gay rights movement).
    Today, however, South Africa may be the grim model of the future Western world, for events in America reveal trends chillingly similar to those that destroyed our country.
    America’s structures are Western. Your Congress, your lobbying groups, your free speech, and the way ordinary Americans either get involved or ignore politics are peculiarly Western, not the way most of the world operates. But the fact that only about a third of Americans deem it important to vote is horrifying in light of how close you are to losing your Western character.
    Writing letters to the press, manning stands at county fairs, hosting fund-raising dinners, attending rallies, setting up conferences, writing your Congressman – that is what you know, and what you are comfortable with. Those are the political methods you’ve created for yourselves to keep your country on track and to ensure political accountability.
    But woe to you if – or more likely, when – the rules change. White Americans may soon find themselves unable or unwilling to stand up to challenge the new political methods that will be the inevitable result of the ethnic metamorphosis now taking place in America. Unable to cope with the new rules of the game – violence, mob riots, intimidation through accusations of racism, demands for proportionality based on racial numbers, and all the other social and political weapons used by the have-nots to bludgeon treasure and power from the haves – Americans, like others before them, will no doubt cave in. They will compromise away their independence and ultimately their way of life.
    That is exactly what happened in South Africa. I know, because I was there and I saw it happen.”
