It’d be nice to see a juxtaposition of the oil sands versus Baotou, China on the national airwaves right about now. Uhhhhh Jack? Those who are receiving equalization don’t actually subsidize anyone in Canada. Maybe it would be better if you mentioned to Quebec that they should kiss the feet of the west for subsidizing their failed socialist system. Maybe they should also kiss the feet of the west for allowing a succession of Quebecois to ruin the rest of the country for 40 years as well.

Lookout – not that we need any votes to drift from the NDP to the libs – but that double dipping with the housing allowance is truly disturbing. So it’s money received that they don’t need to spend and it’s not a taxable benefit. Thanks for thinking of the poor families out there Jack, you weasel.

It turns out, given the population and equalization payments that Quebecers get $107.00 per year per person from Canada. Plus Quebec gets about 32 million in spinoffs from the oil sands. Not to mention the employment provided to wandering Quebecois in Alberta. Sorry Jack, Quebec does very well, thank you.
I actually live in Edm Strathcona, and there are lefties here who would vote for NDP even if they campaigned on tripling our transfer payments to the province parasitique.
The problem we have is that the Liberals just now finally nominated a token candidate, some 2nd year college student, but their members are involved in the “Liberals for Linda” campaign, where they try to get Lib members to vote NDP.
The coaltion has been alive and well here for years!

Like thousands of others, I work there and live in Saskatchewan, contributing to the bulk of our province’s ‘boom’ that you hear so much about. You have to look awfully hard to find an actual Albertan working there, as the rest of the country, especially the Maritime provinces, suck up the majority of the billions in payroll. The oilsands are a major economic engine for the whole country. I’m pretty tired of people like you enjoying all the benefits while we do the dirty work and are maligned for it.

You don’t know where I live & your “how the oilsands REALLY work” amounts to saying that people from outside Alberta work there. Hardly news. And saying that workers who leave their homes to “do the dirty work” are “sucking up” the money is bogus. They are subsidizing the project with their lives [somtimes literally]
This is a big topic and, unless you inform yourself, a worker is like a soldier in the trenches — very familiar with his immediate surroundings, but unlikely to know the general stategic situation.
Since the topic is subsidies, here’s a detail —

You mention Saskatchewan’s boom — If you are implying that it is owing to going to Alberta & bringing back money, I sure there are others who can disabuse you of that bit of self-agrandizement. It’s not even true about Newfoundland anymore. Incidently, on a per capita basis Saskatchewan emissions are right up there with those of Alberta.
Albertans give a lot, but we get dumped on by useful idiots from all stripes who vilify us for not buying into the socialist dream. Canada is ungovernable because there are too many competing agendas.
Alberta must secede if Iggy and friends form the government; economic power without political power is worthless. The “sugar-daddy” of Confederation is our only role according to them. Albertans have to (for once) show some pride and self respect, and leave this disfunctionality.
In a way, I hope Jacko/Iggy/Gillie/Lizzy form a non-majority coalition. They deserve each other.

Allowing companies to deduct their costs of doing business is not a subsidy. The argument in the link you provided is exactly that. If I have a business, and I hire someone at $40,000/year to assist, I deduct the $40,000 from my income, and pay $40,000 x my tax rate less tax. To say then, that because of that, the government is subsidizing me, is ridiculous.
Quite frankly, Dizzy, I don’t care where you live. I am kind of curious as to whether this $1.7 B ‘taxpayer’s bill’ is net of the spinoffs and taxes that the oilsands producers pay. As to the self-agrandizement, this little soldier sees a huge part of the housing boom in Saskatchewan being driven by commuters such as myself, and expats returning home after spending their working lives in Alberta’s energy industry. I suspect you belong to that political ideology that specializes in redistributing wealth rather than the one that creates it.
Dizzy’s link has got to be one of the dizziest things I’ve read in years? Where do they find innumerates and economic illiterates to write such nonsense?
There are some troubling aspects to oil sands operations – even to rock-ribbed, pro-development conservatives like me. However, if we are going to have discussions and debate, let it be among sane people – not with ignorant boo-boo birds like Mitchell Anderson.
