In tonight’s pop music oddity from 1978, former Miss Finland Armi Anja Orvokki Aavikko and her partner Ilka Lipsanen (who performed under the stage name of “Danny”) lip-sync their way through a performance of I Want To Love You Tender. The song itself is as trite and inconsequential as anything in the history of Euro-pop, but the choreography of the accompanying dance group is… extraordinary.

The choreographer was Benny Hill?
I was thinking more like gently glistening to the oldies with Mr. Simmons. :OP
Just have to quote Waldorf and Statler from the Muppet Show:
Waldorf: Just when you think this show is terrible something wonderful happens.
Statler: What?
Waldorf: It ends.
🙂
I’m guessing that whoever the choreographer was changed his/her name and moved to another country.
Speaking of ‘choreography’…
“Scott Burgess resigned today as The Detroit News auto critic after his editors bowed to a request by an advertiser to water down his negative review of the Chrysler 200.
“The Chrysler 200 is the car that sits at the center of a multi-million-dollar, Eminem-starring ‘Imported from Detroit’ campaign meant to symbolize the rebirth of not only the automaker, but of Detroit….”
The original review, with the deleted lines struck out in red, here.

I read the Chrysler review and think the piece did need some editing. The piece read like it had been written by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, shifting back and forth from reasoned critique to silly and exaggerated observations.
It was wrong of the editors to change the copy without consulting with the writer, and they have done immense harm to their credibility by doing so. But I have to wonder if this reviewer always wrote in this style, or if some first stream of consciousness draft got submitted by mistake.
The most remarkable performance I have ever seen was by the Finnish womens’ choir Philomela. It was entirely a cappella, and was performed in the Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver. They only sold about 100 tickets, and the audience sat on portable chairs in the middle of the church, in a circular arrangement facing the centre of the circle. The choir came out and sang around and within the audience, constantly moving around sometimes running or skipping. Those Finns can come up with some pretty amazing stuff.
Blunder over Libya
Does anyone remember the Powell doctrine? A relic of Colin Powell’s days in the Pentagon, this held that any U.S. military incursion into a foreign country must meet three criteria of success. It must enjoy broad international support, employ overwhelming force, and deploy a clear exit strategy.

hi eb.
fcukoff eh?
maybe I should just pick a diff. handle but you expunge *anything* that is contrary to right wing myopic thinking.
Hey, the dancers should be applauded; clearly they nailed that extraordinary dance routine on the very first take.
Beagle, I’ve frequently been supportive of you. However, much of the time you’re still the anti-social kid throwing rocks at the school windows and then saying it was the principal’s fault.
Thanks to EBD for deleting your comments. I don’t go to a museum to see trash and I don’t come here to read comments like yours above.
Don’t go to hell, just get some help.
I believe “Scandinavians” include Norway Sweden, and Denmark (Legoland).
But I have been wrong before and will continue to get more experience at this.
Now is it just me or are “Euro-artists” a bit weird or is it just me? I may have been dropped on my head as a child.

“My moment with Moammar
* February 28, 2011 5:56 PM |
* By Louise Elliott
As we sprinted across Moammar Gadhafi’s front lawn, we had to swerve to avoid the camels.
It was a bizarre obstacle course: dozens of the ungainly creatures, sitting, standing, and yes, fornicating.
It was December, 2004. Our media bus holding a dozen journalists, cameramen and photographers had been delayed after taking a wrong turn on the way in from the Tripoli Airport. Then-prime minister Paul Martin was already in the Bedouin tent inside the compound that the Libyan leader still calls home. If we didn’t hustle, we’d miss the one photo-op: a brief handshake.
As we jumped off the bus, Alphee Moreau, the PMO’s advance man at the time, shouted: “Run! Run! Be careful, the camels are dangerous!”
Jet-lagged and culture shocked, we giggled in spite of ourselves as we closed in on the tent. There, in a dimly-lit and incense-clouded corner, was the man of the hour, resplendent in robes and his trademark hat. He was shaking hands with our pale-faced Canadian leader.”

(*Apology to John Bunyan)
Quite a few people with whom I normally tend to agree, have taken the position that our intervention in Libya is wrong-headed. I think they might be right but at this point, I believe the situation was forced upon us. Where “we” may have blundered was in allowing Egypt to dump Mubarak. Once that happened, a chain of less predictable events began, such as regime change in Yemen, Syria or Libya. Who knows what will come of any of those cases? With Egypt, it was mainly a matter of retiring one man and finding someone slightly different who could oversee a transition to someone else hopefully not that different again. It could turn out a lot worse of course. And we should have known that from day one of the Tunisian forerunner.
So I tend to disagree that we have done the wrong thing in Libya. I think we have had to do this particular action to prevent Gadhafi from killing many thousands of people followed by a predictable return to the active terrorism sponsorship that marked his career for many years earlier on. He would have been mad enough at the west for mildly encouraging the rebels. But now we have to finish him off, having him around in the future will be asking for big trouble.
Hopefully they can find some reasonably stable groups to form a provisional government and the place can be turned into a half-decent imitation of Turkey or Egypt. It may not be our cup of tea, but it won’t be as bad as Libya under Mad-haffy.
However, for those who want to appear wise (and who doesn’t) I suppose the odds favour caution on this intervention, after all, one might look at the folks in charge and shudder a little, and then there’s the irrational nature of the Arab political world in general. This will have to be supervised by adults, so let’s hope that Obama finds the golfing weather favourable.
Beagle,
No one likes a dog that walks in their house and poops on the carpet, there are ways of getting a point across with out acting like a steaming pile. But then again I don’t imagine anyone who thinks differently then you is afforded that level of civility. Manners go along way.

It is not a military attack on Libya, it is a sales pitch for used military planes : “Obama pushes F-18 fighter jet in Brazil meeting” Reuters.

Just to remind people, Libya admitted it was responsible for the Lockerbie bombing that murdered just under 300 people.
Libya paid over $1 billion to claimants (128 Americans got $1 million each but the law firm got $300 million for all the ‘hard’ work they did!)
Giving a bitch slap to Muammar was required justice eventually if for no other reason.
But right from the start western leaders led Libyans to believe they would help and it would have been a grave injustice for the west to renege on its implied help.
Perhaps intervention in Libya was the right thing to do, but the West should expect the usual blame and recriminations. None of the Arab League showed up to do their bit and they’re already pointing fingers at the damage and civilian deaths. I suspect if the rebels succeed in ousting Ghaddafi, whoever takes over will “forget” any gratitude owed to the West for its support and join the rest of the Arab world in blaming. Often the leaders we initially support turn around a bite us in the ass–like our friend Saddam. I think this course of action is right but the West will not get any credit for doing it.

I would have waited and allowed each side to kill their opponent a lot.
Allow them to take positions and kill off the rabid crazies while we gather intelligence, so when our guys get there they’re more demoralized and battle weary with less ammo.
The “rebels”, the yabbering heads on the MSM talk about will be found out in the end, to be sadly, Islamotards bent on a Sharia closed state like Iran and Syria.
I think the characterization of the present middle east unrest as “Arab’s looking for freedom” is really really naive at best
Right now we’re going down the road to another Kosovo like disaster.

That was wonderful. There was a bizarre purity to its awfulness.
I have no problem with going into Libya, my concern is the uncertain rules of engagement – whats the objective? what is the end point and when do we leave? This is open ended – if Gadaffi stays, what have we accomplished?
A listening tip…
Thomas Mulcair says NDP takes high road, no attack ads, then goes on CFRA, the Michael Harris show, and says the following about the Conservatives in about ten minutes.
— they are pig headed
— social inequality not their radar
— they give money to oil companies and banks, not poor people
— Stockwell Day was a total disaster in Alberta
— Day, started making bad cuts at Treasury Board in Ottawa, using rusty machete and not a scalpel
— If they win a majority, then they can then fall on Canadians with full force of right wing ideology
— public servants are whipping boys for the Conservatives, easy to pick on
— people who work in govt are right to be fearful of a Conservative government
— All smoke and mirrors, Peter MacKay talks through his hat
— MacKay is not careful, has no filter between his brain and mouth
— The Conservatives are lying, doctoring documents, cheating on campaign financing
Why Libya and not Yemen? Why Libya and not Bahrain? Why Libya and not Syria? Why Libya and not Iran? You get the idea, why help the overthrow of this tinpot despot and not others in the area? most of the rebels and the government soldiers for that matter were not even born when Qaddafi took power.
The US supposedly only went in AFTER the Arab League gave their blessing, but you see Canadian antiques are already in-theater while all the new toys from the Arab League somehow can’t make it a few klicks down the road. Google the strengths of any of those countries out there and you will wonder how Canada keeps sovereignty with what little we have.
No matter how this ends, the west will end up having been played like a cheap fiddle and then blamed for it all. Meanwhile, the Big O is congratulating Brazil for finding work for all those drilling platforms that left the gulf last year.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I’m a very tolerant person. I’m empathetic towards people regardless of race, creed, orientation or scandiness. It’s a trait of mine which has frequently been remarked upon. I’m just curious is all.

Black Mamba (2:09): Finns aren’t Scandinavians. Genetically different, entirely different (non-Germanic) root-language, and a distinct culture.
Properly speaking, the Scandinavian countries are Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Well, I knew about the language. The genetic thing is interesting.
Iceland?
Not really. Some people call them Scandinavian, just as some people call Finns Scandinavian, but Icelanders are (genetically) a (long-blended) mix of Norwegians and Celts (Irish/Scottish, including the northern Scottish Isles).
They *do* have a lot of Scandinavian blood.
Sure sounded and looked like an East-Indian music vid .
