In addition to being a superb songwriter and a fine guitarist, Illinois native Robbie Fulks is one of the most entertaining – and wickedly funny – musicians extant. None of his album tracks, or even off-the-mixing-board live performances, are available at YouTube or other video sites, so here’s the next best thing: an audience POV video of he and Nora O’Connor performing an acoustic version of Fulks’ Parallel Bars. (Lyrics here.)

  2. Palin hits Oblameya again via Facebook;
    The $4-Per-Gallon President
The evidence of the President’s anti-drilling mentality and his culpability in the high gas prices hurting Americans is there for all to see. The following is not even an exhaustive list:
    […]
Hitting the American people with higher gas prices like this is essentially a hidden tax and a transfer of wealth to foreign regimes who are providing us the energy we refuse to provide for ourselves. Like inflation, higher energy prices are a hidden tax on Americans who are struggling to make ends meet. And these high gas prices will be felt in the form of higher food prices due to higher transportation costs. Energy is connected to everything in our economy. Access to affordable and secure energy is key to economic growth, which in turn is key to job growth. Energy is the building block of our economy. The President is purposely weakening that building block and weakening our country.
    2012 can’t come soon enough.

  3. Hmmm.
Whilst reading the Palin quote above, after coming here from the “Tennessee is not Wisconsin thread,” I instinctly muttered I can see Tennessee from my house.
I think that would be a great slogan for her.
Every time an occurence like Wisconsin or price shock to the economy, which affects a geographical area of America, by saying she can “see them” she projects she relates to them, the people. When you read or listen to what she is on record saying she is talking above and around the noise to the American people. You can agree or disagree with her on policy but she has that jam about her.
She’s a lot sharper than she gets credit for, and it would be good turnaround on Tina Fey.
    Nicely done Kate.

  4. Jeez, I owe you again EB. Even though I’d never heard of Robbie Fulks before this very minute, I have half a mind to get married again just to have him & his band do the reception gig.
Heading to the iTunes Store right now.
    Many thanks.

  5. EBD, I am responding to beagle because he’s attempted to make an actual point and he’s factually mistaken. This terrible situation is not the fault of capitalism, beagle, it’s the fault of government overregulation and cronyism, whereby a company was granted by government fiat sole right to manufacture a drug which it did not develop. Do you see the difference?

  6. “Are you a bullied fat kid?”
Having watched the video I have only one question. Did EBD enjoy body slamming beagle as much as I enjoyed watching EBD body slam beagle?

  7. [ All Fukushima Daini units in cold shutdown
    15 March 2011
All four units at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant have now achieved cold shutdown – where coolant water is at less than 100ºC – with full operation of cooling systems, Tepco reported. All the reactors shut down automatically during last week’s earthquake and have remained safe. While unit 3’s shutdown went as expected, damage to the emergency core cooling systems of units 1, 2 and 4 led to the announcement of emergency status. These three reactors were prepared for potential pressure release, but this was never required. Unit 1 announced cold shutdown at 1.24 am on 14 March and unit 2 followed at 3.52 am. Tepco has now announced that unit 4 achieved cold shutdown at 7.15 pm on 15 March. Water levels are now stable in all four reactors and offsite power is available, the company said.]
If so, our fearmongering media should be charged as they are still!! in runaway mode..

  8. Mal, if you’re just starting out I highly recommend a CD called “The Very Best of Robbie Fulks” (it’s not a ‘greatest hits’ compilation, the title is kind of a joke.)
It’s got a cracking, full-band version of “Parallel Bars” on it with Kelly Willis singing the female part. “I Just Want To Meet The Man” is one of the funniest songs you’ll ever hear – it’s enough to make you weep. And then there’s “White Man’s Bourbon”…

  9. “Are you a bullied fat kid?”
Not at all surprising. As shown by our police and courts, the last thing you want to do in our country is defend your home or self.
Of course we are still encouraged to wonder aloud why nobody did anything when someone is attacked in a public place and no one comes to help.
I recently watched a documentary on WWII. It turns out according to this series that we were actually the bad guys, what with carpet bombing and the atomic bomb and all. I’m glad I was able to get myself straightened out on my history as I had mistakenly assumed that liberating Europe and shutting down the concentration camps along with subduing the Japanese and their penchant for genocide was ‘good’
Hopefully the kid has time to think while suspended and realizes how wrong it now is to defend yourself or, heaven forbid, come to someones rescue.
    Sarcasm intended!

  10. Three Jewish Children
Ruth Fogel was in the bathroom when the Palestinian terrorists pounced on her husband Udi and their three-month-old daughter Hadas, slitting their throats as they lay in bed on Friday night in their home in Itamar.
The terrorists stabbed Ruth to death as she came out of the bathroom. With both parents and the newborn dead, they moved on to the other children, going into a bedroom where Ruth and Udi’s sons Yoav (11) and Elad (4) were sleeping. They stabbed them through their hearts and slit their throats.

  11. ‘Fountains Of Wayne Hotline’ is also a clever song by Robbie. Any musicians will get a kick out of it!

  12. Re: kid being bullied. I think the kid will consider the suspension a badge of honor–at least I would.
This nonsense that if you’re being tormented you should not retaliate, is untenable. If depression can be caused by unresolvable and intolerable stress, we are institutionalizing mental illness by policies that advocate not sticking up for yourself. My smallest cat still resorts to spitting and slashing when she’s being bullied by my bigger cat. She doesn’t always win the stand off, but she retains her dignity. And the other cat treats her warily and with respect and often, he’s the one who backs off.

    …-
“*Canadian, global economy to overcome Japan and continue expanding: TD”
“A major Canadian bank predicts the economy will overcome any effects from the disaster unfolding in Japan and expand significantly faster than was expected a few months ago.
The TD Bank’s new forecast has the Canadian economy growing strongly in the first half of this year — overlooking both the Japan and Middle East crises — and slowing slightly in the latter half.
For the year, the chartered bank expects the economy will expand by three per cent, half a point more than its previous estimate and 0.6 percentage points higher than the Bank of Canada’s official projection.
The new forecast is not a major surprise — more and more of Canada’s financial institutions have been upgrading their scenarios. The economist consensus given to the Finance Department on Friday in preparation for the March 22 budget has moved to 2.9 per cent from 2.4 per cent in January.
TD chief economist Craig Alexander agrees the risks to growth have increased in number — particularly with the Middle East and Japan adding to uncertainty — but the most likely outcome remains for modest to strong growth in Canada this year, and moderate growth of 2.5 per cent next.
“You don’t want to minimize what’s happening in Japan and if the worst fears come true then Japan’s economy is going to do a whole lost worse,” said Alexander.
“But the risks are risks, they aren’t the most likely outcome. It’s still the case that the economic climate in the world is quite good. For Canada, we’re going to have moderate growth, low inflation, solid profit growth, low albeit rising interest rates … this is actually a pretty benign economic environment.”
Alexander says as devastating as the disaster in Japan is in human terms, the macro-economic impacts are small since global supply chains will find substitute sources for output to replace the affected region.
While it predates the Japanese natural disaster, Statistics Canada released fresh data Wednesday showing that Canada’s still depressed manufacturing sector had a banner January, with activity picking up by a massive 5.5 per cent in volume terms.
The data add credence to December’s trade surge, which even after a downward revision showed exports rising about eight per cent.”
