Reader Tips

Because of the language barrier and the absence of subtitles, it’s not immediately apparent that the play-by-play man who is the subject of the action in tonight’s video was a personally troubled, obsessive-compulsive, nit-picking critic. And a pothead.

  1. Well he is certainly no Vic Rauter! Speaking of which, just listening to him call The Brier final, a Canadian classic!

  2. At Richochet.com, Ken Sweeney describes Obama’s anti-bulling initiative as “sad and pathetic,” and writes:
“This mindset goes beyond the specific topic of bullying. It is the mindset that you can perfect mankind and create a utopia through government action, not 300 million individuals taking responsibility for their lives.”
    He quotes NRO’s Jim Geraghty:

“…bullies stop being a problem when their victims have enough inner strength to refuse to accept it, and to stand up for themselves. Teachers, principles, authority figures — it’s great when they are there and witness bullying and are there to mete out justice. But anybody who’s been bullied knows that the eyes and ears of authority are not all-seeing and all-hearing. At that point, it’s up to you. But instead, there seems to be a belief in the White House that with enough conferences, enough best-practices discussions, enough Department of Education pamphlets and pilot programs, that somehow the federal government can end a social phenomenon that has existed as long as there have been children and teenagers.”

  3. EBD
    Found this quite amazing:
“A remarkable record was set by the calculating prodigy Zacharias Dase, who in 1844 employed a Machin-like formula to calculate 200 decimals of π in his head at the behest of Gauss. ”
    Same wiki/pi

  4. EBD, memorizing pi to over 10,000 decimal places is a pirotechnical marvel. Akira Haraguchi, a 60-year-old man from Japan, who is reported to have recited pi to 100,000 places … that’s the life of Pi.

that’s what I’ve managed to memorize thus far. just for practice. I also remember a great deal of shyt dished out in my life by self-righteous conservatists.
george b aberhart, principle of st george’s school for one. apparently thought the place was named after him. a clever bully, picked on the grades about 3 to 6. younger and it’s too obvious; older and they can hit back. I remember sitting in the grade 7 room hearing him wailing away at another poor schmuck after selecting from his collection of straps kept prominently displayed in his cubbyhole office. maybe that was it; making up for feelings of inadequateness.
he’s dead now, if I ever track down his grave sight I will turn the marker into gravel for my new patio and his bones into bone meal for my roses.

  6. EBD, when I clicked on Ken Sweeney (11:02) it took me to a great article on manliness but not a comment on bullying.
[Thanks for alerting me to that, Rita. The link has been fixed. – EBD]

  7. All CBC sportscasters should have to take that test!
Hey they don’t need to pass, just show us their footage….

  8. EBD- I can tell you, first-hand, that bullying is usually done with the outright approval of teachers, principals, and authority figures. To this day, when someone is introduced as a teacher, my fists clench in vicious rage. They are the ultimate enablers of bullying, which they often use as payback for kids who happen to be a bit smarter than they are. It appears beagle may know of what I speak.

  9. But Beagle, I thought all of Canada was full of Trudeaupia loving leftists like yourself..at least that’s what you say when talking about ‘your’ Canada over the past while..
Where did all these Conservative bullies that you speak of come from?
Perhaps you are confusing them with leftists who really do bully and harass people if they don’t toe the line.
No one hates like a leftist..

  10. And here’s another one for you, Wendy, from the WSJ:

None of this amounts to “another Chernobyl.” The Chernobyl reactor had two crucial design flaws. First, it used graphite (carbon) instead of water to “moderate” the neutrons, which makes possible the nuclear reaction. The graphite caught fire in April 1986 and burned for four days. Water does not catch fire.
Second, Chernobyl had no containment structure. When the graphite caught fire, it spouted a plume of radioactive smoke that spread across the globe. A containment structure would have both smothered the fire and contained the radioactivity.

  11. Japanese Earthquake Update (14 March 05:15 CET)
At unit 1, plant operators were able to restore a residual heat remover system, which is now being used to cool the reactor. Work is in progress to achieve a cold shutdown of the reactor.
Workers at units 2 and 4 are working to restore residual heat removal systems.
Unit 3 is in a safe, cold shutdown.
Radiation dose rate measurements observed at four locations around the plant’s perimeter over a 16-hour period on 13 March were all normal.
.Japanese Earthquake Update (14 March 07:00 CET)
Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) has provided the IAEA with further information about the hydrogen explosion that occurred today at the Unit 3 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
All personnel at the site are accounted for. Six people have been injured.
The reactor building exploded but the primary containment vessel was not damaged. The control room of unit 3 remains operational.

“Lost City of Atlantis: Did Explorer Richard Freund Find Atlantis?”
“He thinks he may have discovered the Lost City of Atlantis. And the American archeologist intends to prove it and solve the mystery once and for all.
For much of the more than 11,000 years that have passed since the ‘Lost City of Atlantis’ was lost – if indeed it existed and was lost – the thinking has been that it was a fictional city. Either that or Plato, who first wrote about it in his two dialogues, Timaeus and Critias about 360 B.C, got things mixed up somehow.
But in more modern times the viewpoint has taken hold that the ‘Lost City of Atlantis’ was both real and lost. How lost? One theory, timely now with the destruction in Japan, is that it was hit and wiped out by a tsunami, this about 9600 B.C.. And there is a American explorer who not only believes it exists but believes they have found it. The search is the subject of a March 13, 2011 National Geographic channel documentary.”

  15. Kate is back in about a week. Before then, she has a little matter known as the “national specialty” to take care of, (having pretty much cleaned up in Tennessee). Thanks everyone, for your patience.

  16. ‘Fukushima Marks the End of the Nuclear Era’
    ‘Japan’s Chernobyl’
I am absolutely surprized to see doomy headlines like these at:
    http://www.spiegel.de/international/
Rather than that pessimistic view, I think that the Japanese are exactly the superior technical people who will figure out how better to handle/contain these disasters and help the whole world move further into the nuclear power future.
OTOH, if the Japanese wind up closing down all their nuclear plants, it will signal the beginning of the new Dark Ages, because many of the large super cities of the world will have to be vacated.

    ha ha ha !!!!
    hi kursk,
    it’s spelled *turdeau*.
and yes, walt, that’s saint george from the biggest hick town in the country.
george b aberhart a.k.a. ‘gba the great big ape’ was a conservatist thru and thru. he even let mr park’s class of genius wannabes set up their own junior conservatist party supporters. yesiree, mr aberhart who regularly went from friday morning assembly singing god save the queen and praising jesus to monday afternoon beating up another hapless victim.
I still remember the look of dismay on herr aberhart’s face when the maple leaf flag went up in front of the place the first time. when they tore the old one down I paid regular visits smashing out the windows. heh heh heh.

    “What if Qaddafi Wins?”
“If something doesn’t change soon, Muammar Qaddafi will kill his way back into power over all Libya’s territory. His forces are retaking rebel positions. The opposition is crumbling. And it looks like the United States and Europe will stand back and just let it happen.
This isn’t the first time an Arab tyrant has made a startling comeback after an uprising nearly swept him away. Saddam Hussein lost control of most of Iraq after the 1991 Gulf War, but tens of thousands of dead bodies later, he was firmly and ruthlessly back in the saddle.
There are good arguments against getting involved. Not even the most hawkish interventionist would have chosen a war against Qaddafi a month ago. There aren’t many worse human-rights abusers out there, though there are some. And there are certainly countries where the West has more national interests at stake, the most obvious being Iran. But let’s not pretend there won’t be consequences beyond the shores of Tripoli if Qaddafi butchers his way back to Benghazi.
He’ll emerge meaner and more isolated than ever and hell-bent on revenge. We can forget about going back to the status quo ante when his relations with others were more or less “normal.” Whatever reluctance he felt against acting out will be eroded, if not lost entirely, now that he knows the West has little appetite to move against him, even when he is cornered and at his most vulnerable.
If the only Arab rulers to be deposed by revolution are the nominally pro-American “moderates,” while the mass-murdering state sponsors of terrorism hang on, change indeed will be coming to the Middle East and North Africa, but it won’t be the change we were hoping for. One thing, however, will not have changed an iota: the Middle East will be governed by violence just as it always has.
If the Caligula of North Africa survives by fighting to the death and prevailing, he will surely inspire the other hard rulers to take the same strategy, especially after the humiliating and mostly nonviolent defeats of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak and Tunisia’s Ben Ali. The killers of the resistance bloc — Iran’s Islamic Republic, Bashar al-Assad’s Baath Party in Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Hamas in Gaza — won’t likely be overthrown by peaceful demonstrations but by massive internally or externally driven wars.”

  20. beagle, this is off topic, but you shouldn’t let someone who mistreated you continue to live in your head 32 years after his body was laid to rest. I agree with coach that your take on bullying is largely ignored, but is the worst sort because those who are supposed to protect are complicit. Now society is largely at the other extreme where the aggressor (in your case Aberhart) is portrayed as the victim. Ooops, not so, he was a white male.
As for tracking down his grave stone, took me only a minute search on the interweb.

    *Ontario Liberal McGuinty’s “smart meters”:
“McGuinty Liberal government “green energy” boondoggle”
    “Smart Meters are Tax Machines”
“The McGuinty Liberal government today once again proved that they have next to no knowledge of the impacts that their “green energy” boondoggle is having on regular Ontario Families. Ontario citizens, having been forced to pay an additional 8% HST on their hydro bill, are facing a 40% Hydro rate hike over the course of the next several years.
More odious than the price increases are the manner in which they’ve been applied, noted Randy Hillier, the Member for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington, and a former electrician.
“They told Ontario ‘We’ll install these smart meters, and you’ll save money if you play your cards right,’” said Hillier. “But it was all a ruse. You can’t save money, because you can’t move all of your electrical use to the middle of the night. You can’t save money, because they’ve raised the base price of power over and above what we used to pay.”
“These so-called ‘smart-meters’ are an expensive way of pulling the wool over our eyes as Dalton McGuinty and his cronies reach ever-deeper into our pockets,” said Hillier.
The smart meter program is estimated to cost over $10 Billion, at a time when the province has an annual deficit of $20 Billion. The cost will be recouped from ratepayers.”
