Ethical Oil

Let the European bastards freeze in the dark;

What’s new is last week, the very week when Gadhafi and his son told the world they’d fight democracy protesters to the last bullet, was the week the European Union chose to criticize Canada’s oilsands because — get this — they say we have 20 more grams of carbon dioxide per megajoule of oil than Libya does.

  1. 20 grams per megajoule . great,
does that include the stuff when the MadDog of the Middle East torches the wells.

  2. Wonder if the French would prefer red or white wine when they eat some megajoule crow?
It would be nice for the Euro-Rubes to have Libya suspend oil production for a few months and they a massive gasoline shortages.
They so richly deserve a gas shortage caused by hypocrisy.
    Richly deserved.

  3. Kind of a moot point, we couldn’t ship Alberta oil to Europe even if they weren’t a bunch of posturing wankers. No pipeline. However I must say this kind of attitude isn’t much incentive to build one, is it? Sell it to the Chicoms, they’re barbarians but they have better manners.
It will be interesting to see what they say when the big frickin’ soot plume of semi-combusted crude reaches France from Libya.

  4. Far off politicians, foreign or domestic, meddling in western Canada’s oil industry reminds me of NEP arrogance. So, channeling King Ralph, “Let the European b*****ds freeze in the dark”. Paying for any environmental damage caused by an extra 20g/MJ of CO2 will seem like a bargain if the Middle East problems effect oil exports.

  5. Sorry, my editing took out my first sentence. Should have been – You’re first sentence is right on target…

  6. I think the reference to the eastern b@#*&^ds was more of the Peter Lougheed era, though not Lougheed himself. Ralph was known for the “bums and creeps” comment. Either way they can freeze in the dark. I’m sure the US of Obama is using this crisis to pry the cold dead hand of the american consumer from the gas pump. Seems he could release some oil from the strategic reserves and permit drilling in the Gulf or begin shale oil drilling to ease the price rises. Even here in lala land gas prices jumped 0.11 cents on Thursday. Oil companies and global warming lunatics are going to use this to jack the prices so high everyone will be crying for more electric cars. Oh wait, where does that electricity come from again? And all the rare earth elements to make the batteries? Oh yeah that would be China, land of the free….oh never mind. Chaos continues and no one is doing anything to bring it under control. But we should “never let a good crisis go to waste.”

  7. When Sadam torched Iraqs wells the first gulf war was over.Alberta firefighters snuffed out most of them.Whose going to do it in Libya? The French?

  8. I agree i am not sure if we send oil to euorpe but screw em we should stop sending/selling to them and start sending selling it to china . simple and yes let them freeze .

  9. spike 1
    Gulf I
Actually Saddam torched KUWAIT’s oil wells.
    No Iraqui wells got torched….
Earlier he was deliberately pumping crude directly into the GULF.

  10. Credit where credit is due. The man who put out the oil well fires in first Iraq conflict was Red Adair.
I don’t care if anyone bothers to put out the coming oil well fires in Libya. Let the Euro-pissants park those little noisy boxes they drive and the wealthier Euro-wankers can park their BMWs. That would be good. They will make great pedestrians.

  11. “they say we have 20 more grams of carbon dioxide per megajoule of oil than Libya does.”
Then we should get an award for manufacturing all that ‘plant food’.
Seriously, It’s time for Harper et al to stop paying lip service to the AGW/CO2 farce. The time for standing mute while some demented clown spews junk science condemnations at us has ended.

  12. Economy crippling energy prices will clear all the green nonsense from the minds of the majority of voters in the US and Canada. So, high oil prices via permitoriums on deep water drilling and using other federal depts. to close off land to oil development will backfire on Democrats. It allows the Republicans to be the only party that can credibly promise gas price relief and high-paying resource industry jobs by opening up drilling activity.
I am not optimistic that skyrocketing prices will have the same effect on Europe. Too many voters have been accustomed to Big Government solutions for far too long. Any protest will be of the anti-capitalism variety demanding that politicians “fix” things by taxing the rich and subsidizing everyone else. Perhaps EU politicians will actually succeed in devising a way to tax the dirty Canadian oilsands – UN collected carbon taxes, Global ETS, green compliant import tariffs, etc..

  13. Phantom – you don’t need a pipeline the whole way, only a pipeline to deep salt water. Once the mega-tankers can get at it, the volume available globally increases. It’s not necessary that our oil physically makes it to Europe, if the US buys all of it that we’re willing to sell, that decreases the amount they’ll have to buy internationally.
Of course, the supply is only as good and dependable as the route taken (Straight of Hormuz comes to mind).

  14. How large is 20 grams per megajoule?
My math says about the size of one fart let loose in the crowd at an Edmonton Oilers game.
    Idiots.

  15. Alberta oil has no blood in it unlike African oil but the PC AGW EU morons wouldn’t want to hear about that.
Levants Ethical Oil is an interesting read.
As an aside the newly crowned Premier elect in BC Christy ‘i never lie’ Clark is an AGW, no oil tankers, no pipeline lefty.

  16. All that extra CO2 means we have to subsidize Canadian farmers to a lessor extent than European farmers. Therefore our oil has magical healing powers for the economy.Prove me wrong.

  17. It was the Texan Red Adair who went in with the big reputation and all the fanfare.
It was the Canucks who quietly and efficiently, really carried the ball.

  18. How about we just cut them off from all Canadian exports, especially wood and petroleum, and start imposing crippling duties. Do you think they’d catch on?

  19. Another Calgary Marc
Yeah…they made a big deal about our furs but the asian tigers took up the slack.
All we by from them are BMWs, over-rated wines and chain saws…..manufactured more and more in Brazil…
They have tariffs against grain etc imports to subsidize their farmers….Asia is a bigger, better and more polite market….even the Chicoms.

  20. sasquatch: don’t forget the single-malts. 🙂 They do make some good cars, though.

  21. When man has food they can make plans when man has no food they only have one plan. The Europeans are about to find out this applies to oil. Russia supplies their gas and crazy Arabs supply their oil.
To quote a great philosopher “what a bunch of Maroons!”
For the cartoon challenged that would be Bugs Bunny

  22. Red Adair was an old man by the time of Kuwait. his prodigies Boots and Coots did more at the time using Reds old explosive technique but it was Safety Boss with the newer techniques that put out most of the fires and had the honour of putting out the last one. Mike Miller retired a lot younger than Red.

For Europe, Alberta oil is too dirty. Isn’t Libyan oil too bloody?
    —————-
Blood is biodegradeable(SIGN!)…And Alberta is a long way away.
Besides, Europe knows all about dictators. Why help HARPER!
    Ghadaffi was bad enough!

  24. Whenever Canada pops up in the UN or EU environmental bad books
it usually traces back to the efforts of some marxist traitor here funded by some Liberal bureaucratic make work program or rich lefty American or Soros initiative.
It’s lazy Canadian governments asleep at the switch repeating their woeful and totally inadequate reaction to the phony WWF seal hunt propaganda which resulted in turning a bunch of red eurocranks into a multibillion euros in assets pressure group capable of intimidating governments throughout Europe and beyond.

  25. Three and a half words to turn “Save The Planet” into “Drill, Baby, Drill”:
    Mommy, I’m cold.

  26. What a shame for we New Worlders; having to acknowledge that our once cultured, proud and independent mother, Europe, has turned into a raddled old crack whore, who abjures her own children while bestowing her wrinkled, unwashed favours on seventh century savages.

  27. My God, felis, that was spot-on. Europeans are resting on the cultured laurels of the past, smugly lording it over the rest of Western civilisation all the while being completely oblivious to the fact that not only are they as not as smart or cultured as they think they are but the party is over and the “seventh century savages” stepped on the cake.

  28. Can anybody put in context what, “20 more grams of carbon dioxide per megajoule of oil” means?

  29. The Yanks go on and on about lowering the cost of fuel by drilling up their domestic reserves.
Canada is a net exporter of oil, however our fuel pump prices go up with the world price of oil set by the market speculators, just like everywhere else.
The price we pay at the pump is determined by the oil market gamblers, not by where it comes from.

  30. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Alberta- Kitimat pipeline in light of recent events and rising US gas prices. IMHO making the US and China bid against each other could be a good thing…
oh and the Eurotrash can get bent.

  31. ” they say we have 20 more grams of carbon dioxide per megajoule of oil than Libya does.”
It’s probably more like 21, if you factor in the CO2 Europe saved from “offing” an otherwise CO2 emitting Libyan.

  32. Why in the world is anybody concerned with this or even writing about it. With the exception of algore’s mind farts, nobody cares about “carbon footprints” except those who have been suckered into buying offsets and politicians who use this to disenfranchise their oppositions.

  33. Just as a matter of interest:
Sadam fired the oilfields in Kuwait to make smoke. Smoke really screws up laser-guided weapons.
The oil he poured into the Persian Gulf was, as much as possible, thick heavy crude. That tends to stay in place relative to lighter stuff. It’s also perfect for clogging water intakes on landing craft. It was done to foil sea-borne invasion behind his lines.
He had sound military reasons for both actions. Like ’em or not (and I don’t), them’s the facts.

  34. StanQ: Based on some quick-napkin calculations and research, a barrel of oil has about 6000 megajoules of energy, depending on quality, so for what it’s worth, that’s about 20kg of CO2 per bbl, according to them. Not sure if that helps.

  35. OK @ 5:48 pm, I’m spot on with your comment too but would add that I suspect that the smugness of Europeans is due to their being such “bien-pensants” and so devoted to “human rights” and, especially, that they are not the evil Americans.
The laurels they are resting on are the accumulated social and economic capital of their glory years and a half century of the Americans looking after their defense needs. My guess is that, beyond a small elite, the great cultural traditions of Europe are not even a distant memory to the nanny-state-addled masses.
I want to be careful about not being too smug myself, since our trend seems to be pretty much in the same direction
