in tonight’s Tips accompaniment we take a look at what is almost certainly the most famous sound effect in film history: the Wilhelm Scream. Named after a character in the 1953 film “Charge at Feather River” who screams this panic-stricken, almost girly scream after being struck by an arrow, the audio sample was actually first used in the 1951 film “Distant Drums” by a character who is being killed by an alligator. Over the last sixty years, the scream has been reprised literally hundreds of times, in a host of movies and TV shows; according to some in the industry, it’s a kind of an in-joke and a way to say hello to other technical production crews on other shoots. For your amusement, here’s a compilation of movie scenes in which the Wilhelm Scream is used, and, as a special bonus, here’s a handy button that generates the Wilhelm Scream with a simple mouse-click. Just in case you ever need it.

    re. EBD – yeah, Mallick is crazier than a rat in a tin, and like most unbalanced people she’s paranoid.
    While you’re there check out her (by her standards anodyne and non-insane) acticle about the reporter Lara Logan, who was assaulted a few days ago in Egypt. Mallick is obsessed with sicko s*x, so I suppose she couldn’t resist writing about it, and of course it’s very whiny and all-men-are-evil and stuff, but… I dunno, western woman, raped, Egypt… it’s almost like there’s something that dear Heather hasn’t gotten around to thinking about…
    There’s a lot to be said for ignoring her, but then there’s a lot to be said for ignoring horrible traffic accidents, and some people find that hard too.

  5. Do we need frther proof that Teachers Unions are NOT about teaching the children!!
    “Viewing pornography during time that a teacher ought to be instructing his class is wrong and repugnant,” the B.C. College of Teachers said in disciplining James Sutherland for professional misconduct at an unidentified elementary school in late 2007 and early 2008.
    The college does not reveal where disciplined teachers were employed at the time of their misconduct, citing privacy laws.
    The guy doesn’t even get fired!

  6. Probably a few of you have heard of the anti-oil and gas “documentary” Gasland and that it is in the running for an Oscar.
    This letter to the academy tears the films assertions/accusations to shreds. It may come in handy if you encounter someone who thinks that Gasland represents the truth.

    Would have been very embarrassing for O to go against Canada had Harper won a seat on the Security Council-it would have been 13 out of 15. Harper announced that he promised to stand with Israel which is why he was not voted onto the council and why the US voted against him. Looking to me like O saw this coming or worse.

    He may with the folks behind him cheering on. It always takes several generations to really see who the real players where in any era. Obama is just the point on the pencil.
    Most folks we think shaped the World, where obscure in their own times, or just part of the structure.
    Most of the big shots of the day names are forgotten except the facades of power like Obama.

  16. The second most used sound effect has got to be the children in a playground background noise loop. The one where several seconds into the loop you hear a kid yell “whoo hoo!”. Seems to be most commonly used in radio and television public service ads.

  22. Another scream sound effect you hear all the time is the one most associated with “Jaws”. I’m not even sure it’s actually in the feature film Jaws, but it is definitely in the trailer. It’s the scene showing a woman holding a kid in the surging surf as panic unfolds around them. It’s a very distinctive scream and you instantly recognize it when you hear it in other media. Anyone know that one?

    Environmentalists have a very strange relationship with the price of oil. I asked around among friends, students, and (spam blocked word) acquaintances and every one replied without question that high oil prices were a good thing if you care about the environment…but if you look deeper into the economics of oil and gas, it is not so easy to say that you should pray for high oil prices if you care about the environment.
    Supply-side economics in the energy sector are very difficult to wrap your head around. It’s far too simplistic to say that oil or gas is a finite resource (which it is, of course) or that the annual quantity of oil or gas supplied has peaked (which it may have) and so to conclude that increasing oil prices are a one-way street to environmental Utopia.

  44. PM announces The Citizen’s Arrest and Self-Defence Act
    February 17, 2011
    Toronto, Ontario
    Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the introduction of The Citizen’s Arrest and Self-Defence Act. The legislation will expand the circumstances in which citizens’ arrests can be made, and streamline and simplify the self–defence and defence of property provisions in the Criminal Code.
    “Our Government is committed to putting real criminals behind bars. Canadians who have been the victim of a crime should not be re-victimized by the criminal justice system. That’s why we have introduced changes to the Criminal Code so Canadians know they have the law on their side and that our justice system targets criminals and not victims.”
    Currently, the ability to make a citizen’s arrest is very restricted and is only permitted if an individual is caught actively engaged in a criminal offence on or in relation to one’s property.
    The legislation would authorize an owner, a person in lawful possession of property, or a person authorized by them, to arrest a person within a reasonable amount of time after they find that person committing a criminal offence either:
    • on their property (e.g. the offence occurs in their yard); or
    • in relation to their property (e.g. their property is stolen from a public parking lot).
    This citizen’s arrest authority applies when it is not feasible in the circumstances for a peace officer (i.e. a police officer) to make the arrest.
    “Law-abiding Canadians should not be the target of the criminal justice system. This new law provides clear direction on the appropriate use of citizen’s arrest, self-defence and defence of property,” noted Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “Canadians want to know they are able to protect themselves against criminal acts and that the justice system is behind them, not against them.”
    The legislation being introduced in no way compromises the principle that police are the first line of protection against crime. Police officers will continue to have the responsibility to preserve and maintain public peace as Canada’s first and foremost criminal law enforcement body. The legislation simply recognizes that the police cannot be everywhere at once, and that Canadians must be able to protect themselves and their property in urgent situations.
    This bill would also reform self-defence and defence of property provisions in the Criminal Code, which the police, prosecutors and the courts have all acknowledged to be confusing and overly complex. These laws would be clarified so that it will be easier to determine whether the actions of an individual, made in defence of themselves, others or their property are reasonable. A person acting in such cases should, therefore, not be charged or convicted of a criminal offence for those actions.
